I had a 2003 early 04 6.0 at first glance looked like everything was right and it should have started. All my values were right where they should be. Ipr percentage was right and icp showing it was responding correctly. Everything was right except the icp voltage was reading zero. This would have ran with a good pump. But with a bad pump and bad icp signal it was actually a stumper so I thought it would make a good case study video.

03 early 04 are on the top rear like in the video. 04 and up is the three wire sensor on the passenger side valve cover. Using a scan gauge 11 is the easiest and least expensive way to diagnose and monitor stuff on these.

+DieselTechRon I am having a problem starting my 2003 6.0 I hit a Moose but not hard enough to set off the airbags but it smashed everything above the bumper from the grill to the engine fan the Engine coolant resivor and the batteries a lot of damage but I have removed and replaced everything and tried to start is and all that happens is some clicking noise coming from a relay or something in the fuse panel under the steering column I have all the Grounds connected solid all wiring plugged in correctly and the starter is not getting any power to it to engage the fly wheel all dash lights and gauges light up along with a host of warning lights on the gage panel could there be a breaker besides the fuel shutoff breaker that is my problem ?

Ron...trying to help my son in the AirForce fix his 03 6.0 and we had a similar issue but I think HPOP and ICP sensors are ok. Here is history: had been rough starting when cold for a number of months but ran well once started and for rest of day. Put on ScanGauge -- all normal except for 29F diff between coolant and oil temps. While ordering parts, suddenly started blowing white smoke -- also threw ICP code. Took out of service, then changed (using ford parts), ICP sensor, IPR screen (although it was clean), oil cooler, EGR cooler, EGR valve and HPOP screen. MADE MISTAKE OF NOT PRIMING HPOP OR COOLER - OTHER THAN TO ADD OIL TO OIL FILTER HOUSING. Would not start - noticed little oil pressure on dummy gauge (low side). Figured out that stand pipe in oil filter housing had been missing spring since we had truck. Changed standpipe -- confirmed correct housing top and used Motorcraft filter. Tried to start again with jumping vehicle -- now had good low pressure oil but still wouldn't start. ICP at 1600, IPR at 45%, FICM 48V, CAM and CKP sync ok. Really would be very appreciative of your advice. Could we have too many bad glow plugs (remember was very hard starting cold to begin with) or a bad glow plug relay... or do you suspect the HPOP or something else? Again -- you are the best and we could really use some tips. THANKS!!

No priming of the pump. Check for restriction in the fuel system. Possible in the tank ESP if its a 450-550 with a rear tank. Install the blue spring kit. Is the crank even? (Compression) try a know good ficm but injectors are the most common. Any codes?

I just took out the tube/pipe next to the pump, there is an o ring inside and a spring type that is a bit loose in its housing and also its cut, is it normal? also Im trying to figure out if I should replace the pump as I have a no start (just like the one on the video). I can see the ball on the side other than that I don't know what to look for if the pump is bad. Any Ideias? I replaced both ICP and IPR. Thanks

Ron, the last video you uploaded concerning the doorman oil coolers. I did an EGR Delete back in 2011. I had bought the kit from Performance Machine in Lenoir, TN. After about 18 months I had a problem with the truck. Took it to the dealer and they said the oil system was contaminated with gasket materiel. Got truck back home bought OEM parts from Ford and redid all the work I did back in 2011. Sure enough the gasket for the il cooler housing was breaking down clogging up everything. I now only use OEM parts for my F-250.

Ron, my 2003 6.0 runs rough and the acts like it runs out of fuel and shuts off. Ficm voltages are good. Compression good. Icp and ipr show good. Fuel pressure koeo bounces between 35 and 45 psi. I changed the electric pump. Cylinder contribution shows #7 not firing. Self test were all ok. Any ideas? Will a bad injector allow the engine to run out of fuel?

Ron, I have a 03.5 that shuts off while driving. It take about 25 minutes of drive time then shuts off. Give it about a 1/2 hour then it fires back up. I've disconnected the icp sensor and still won't fire up until it wants to. It seems like it has to cool down then its fine. When it's running all the sensors you say need to be right are ok but when it won't start the ipr and icp are not. I'm lost

I replaced the throttle sensor that was broken and cleaned the egr valve and filled coolant. now she will start with a boost and run for a minute while blowing white smoke then shut down any clue? the heads have been planed and studded last year.

