Nice to see you here, man :) And I totally agree with works as it should. -Crap- FreeSync = crappy sticker that guaranties exactly nothing. There is no minimum requirement, means even 59-60 range can be labled with CrapSync. The sad part is there are quite a few "narrow" range monitors out there. I am "fortunate" to have one of the more expensive CrapSync monitors with the crap experience - Samsung CF971 (paid ~800 euro for it couple of years ago) and a GTX1070. Guess what - everything works great until I try to enable CrapSync. The issues range from flickering to just a black screen depending on the app/game and the mode (full screen/windowed). The funny thing is that black screen (GPU and monitor cannot connect) occurs even when enabling the adaptivesync. Bottom line, AS A CONSUMER, I'd be willing to pay a a bi more just to have the tech certified to provide desired experience.

In my opinion Tim is wrong calling monitors with narrow adaptive sync fps range as "perfectly ok" (simply it doesn't adhere to G-Sync standards, and those with the sticker do, so you pay premium to have that covered... It's called capitalism), but on the other hand Nvidia's perquisite that the monitor should have adapt-sync enabled by default is the most stupid requirement i have ever heard. But if manufactures simply change that default option in the menu and then pay Nvidia for the sticker, then they will magically become G-Sync compatible. That is total BS indeed.

For those buying a monitor in 2021 and wonder if HDMI is supported by now: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series (Pascal) and higher GPUs supports VESA Adaptive-Sync variable refresh rate over the DisplayPort 1.2a standard. @@neosabre False, the lowest I've seen a G-sync Panel go on it's advertised adaptive refreshrate is 30. @UnderdesertCamelX - Then you didn't do your research or got unlucky, my "old" Freesync display which costs $350 was perfect without any issues what so ever, no flickering or anything. Yes, Freesync (VESA Adaptive Sync) is an open standard. Pretty much any manufacture can implement it royalty free.... this also means there is no control over the product quality put out by manufacturers in their implementation... where as Gsync is a closed propriety format and engineering.... monitor manufactured can only put out products certified by nVidia and those companies need to buy and license from nVidia to implement it. It's not reallt a problem CAUSED by freesync... it's a problem that exists simply because there are no stringent controls over manufactureres. That being said this is a song that has been performed in computing history time and time again. While a closed form of licensed engineering allows for higher quality products.... the excessive cost broght about by licensing and stringent controls when it is forces to compete with an open standard causes the proprietary technology to die... and that is what is happening with Gsync now. The genie was let out of the bottle as soon as a competing open standard cam on the field... and nothing nVidia can do can put the genie back in that bottle. Gsync is effectively dead.

For those wondering, some Acer monitors don't require you to enable FreeSync. It is on by default. For example my Acer ED347CKR has it on by default, the way you know for sure G-SYNC is on is if the Over Drive feature is greyed out. I believe you also need to enable DDC/CI (enabled by default), if you've manually turned this off, please make sure it is on. DDC/CI is a display feature that allows the GPU to control the monitors refresh rate (not just adaptive sync, but the ability to switch say from 60hz to 100hz) and also adjust other parameters like color gamut and brightness if you are using a program that does this thru your GPU.

Tim, did you consider that FreeSync monitors could get more expensive because Nvidia might charge a license fee for each sold FreeSync monitor which Nvidia approves? It wouldn't be the first time that Nvidia does a scam like this, they did so for SLI, they made every motherboard-company (ASUS, MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte, EVGA) pay a license fee for SLI per sold motherboard which the customer who bought the motherboard had to pay. So it might be bad for AMD-customers that Nvidia now allows FreeSync to be used, depending on whether or not Nvidia charges for a license again. We should also consider this: it might increase the marketschare for Nvidia even more and decrease the market share for AMD even more. This is problematic if we end up with only one company left which makes GPU's. We already pay the price for AMD not having the finances to compete, that is why Nvidia has a monopoly on the high end and that is why Nvidia charges so much for mid-tier cards like the RX 2060 - RX 2080. In short, just calling it a win for gamers seems premature to me. Time will tell.

