Another intelligent tip for us driveway mechanics. I've heard engines that sound like this but never put 2 and 2 together. Brian, thanks for all the good info. Yes, I have a 2.0L SPI and they're notorius for dropping valve seats if i start getting mis-fires I have to be careful or it'll destroy the engine.

A tuned up SOHC has more power than the stock 2.0L zetec... and if i go that route i might as well go to the 2.3L mazda engine :)

Lol i'll put 1/4 "rv" cam in it should add the extra throw i need in the cam without losing too much bottom end, would work good with my 4 speed automatic :)

i have been experiencing misfire issues in my 2001 f150 4.6l triton. i found this quick tip very valuable. after watching i immediately went outside and tried it in my pickup. i have a nice even sound when turning over. this helped me eliminate possible issues. now i feel at least a little better about chasing around coilovers.

Trying that tip on my 03 marauder tomorrow. It's rattling and ticking up top on passenger head at idle. Been watching for a few months now and You are the best tech I've seen on RU-vid .I'm a red seal journeyman heavy duty mechanic so know a sharp mech when I see one.

Great video, thank you. I replaced my water pump on my 3.5 ecoboost watching your videos (175k miles). Now have 220k miles but have a compression issue. Plan to pull the heads and send them to the machine shop. Hopefully, that solves the problem.

Awesome video could you please do one on replacing blown head gaskets my vehicles head gasket is blown and it's just been sitting now but I've missed it dearly and just started taking parts off to get to head gasket but still unsure of the whole procedure it's on a 2008 Ford Mustang v6 4.0 SOHC type please and thank you in advance.

Hi Brian, I'm looking for a good scan tool for, 2002 F-350 Super Duty XL, with the 7.3; What would you recommend, for this old engine. Hi! I saw you show results of compression checking via IDS softvare Are you use any special additional tools(VMM???) to check compression(and other parameters) of engine via IDS or it's integrated in software?

Does it mean, that in order to make compression test, I have to connect a tester, than push acceleration and cranck engine? Does this method substitute disconnection of injection relay?

I have a 4.6l in a 2003 town car 62,500 miles. Slight vibration but runs great other wise. Told I have low compression on one side 5,6,7,8. Misfires by the tech but not showing an standard code reader. Was told timing is off on the 2 banks slightly and they feel I have a broken or damaged guide but it has not jumped timing. Want to replace chains, guides and tensioners while in there. I have no sound, no rattle or any kind of noise at all. Good gas mileage, acceleration and runs great otherwise. They think the slightly off timing is causing the low compression and parts replaced above will fix it. Oh, I have also put 5500 miles on the car since I first heard of this. Is this possible? Seems like I would have more then a little rough idle if described timing was off? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

I've heard engines cranks like thought but never put much thought in it. I did some digging on the 5.0 in the F series. Seams there are many complaints on them knocking. Seen much of this?

Very nice! I have an 01 Taurus that has 2 low compression cylinders. It runs pretty well, but occasionally throws misfire codes on those cylinders. I've put over 20k miles on it like this without issue. It does turn over similar to the one in the video.

Great tip Brian! I’m looking for a way to perform a relative compression test on a 5.4 3 valve. (06 Navigator). Were you able to perform that relative compression test simply with the OBD adapter and forscan software? I’m thinking that could help me determin

Until the timing chains fail or a head gasket lets go, and they most certainly will on a 4.0 ford

hey handsome. Have a quick issue. 97 ford re-timed via your video. Took to a shop to be able to reinstall and they are telling me it might have a compression issue without even checking the timing. Help. I have followed all your videos

I have low compression in cylinders 2,3,7,8. I can't see any obvious signs of damage with valve cover removed. Any suggestions? I know the 3 cylinder leaks on the intake side

Just replaced a vacuum pump on a 2017 Ford fusion ran fine until customer claims it died mid drive, car cranks but sounds like no compression any tips?

Thanks. 2009 f350 5.4l I can see vent solenoid control, evap leak test etc. But I can not find Purge solenoid bidirectional control, maybe in use another name for Ford IDS? I am working on p0443.

What is the basic kit needed to do a relative compression test as it sure saves a lot of head scratching. The comparison in the vid was an very informative and does the flooring procedure apply to all cars ?

The clear flood procedure applies to all Fords that have fuel injection yes it is built into the software. Many scan tools have a relative compression tester it is all software based on crankshaft speed.

Relative compression testing can be done with an automotive scope as well as a scantool. A channel called KY Home Garage just did an excellent video on all the possible ways to do the test. Great to watch and learn from.

does this issue (low compression in a cylinder) brings up any codes with a check light engine?

You'd possibly see it as a misfire if anything, but there are lots of possible causes for misfires, so it wouldn't be definitive at all without checking all the potential causes. That uneven cranking noise he's showcasing is a glaring sign of poor compression, but a CEL misfire code isn't.

+olsem101 The ids watches the crankshaft speed when cranking the same way the pcm determines misfires when you are driving.

I have a 2003 marauder, did a compression test at work with the IDS showed 1% low on cylinders 1, 2, and 8. Is that okay? Bars on the computer still showed green. Car has 160,000 miles .

FordTechMakuloco I jave a forx flex EcoBoost that has 180 psi in 5 cylinders and 100p in the other. Can valve carbon cause this issue. How can i tell Do the EcoBoost engine let a little air through the oil filler cap

I guess the next step is to do a leakdown test huh? I was getting around 180 on all cylinders unti i got to the last 1 and i got 150. It did sound like uneven compression. Now im not sure if i should do a timing chain kit install. Its going to be close to 1k just in parts not sure if it's worth it.

Hi FordTechMakuloco, I'm a new subscriber to your channels. May I beg a boone? I'm wondering if you could give me your opinion since I don't know anything about engines. I'm retired. I plan to sell my house, buy a Transit high-top van and travel while I still can. I'm trying to choose the engine. I'm leaning towards the 3.7L Ti-VCT. I've heard stories about problems with the EcoBoost engine fouling the valves, and I'm wondering if the 3.7L Ti-VCT engine has those problems. So if I keep the oil changed as it should be and do all the scheduled maintenance on time, how many miles do you think the 3.7L engine should last without a major failure? Thanks. -- Gest

Dead engine? Or maybe just a bad valve/rocker arm/spring/retainer? my 2006 v6 4.0 just turned off and now runs like complete shit. mechanic heard it turn and could hear the low compression while it is turning. I hope the timing didn't jump. I'm hoping its just a bad component in the head that way i can just take the manifold off and fix it there. If a timing component broke then not worth the time. if the timing jumped would it bend valved? the engine has turned over at least 1000 times from letting it idle a minute to see if it got worse+ cranking it. so if the timing was off would it bend a valve. or maybe the timing Jumped ahead/behind 1 tooth so it doesn't bend a valve but it isn't hitting the compression stroke correctly. The car lost no oil. the coolant is about 1-2 inches lower than the coolant cool line( the engine shut off when it was at operating temperature so the thermostat could have been closed when the car shut off and some of that is in the block. OR SHOULD THE COOLANT FLOW BACK INTO THE RESERVOIR WHEN IT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR A WEEK?(changed Plugs/Wires+Coil Pack) It made the slightest difference in helping it. Couldn't be rings because it doesn't burn oil. And the mechanic agrees that the Compression ring wouldn't go out and the oil ring is fine. The car also has 197,000 miles on it. Doing a compression test this weekend.