Hi Ron, I'm looking for some clarification before I dive into my 6.0. I have an 03 6.0 that is having a no start when hot, and a hard start when it's been sitting for a while. It is acting just like an SCT or dummy plug issue, because it takes a long time to build pressure and it can't build pressure when the oil is thin and hot. But my understanding is it doesn't have SCT fittings or dummy plugs. If the ICP was messed up I wouldn't be able to start it at all, right? Where should I look for a slow leak on an 03 that has the same symptoms as an SCT or a dummy plug? Thank you so much for your help and your comprehensive videos. You have already helped me chase down electrical gremlins on my F250.

Hi Ron and thanks for your awesome advice! I have a March built 03 6.0 and have recently had a problem where the the truck would start ok, but while driving I noticed the the transmission was kind of surging or hunting for the right gear, no matter how much I added throttle. I checked the ICP and there was oil inside the sensor, so I swapped it out with an after marked ICP sensor. After deleting the codes, it fired right up and ran like a dream! Next day I took it for a ride, it was hunting for 2nd or 3rd gear again but after the engine/transmission was warm it ran perfectly! The next day it wouldn't start at all! I noticed a bent pin on the ICP sensor and straightened it our and cleared the codes and again, ran like a dream! Now, I'm having the same symptoms where the tranny doesn't want to shift into 2nd gear when cold and it starts kind of unwillingly but eventually idles fine. Transmission shifts in all gears fine after about 15 minutes of driving! No check engine light or codes either.

Be great if you could show how to pressure test the HPO system on an 03 6.0. I just had a new HPOP put on 7k miles ago and now same symptoms, crank no start. IPR 85%, Ficm sync and power all good, ICP making 5-600 initially, then bounces around to 250-450 psi never getting back to 500. IPR screen good, clean, no trash. Broke two wobbles trying to remove IPR valve. They may not have replaced the tube when they did the HPOP, no way to know. When disconnecting ICP to default, ECU shows 1700 psi IPR 50%, still no start when trying to bypass ICP. They may have even used wrong oring on top of HPOP. There Has to be an oil leak, maybe injector oring, but not sure how to test for one. Hard to believe pump has failed again so soon.

Hi Ron, I was hoping to get your opinion on what was happening as the following scenario played out on my early 03 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L. At first I noticed that each time I would start the truck it was having to crank slightly longer before it would start. After three or four days my wife came home and told me it didn't feel right. I drove it to work that day which is 22 miles. After about 15 miles I noticed a substantial loss of power which quickly got to then point that getting to 55 mph was all I could get as I reached my off ramp. As I took off when the light changed it was almost as if the pedal wasn't connected to anything. Luckily I only had about a mile to go and struggled to get to 35 mph. As I pulled into the parking lot it quit running and I coasted into a parking stall. It would not start back up so I left it until after work at which time it started right up. It still had no power and would only hit 55. I was hoping I could limp it home but when I got to just a very slight uphill grade it got slower and slower until I just pulled over and called AAA. I got a P2290 code and started searching youtube which is how I found your channel. I bought an OBD II dongle and the Torque Pro app for my phone and while setting it up I got the truck to restart but after about 5 minutes it died. I didn't have Torque Pro set up completely at the time but if I recall correctly ICP pressure was at about 450 but would go down as I throttled it and it doesn't bring up the code anymore. I've been watching your videos and they have been very, very helpful especially with the way you not only talk about fixing the problem but take the time to explain the different things that can cause the problem. I've told many others about your channel and they all think it's great. I've learned enough to think that even though the code says, 'Bad ICP sensor' the problem may go deeper than that. I got the ICP out but I don't want to put it back together just to find out I need to take it apart again for something else nor do I have the money to just replace parts that are good. Could you possibly give your educated opinion on what was happening as this failure progressed and your recommendation on how I should proceed from here? I've already removed the FICM and mount, disconnected the three injectors and pulled the ICP sensor. I'm currently looking for an IPR socket and a fitting to do an air leak test.