Short Answer: Yes, as long as it's a Pascal based GPU and your FreeSync monitor/UHDTV isn't a cheap Chinese knock off. Edit: G-Sync has been a Marketing scam ever since they released it. Just about everyone saw right through it from the very beginning. That being said nVidia GPU's are the only GPU's I have ever owned. I don't own a G-Sync monitor but my new FreeSync Asus ROG Strix XG438Q(43" 120Hz) for $1000 works just fine with my ASUS RTX 2070 Super in A-Sync mode. Keep in mind that 43" cost $200 LESS than a G-Sync Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ(27"-144Hz) panel. what also has to be considered, is that there are Methods to up the qualitiy on freesync and thus the new G sync experience. The first is CRU, which allows you to Change the freesync operateing range. There are a few Monitors that somehow Show defects with the new Gsync but work better with a modified Range. F.e. the first AUO Panels with 1440p 144Hz IPS like the Asus PG 279Q. On factory Settings ist 35 - 90Hz and has various defects on the new G sync like flickering. But if you upp the range to 60 to 144 it works just fine. The 2. Option is even better, but you have to be lucky to find Drivers for it. There are custom Drivers out there, that Change your freesync range. Basicly does the same as CRU but is a bit les fiddly after you set it up. Just Google if there are custom Drivers for your monitor. Might work wonders

Tested LG 38UC99 with 2080 Ti. It works very well if paired with V-sync On and 60 FPS lock, the difference in smoothness when framerate drops below 60 is staggering compared to just regular V-sync, whole completely different world. This is what I want VRR for, protecting against negative effects of dipping into 50s and giving me more flexibility. Also I have edited the VRR range heavily from default 52-75 to 35-60, so some flickering during loading screens is possible, also if massive frametime spike happens there can be a flicker too due to going outside of VRR range, but I prefer having wider range for games that are really dipping low regardless of hardware used (any singlethreaded game really, Grim Dawn for example, or all MMOs) and maintaining consistent frame displaying even with slight flicker rather than having all of this V-sync mess. These are extreme situations anyway, regular 50-60 use works as intended. I never really bought this display with VRR in mind in the first place, so it is all just an extra, a great extra and a game changer to a degree. Especially that I've tested the best G-sync ultrawides on the market and they were all 3rd grade gamery garbage panels with tons of bleed/glow and other panel quality issues, so in my case there is no way to get good picture quality + G-sync, and now I kind of have both in one, partially because VRR on this display is not like great, but good enough. I can peacefully wait for OLED/MicroLED desktop displays now.

Hope it's useful for someone :) Edit: For those who may be curious, testing was done on a gtx 1050ti

EVGA 1070 with Viewsonic XG2401 working perfect. Cranked DSR to 4x and SMAA ingame. Ran rise of the tomb raider benchmark with highest settings to be quick and dirty about it. Even when I dipped down into the mid 30fps everything was smooth. Seems LFC is also working with this combo.

Thanks for this in-depth review. I've been on AMD GPUs since 2003. And now I switched to RTX 4090, and I have a lot of headaches making it friendly to ASUS ProArt PA32UCX-K. I never expected to have more compatibility issues with a pro-grade monitor on an NVidia GPU than on AMD (which were working almost flawlessly with all of my monitors). And regarding the FreeSync - I have a screen-tearing issue with RTX 4090+PA32UCX bond. Howewer the NVidia Pendulum demo and AMD FreeSync test show that the frame rates above 40 FPS work more or less OK.

Thanks for the help. I had to dig into the menu on my monitor to toggle over to freesync mode. Have had my monitor for about a year and never noticed that menu. Didn't matter much until now I suppose since I couldn't use the freesync until now with my 1080. After doing that the setup g-sync tab appeared. Played 20 minutes or so of Dark Souls III and didn't notice any issues or the occasional stutter I usually get once and a while. Will need to play longer to test it more, but if it fixes that issue that would be really awesome.

Well this is great! I was thinking about upgrading from an AMD GPU to the RTX 3070 but was disappointed that I would lose freesync. Apparently not!

how did it go? is the 3070 working properly with your freesync monitor?

