In this video, I'll be going step-by-step in the removal and replacement of a generator on a 2014 Ford Edge with the 3.5L engine. Thanks for watching and if you like the video, be sure to subscribe.
I have seen a lot of how repairs. I can honestly tell you that this is by far the best I have seen. Your attention to the detail and the tips that you provided were spot on. It truly reduced the amount of time in getting the job done. Thank you for you excellent video. I look forward to hopefully seeing more of them.
I second that, I was feeling sick, but once I watch your video and all the details I felt up to the job. The dealership wanted $1300 for this job. Thank you again 🙏🏾
Your video was a God send for me! I had no idea how I was going to get that dang alternator and none of the videos were as helpful as yours was. I'm a 38 year old single mom and my teenage sons alternator went out and I had to put a new one in. If not for you, I don't think I'd have gotten it done. It took me 6 hours to do by myself, but I got it done! Thank you so much, I can not thank you enough! God bless you❤
Glad to hear that you got your son's vehicle working and hopefully, he was there to help you. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and much success for the New Year!
More confident now to replace mine tomorrow after watching this video. 1,000 dollar quote from shop😮. Thanks for this. Thanks to wife for videography. 👍
This is by far the best how to I have ever seen. This saved me so much money and taught me a lot. I hope there are more videos like this I can use in the future.
Hi Kevin! Glad to hear that you liked the video! On all of my videos, I try to be detailed as possible to help folks out there like you. Be sure to do a search on my channel and I'm sure you'll fine other videos that can help you. Have a great day!
This was a SUPER helpful video. Thank you so much! One thing that helped me when I was putting in the new alternator was to use a string around the pulley to help pull up that side since there was so little room for my hand. Thanks again! 1:26
Thank you so much for making this video. Your video was very detailed and showed the good and bad. I'm getting ready to tackle my alternator after work.
Your video is the best and most detailed. I wish I had watched your video instead of the others before I did this job. One thing I did differently was that I turned the tensioner with a large wrench from the top on the square lug of the tensioner. I took a 27mm open end and ground it out to 28.5mm
Thank you very much for this video; I just finished the job yesterday, and followed your directions to the "T". Replaced my brake booster AND the alternator in the same week! (I'd do the brake booster over the alternator any day!) Thanks again for making a tough job tolerable!
Thank you for your time and effort on putting this together for us! Following this guide today! It's warm enough to come out of my igloo And get it done
Thank you so much for putting a very informative video together. This is my 2nd time around in 6 mos. due to the refurbished alternator failing. I was a little stuck with the belt tensioner because none of my ratchets were thin enough. The 3/8" square was on the top side of the tensioner (2008 Ford Edge). Fortunately, I was able to get a large adj. wrench to clamp on the top tab and it worked like a charm. Being I was on the top side, I used a long screwdriver to slide the belt off. I made sure to keep my gloves on and survived with only one small cut on my arm. 🙂
Glad to hear Tom that the video helped out! I found out about that 3/8" square notch on the tensioner in the upper position after the job was done. If I had known that beforehand, at least that part of the job would have been a little easier. Glad to hear that you got it done! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Have a great day!
@@yellowsubie28 I got the Carquest remanufactured alternator 150 Amps from Advance Auto. Got it and a new belt for $225. Doable job, just a tight area. The first one did fail, which can happen w/ rebuilt parts, so make sure they put it on a tester. Good luck.
This was very helpful for 2015 ford explorer sport also! Thanks so much! I did learn a lot about the battery monitoring system (BMS) also. It really needs to be reset; otherwise the alternator output will vary from nothing to 15.1volts.
Very focused & consice. Having done a similar repair, I'm very aware of the sharp edge & confining space factor. I feel for you man, your sweat & BLOOD, are testimony to YOUR determination & Work Ethic. Praise all around .. 🤗 Hope your a Good Healer 😉
Just got done doing one of these today and I can vouch for the fact that they are a pain in the butt. If you have two people it helps. But to add to the frustration, we had to change the belt, tensioner and the belt. If you’re going to change the belt tensioner try to find a long maybe 12 inches or so 8 mm or 5/16 ratcheting box wrench with the articulating head. It will make getting those tensioner bolts out then back in SO much easier!
Yes, you can access to the top of the idler bracket for the pulley which is probably a little easier. I didn't find out about this until the job was done. Have a great day!
I’ve been fighting with my wife’s explorer for a week now…couple hours almost every day to get this joke of a placed thing out..doesn’t help that it’s the original with 230, 000 km so all the bolts and electrical connections are near welded in place. You showed me a couple things here that should help. I have two bolts left it looks like so that bracket on the back is a saved migraine…thank you sir!
