In this tutorial I show you how to remove the rear brake drum from a Fiesta WITHOUT undoing the wheel bearing from it’s shaft. This is actually the way Ford recommend it to be done on a whole host of cars (such as Fiesta, Escort, Puma and more).
For some reason though, aftermarket service manuals instruct to remove the bearing. I’ve even known garages do it by undoing the bearing. Doing it like that risks damaging the bearing. Follow this video and you remove that risk and it’s much easier too.
Here are links to tools and equipment seen in this video or which would be useful to have for this job:
A set of 1/2inch drive wobble extensions from Nielsen:
amzn.to/2LVSxzb
A set of mixed size wobble extensions from Draper Expert
amzn.to/2JciBIR
Draper Expert 50mm ½” wobble as seen in the video
amzn.to/2JcMmFb
You’d like to think brake cleaner is brake cleaner! But this is about the best I’ve used and with an excellent strong jet spray. And great value here if you buy in quantity. Normfest MC-1 brake cleaner
amzn.to/2IVMOM9
The small sized socket and extensions used on the ABS sensor were these from Draper Expert:
amzn.to/2IROJ4i
These chocks are from Sealey. I’ve had mine for years (set of 2)
amzn.to/2JFqN3B
If I were buying now though I’d get this set of 4 with handles:
amzn.to/2sEru3c
The digital caliper you saw is very similar to this one:
amzn.to/2ISPSbR
Making these videos is a “passion” for me. I’m using my 35+ years as an Automotive Engineer and car maintenance DIYer and hope they help people out.
If this video has saved you some time, hassle or money and has been an “enabler” for you and you’d like to show your appreciation by buying me a coffee then follow this link

Nicely explained! I've seen other videos which show the central nut being removed, which disturbs the wheel bearing. Poor advice by them if you are looking only at the brake linings. Advice would be useful on how to back off the adjuster before pulling off the hub, to get past the rusty rim on the inside of the drum.

Hi R, thanks for that. Don't forget to share the good news! Yes, good point about the wear lip. Ours didn't have one and all I was doing was cleaning up the linings and checking handbrake adjustment. I'll look into it and maybe do a supplementary 'short' in the future. 👍👍

This is actually the way the ford repair manual wants you to change the brake shoes,they do not want you to disturb the hubnut and bearing assembly if not neccesary

I very much like the wooden platforms for your axle stands. I had the front of my Citroen Dispatch on axle stands all last summer and, while rotating them coz they were slowly sinking into the street, damaging the tar and getting dangerous, it never crossed my mind to improve them. Cheers. What's worse, come to think of it, I've proudly known for years the pub quiz fact that the Eiffel Tower, thanks to it's massive footprint, exerts less pressure on the ground per squ cm than a human.

Yes, indeed. Now my son can weld I'm going to get some steel feet put on my stands, but when we moved into our new build, scraps of chipboard from the site were easy to come across.

Tres bien, merci.

How's that's easier than remove one big nut on the front? Can be a pig to refit with the 4 rear bolts. Not sure on the newer fiesta's, but my 1994 MK3 fiesta you just have to catch the bearing after removing the nut.

Very informative video! Quick question Have you ever experienced the rear brakes engageing on their own with the handbrake all the way down I drive an '03 TDCi Fiesta and i've noticed my car sort of squat as i let the clutch out as i'm pulling off, and when I'm barely moving the rear brakes zort of squeek and make noises indicating that they're braking I'm planing on taking the drums off when I have the time (which is why I'm watching your vid) but I thought I might as well ask if this is something that happens commonly or that you've come across
@CycloneCyd

Most likely there's a problem with the adjusters, maybe gummed up with shoe dust. Or maybe the whole mechanism is gummed up. Have plenty of brake cleaner to hand. If you're in the UK Screwfix is the best value place to get it from. Do let us know how you get on.

Hey, I have been having problems with my left break drum for years. Changed the shoes, cylinder, some springs, the drum and still I have that terrible sqeeking sound when I brake during my drive... It's so annoying. Could it be that some parts need to be lubed? Maybe the mechanics didn't do that...
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 3 года назад
1st: are you certain it's the rear drums and not the front calipers? 2nd: yes, a tiny tiny smear of Ceratec (amzn.to/3xfWQMv) on all the contact points of the shoes to the drum backplate and yolks. The Fiesta has tiny little teflon pads but yours may have worn through

@@CycloneCyd I am 100% certain it's the rear drum. I stuck my head out the window and listened where the sound is coming from. As soon as I step on the break it squeaks faster when your at high speeds and it slows down the squeeks as the car slows down... Hella annoying and the pedestrians give me the look. It's a shame really. I fixed the car, looking like brand new and every mechanic thinks there is no problem and they don't hear anything 😂 I am not crazy. Usually you can hear the squeeks when the breaks are cold and If you use the handbrake while slowing down it adjusts the brake pads and it doesn't squeek anymore. Sorry for bothering you with silly stuff but I can't sell the car like this.

I tried it this way, and it all came apart from the car, the protective sheet metal, the mechanism, the drum with the pads, all together. What holds for the car, the protective sheet metal, the pads and the brake mechanism, which screws?
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 3 года назад
Sounds like someone has had it apart before and not put it back together properly. If you pause at 2:27 and zoom in you can see the silver head of a M6 flange screw. There is another one above it under the self adjuster that you can't see. These hold the back plate to the swing arm when the hub is off. You can look at this picture, I have pointed at the screws: drive.google.com/file/d/1xwl6B803XYrMeW_GsfLHysHjO_NuoR5P/view?usp=sharing

Why do that, only 1 but holds the drum on, that's a silly way to remove a drum, if those hub bolts are yeild style, your stuffed.
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 5 лет назад
Hi Tony B, because that's the instructions from Ford!! No, they aren't
@thrustvectoring8120
@thrustvectoring8120 2 года назад
Never, ever, ever do that! On old cars the ABS sensor bolt is rusted shut and you'll destroy your hub and possibly ABS sensor. Plus it is impossible to adjust the brake this way.

Totally unnecessary way of inspection of the rear brakes, try that when all the heads of the bolts are rusted. I've worked on these cars for years and have only done that once but each to their own I guess.
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 5 лет назад
Hhhmmm! I'm not sure if you're a troll, just missed the point or thick. I suspect the former since you offer NO actual wisdom of your own, but merely criticise. Anyone can do that.