I tested my LG 27GK750F (27 inch, 1080p) freesync monitor and it seemed to work fine. I only tested it for about 10 minutes on Gears of War 4, but no blanking, flickering, etc. It's definitely not a cheap monitor, though

My Asus MG279Q works perfectly. The Standard 35-90Hz Range is flawless. I even get it to work with an extendend Range of 50-144Hz done with CRU. Its really amazing. This is even lower than some people get it to work on AMD Cards

CRU literally fixes most of these issues, especially blanking. I lowered the freesync range by 1hz on my unit and now everything is working perfectly.

After purchasing a "g-sync compatible" monitor, i think i might return it and go for a proper g-sync monitor instead. The lack of variable overdrive is a pretty severe downside to me considering it's a 240Hz display and the static overdrive while adaptive sync is enabled is obviously tuned for 240Hz which results in horrible overshoot at framerates much lower than that. Coming from a proper g-sync monitor, going for the bootleg "compatible" one only made me appreciate g-sync more.

I have the AOC Q3279WFD8 (1440p, 75hz, freesync), and the gsync thing works great with dx11 and dx12 games like Destiny 2 and Forza Horizon 4, but the moment it hits dx9/10 games, like unreal 3 powered mmo’s, it does the crazy stutter thing. I suspect that netcode update rates and ping may also contribute to the stutter problem, but I’m still reaching into the depths of my game graveyard to test my hypothesis. Update: It’s so inconsistent I would classify this monitor as “Don’t touch it with a 10 foot g-sync pole”. There was one day where everything ran smoothly, and other days where every game experienced stutter. In one instance, the stutter randomly reoccuring murdered the sound for the audio over displayport (sounded like some bitcrushing). The times it doesn’t work can sometimes be solved by rebooting the monitor, other times it persists even when gsync is disabled with the NCP. I still think there is something about DX9/10 that makes this implementation of gsync a flaming hot mess, since it’s a lot worse of a stutter and occurs much more frequently than DX11 or 12 games. Or benchmarks. Unigine heaven absolutely hates gsync in dx9 mode.

I tried following this. I tried a freesync moniter and one of the 12 moniters. An Asus with gsync compatibility and it worked but wasn't nearly as good as gsync and it also seemed to raise the heat output causing throttling and framedrops. As soon as I switched to a Dell gsync moniter I was amazed by the difference. Now I'm not saying the Asus didnt work it just wasn't nearly as good if you want the smoothest experience. If you have a desktop with good cooling you may have a better experience though I'd still stick with a legit gsync moniter unless you don't mind seeing the occasional frame tears or some studders. Though still a relatively smooth experience. Some games are also more than others. It's up to you but I at least reccomended testing a gsync compatible and true gsync with the built in chip to see if your okay with a likely lower end experience. This guy's review is a bit misleading. Maybe I haven't tested enough moniters. But considering I tested one off the list of 12 perfectly compatible displays and it was no where near as smooth and clean as the full gsync... personally I'm gonna follow what I've learned and stick with nvidia gsync moniters for my pc gaming setup. I may hold onto my gsync compatible Asus VG278QR just because it has some great features and works well on some games and could be useful if I ever get an AMD card but I couldn't use it for anything competitive and somehow despite being 1080p. My 1440p gsync dell somehow was able to run the same game at the same framerates at double the resolution so that was fucking weird but means I need to do more testing. And next to the Asus VG278QR it wouldn't stutter at higher temps even at double the res. The temp and fps where the same. I'll comment with further results if I figure out what exactly is going on. It almost seems like the gsync chip is doing more of the work while these gsync compatible models off set the proccessing to the cpu or gpu raising the heat. That's just a guess I'll have to do more comparisons but as of now gsync does seem to be more steady and promising for reliable steady framerates. Ie. I might use it occasionally but I wouldn't use my Asus VG278QR competitively to try to put it simply

Took a look at my monitors and it turned out that both of mine had freesync that I had totally forgotten about! Nice to have both of them up and running with G Sync :D