Glad that you picked up a couple of tips Kevin. I've never changed an alternator on an explorer, but I have seen a couple of videos on it. That job looks more of a PIA that this one. Good luck on your repair.
Terry nowadays they go out of their way to make things difficult. Back in the late sixties the alternator or generator removal and installation was a piece of cake. I’m sure you would agree. Anyway Terry thanks for sharing enjoying your channel Artie 👍
Oh Yes Artie! Cars back then were much easier to work on as there was room even around the engine. I have to admit that this alternator was the hardest to replace. And I perish the thought if I had to replace the alternator on a Ford Escape with the V6 engine. The engineers decided to place that joker behind the engine on the passenger side. To remove it requires removal of the wheel, inner fender liner, brake caliper, caliper bracket, abs sensor removal, bottom bolts removed from strut, stabilizer link, remove half-shaft from tranny and it's still a bear to get to the bolts on the alternator. Yep, the engineers put a lot of thought into getting that alternator in there. Thanks for the comment Artie and have a great day!
@@stuzman52Terry I recently heard that one car manufacturer has the starter installed inside the bell housing. So to change a starter or check the flex plate teeth to check the crankshaft sensor you have to drop the transmission. That’s why I personally maintain my own cars. Thank You again for sharing all of your knowledge 👍
@@arthurfricchione8119 Doesn't surprise me at all Artie. On the Northstar engines of Cadillac, they put the starter underneath the intake manifold. Crazy engineers...I believe they design the body first and then comes the engine. When they don't have the room to hang components on it, that's when they start to earn their money 😊 Since you're studying the automotive electrical systems, is there any particular type of videos you would like to see. Have a great day!
@@stuzman52 my son and I changed one on his Escape. We cut a piece of plastic from an antifreeze jug to put against the firewall and give us a slick surface to slide it out. Very tight. Getting ready to do my Edge now and glad you did this video. Thanks for posting
Your son is a lucky person. I am doing this right now as I watch your video. I have an extra hose going down that is in the way. I cannot remove the stupid cooling fans. I admire your patience. It is the last time I do this crappy job. I like to do my own thing but this is ridiculace.
Hang in there Joe! This job was frustrating for me where I had to take a few breaks from all the swearing. Just be patient and you'll get through it. Have a great evening!
@@stuzman52 Thank you. So it turns out I have an extra cooling hose on the bottom of drivers side fan. 8mm bolt. I think it is because I have to tow package.
can you imagine working on these cars everyday how frustrating it would be. wonder why manufacturers build these cars that are impossible to work on.. with that much labor you can not use cheap parts.. nice job.
Hi Gary! Pulling the stuff out wasn't too bad until I got down to the alternator. Getting that thing out of the bracket was a bear and as I mentioned, there wasn't any room to pry on it. Thanks for dropping in Gary and leaving a comment!
@@stuzman52 great video. Just did my 2008 after watching this. Couple things I would add but you did a great job documenting the procedure and your intro with the description of the symptoms was helpful too. On the splash shield, you only need to take the front half loose and then you can fold it behind the brake rotor. Also to pull out the alternator, i recommend not removing the bottom bolt. It keeps the alternator from getting cockeyed stuck. Just thread it out and pull it back until you see threads. On my 2008, the tensioner has a provision on top that you can put a large wrench on and pull. Maybe that changed across the years. Everything else was spot on and really helpful to know the actual wrench sizes since my eyes are not as good as they used to be. Two thumbs up 👍 👍
@@donaldclinton1975 Yes, I saw from other videos after the job was done that there was a place on top of the tensioner. That would have been helpful to know as it was very tight getting to that square notch on the bottom of the tensioner. Glad to hear that it all worked out Donald! Have a great day!
I do this everyday you got the love board engineers God knows what they were smoking, But you gotta realize that everything was put on the A engine and then engine was put in Vehicle, Easy-peasy job once you get the motor out Of the vehicle haha😢😮
Outstanding job on this repair and this video ! I'd say without question, your kids have a pretty good Dad. My "Check charging system" light just lit up this morning on my Edge. Battery and Fuse tested fine so I am headed down this same alternator repair path. Your video will be a great guide and tool for my replacement. If you said already I apologize for asking again, but how long did this repair take roughly ? I am comfortable doing most of my own repairs, and this looks very do-able but with a substantial PITA factor. Thanks for making this project easier for all of us.
Glad to hear Jeff that the video was helpful. It took probably 1-1/2 hours to remove only where most of this time was used to figure out what should come out and the little extra time figuring out how to remove the alternator. Just do the steps that I mentioned about the bottom bolt and stud and you should be fine. Putting it all back together took a lot less time. Good luck on your repair!
Instant like before I finished the video. You show exactly how to do everything! I didn't see another video where they went through the wheel well, which do you think would be easier?
