Titanium from next door as it was sitting for nearly 2 years. He went out in it after getting it rebuilt due to low oil by a garage so called fixed it and it just died. Towed back home and sat there. So I said ill have it for us to play with as my son goes to collage in sept. would be a project for us to tinker with... as you do... :) as im old school with the pinto then later the cosworth engines you are so right about all the bloody wires clips and connectors and stooopid amount of different bolts to do 1 job. We started checking things like fuel pressure oil, spark all was there, the cams were ok the belt was new from before so all looking good. Took thinks off put it back, ODB2 scanners I got 1 software and a hardware one, then mates one from work who had a good one that could not find any fault codes to see why the bloody thing wont start. Then! one day we are out the front ah lets try it one more perhaps needs an engine... it was cranking then all of a sudden it fired... then again like its trying to start.. i`m like ffs its going to start, then battery died!!! as im on shift i had 3 hours before i get back home so whacked the battery on charge.. got home put the battery one, and up after 2 years sitting there not working it came alive.. fk knows what we touched or did id like to know myself. It ran like a bag of bolts and had no throttle like it was in some kind of limp mode. So cleaned all the electrical connectors with de oxit electrical contact cleaner on the throttle pedal and started working :) So then after a few days it started to idle and was running really well so we chucked 3 new plugs and oil, with new filter at it got the good plugs and the 5w 20 Castrol magnetic stuff. Now as it running just see if it drives ok.. then meh! no power. took the pipe off the air inlet side of the turbo and the thing was stuck solid.. oh crap, got a pencil and tried to free it and it worked, the impeller now spins and got better thats when it all went wrong, its now chucking out crap tonne of smoke and burnt through 1 ltr of oil so im just hoping its the turbo seals or something just letting in the oil at turbo somewhere. I was looking at just getting a 2nd hand turbo just so its an easy fix but finding your video of the new part is equal to a 2nd hand one! no brainer. Then as you were saying about a 2nd hand engine you just dont know how long its going to last. After its now running we put the odb2 scanner back on and we now got a code p0016 bank A cam sensor fault, clear it but always comes back, thats new so its trying to at least tell us something now. Thanks for the video`s you made on this engine and for this one about the turbo rebuild part.. Going to try find that so can order one shame you didnt have a link tho :) cheeRS
hey buddy, im having problems with this blasted ecoboom aswell. doing my nut in lol. I wanted to ask, inside the turbo when you took it off, was there any oil leaking inside of it ? or is it supposed to be a closed dry unit where the turbine spins ? getting a mad missfire along with LOADs of smoke. thought it might be the head is cracked but I done a compression test and all seems good on that front! hope you can help fellow DIY'er to another! by the way your video helped me strip it down so cheers!
Sounds like the turbo is shot. It should be dry with a plain bearing oil feed. So that could be the cause of your smoke. I got a rebuilt turbo off ebay. It was a company that only does turbos. I can't remember but I might mention it in the description of the turbo rebuild video. Good luck.