I followed the service procedure which is removing the passenger wheel. I suppose you could do it all from the top. Would probably be a little easier working with the wheel off especially when rerouting the serpentine belt.
Thanks, Terry. Another great video. I think the Band-Aids tell their own story; that sure was a tight working space. On a separate note, where can I get me one of those clip zip tool things? I've never seen them in our stores in the UK; I'm guessing they're an online purchase? Thanks again for all the great advice. All the best from London.
Hi Labrador and hope you're doing well today! I purchased the clip zip tool from Amazon, but I see that it's no longer available. Here is a link, but not sure how available it's from the UK. At least you see what it looks like and may can find it in your country. Have a great day! www.lockpicks.com/clip-zip-door-panel-tool.html
Attention!!! A couple of things. 1:If you have the tow package you have another 8mm bolt to remove on the bottom driver side cooling fan. 2: The large bolt on the bottom of the altenator should not be completely removed that is why the altenator has an open notch on one of the 2 bottom supports 3: I used a large spud adjustable wrench to pry the tensioner from the top side. When reassembling the altenator make sure the large bottom bolt is inserted but not passed the opening as to be able to install it on the bracket and then screw the bolt in but not tight to be able to swivel it to install the 7mm stud and then tighten both 15mm bolts on top and bottom Hoping this helps anyone else. P.S. Please note that I used a Ford flex altenator as it is stronger 175v vs 150v but you must install the red cable before swinging it into place because the wires and connector are reversed.
I've viewed a few videos for this, and your video is great. My Edge is a 2008, so I almost didn't watch it, but it is in the same spot and configuration. I'll be watching your video again as I approach doing mine here soon. What is your recommendation when it comes to the replacement part? Did you do OEM Motorcraft, or something else? Thanks again.
I have replaced my battery and alternator and brushed the terminals and the battery is still not recieving charge and the light is still on in the dashboard. Any suggestion??? Thanks
Hi Isaac and sorry to hear that you have the same issue after replacing the alternator and battery. I assume that you made the preliminary checks at the alternator of the main battery wire and the sense wire that it had 12VDC. If so, take a look at this video that I did which can help you diagnose the issue. It's located here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KqdEoVGhELk.html Another video which is similar to the one that I posted about diagnostics is located here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J4rYSVd588U.html It's also possible that the alternator could be bad as some people have reported this. In my case, I got the alternator from O'Reillys and it's still working fine several months later. Good luck on your repair and have a great day!
I never removed the wheel or jacked vehicle off the ground.. I took three bolts off engine mount jacked engine up a little,I was then able to remove first the bottom 15m bolt not completely. After that I removed top bolt 🔩 and removed alternator
Remove coolant bottle. I remove stud and nut from top of alternator. But no need to jack vehicle off the ground. Simply remove three bolts off motor mount
A lift makes this job much easier. If you drop the a/c compressor the alternator will drop out of the bottom. Your way is much better if you don't have a lift though.
Gotta love stupid engineers that design for the automotive industry. All Done on purpose so people have to take it to a repair center.😒 anything to suck more money out of consumers . Great video
Gotta hand it to the engineers to come up with places to hang parts around a engine. Yep, probably to discourage folks from changing out parts. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
The tool used to loosen the tensioner was a belt tensioner tool made by gearwrench. There is also another opening on top of the arm for the tensioner. Maybe, this is a little more accessible.
Not sure why it doesn't come out Breon as mine came out. In any event, you should be able to still get the generator out. If I remember correctly from another video, one fella just pulled it back as far as it would go and still got the alternator out. Have a great day!
How many miles on car?Have a 2015 Lincoln mkx that has the 3.7l.Looks like it may be same procedure?Sure mine will go at some point. Its a Ford, they don’t last like the Toyotas and Hondas.
ill be doing this after work today.. Those micro-v's are supposed to be lifetime warranty. not going with a new belt, alternators should never be this hard. why couldnt it have been the water pump to go out :(
Hi Terry. Aren't you glad we were engineers instead of mechanics. Why anybody would want to get into that business today is a complete mystery to me. And hey, where's your M12 impact driver. Ratchets are so "old school." They aren't 7/32 bolts Terry they are 5.5mm which seems to be a weird Ford thing.
Hi Dennis, and yes to not being an auto mechanic. And with cars today, one would need a 2 year degree in electronics to work on such things. And why would you? Since there were few bolts that needed a electric ratchet, I didn't bother. I don't mind old school. And yes, I knew they were 5.5mm heads, but didn't have a socket for them. Thus, a 7/32" socket will fit them. Have a great evening and stay cool!
That was one of the concerns that I had too. I was worried that the replacement generator would be bad since I heard there were so many defective generators out there. Fortunately, it all worked out for me and the generator is still working. Have a great day!
