This is amazing, seeing people who have no idea what Umineko is about or who the characters are play a highly-divergent spinoff of the main series. It's a series that only barely makes sense if you know the entire story, inferring it from details in a fighting game leads the Best Friends to some delightfully strange places.
Umineko: The game where whether you can argue the butler did it in the kitchen with the candlestick is more important than how many universes the enemy loli can blow up.
i read that faq that dude made for woolie. it gave specific tips for making it video-friendly, character descriptions, background on the vn and trivia. lots of good shit. i feel bad for the dude now...
On one hand, poor dude wasted some good effort, he didn't deserve that. On the other hand, the Best Friends are at their finest when bumbling around and we got Pat's bitching Bernrosa theory out of this.
Tee hee. docs.google.com/document/d/1mQdZSwRFEUcJp1NEfDj9B0szxSOLs4eQN5qWBjvbXW8/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=105284496625740656285 Oh well, they plugged my ultimax shit way back.
Is there a rabbit hole? I watched the whole first anime and thought it was alright, but the sequel series is so dumb I can't get into it. Are the VNs better?
The Umineko anime has been rejected by it's fanbase, so that should tell you something. It also didn't get a second season for good reasons. It's a top-tier VN though.
I like how they progressively get more and more quiet as they get more into the game and discover it's systems and realize it's not just A N I M E T R A S H
They are in deep Weeb waters now. This goes beyond the calm waters where the inexperienced pass around fan sub bootlegged Naruto DVDs. This is straight up cult classic fan-translated VN game spin-off territory. I fear they may never make it back without a Liam for a guide.
So Umineko, the murder mystery visual novel...has a fighting game. Yeah, so when's my Zero Escape fighting game? When's my Higurashi fighting game? WHERE IS MY EUPHORIA FIGHTING GAME?
I was gonna make a joke about a Phoenix Wright fighting game but... ya know... Mahvel... Nobody applies corner pressure like Godot. His Coffe corner traps are amazing!
Whoever made this game seems to have been thinking that the best way to convey that the source material of a fighting game is complex (umineko is a nifty anime magical murder mystery-ish thing) is to make the fighting game have an incomprehensible amount of meters.
I was just using anime as a shorthand, the Best Friends fanbase might be pretty weeby overall, but more people are likely to get what I mean if I say anime than if I say visual novel, let alone _kinetic_ _sound_ _novel._
When you think it's just a "small girl fanservice" fighter but it's actually a "Murder Mystery Chess Match within a Chess Match that spans time and space" fighter. Also Battler gonna make some hamburger meat.
William Gregor No, this is still "small girl fanservice". It just tries to lie with a murder mystery. Like Touhou lies at being bullethell. No amount of lying with style or flare or substance will make the girls look any closer to 18.
Charredasperity Just when you reach the depts of cheap knockoffs and anime trashfires...a barrel with substance appears to mislead you into going deeper. The barrel is located in Woolie's house, no surprise it would also be skilled at lying.
Knowing and loving Umineko, and getting all the little references, I realized I've been watching this for over a half hour with a huge dumb grin on my face.
This game is actually based on the sequel to a visual novel titled 'When They Cry'. Actually Umineko's full title translates to 'When the Sea Gulls Cry'. You can see a returning character from the first VN, Bernkastel, who is also a witch. Liam would have told you all this. I miss Liam.
I love Higurashi (tho I never finished it), I need to get into Umineko tho. I love witches and murder mysteries, but Umineko also apparently has some incest, which grosses me out, but I'm gonna have to stomach it to get to the stuff I do like.
For those of you who have never heard of Uminkeo before, I would highly recommend playing it. It's one of the best visual novels I've ever played. There's too much to say about it for one youtube comment, but it's an average man with reason VS. a witch with magic kind of story. It does an absolutely amazing job of setting up the main character in a desperate situation that seems hopeless. So when he finally manages to turn things around and that awesome "Dread of the Grave" comeback music kicks in, it will 100% guaranteed give you goosebumps.
There's also an anime of the first half of it. It's a lot more summarized, but it looks nice, especially compared to the original VN's art...though if that bothers you, there's also a patch you can get that uses the PSP remake's art. Which I need to find again, because I had this on my old computer and never finished it.
oh man, if I was a fan of this series I'm sure I'd be foaming at the mouth over all of these references. ... I might actually look this up in the future.
Make sure you set it to the original art though. Don't you dare play it with those bland, generic-ass anime portraits and miss out on the goofiness that is Ryukishi07's art.
Or do play it on generic anime art, cause you shouldn’t force yourself to deal with shitty art and risk not continuing a great story with amazing voice acting
I have no idea the reasoning, but she idol beam seems to be a reference to Touhou's Marisa, and her Master Spark Laser. But yeah. Unexpectedly cool character!
How did I not know about this? This is hilarious. I love Umineko, it's so fun seeing them reacting to everything despite knowing nothing about the original umineko
Originally released as "Ougon Musou Kyoku" years ago, and got a console release with some extra features, but never saw an English release or translation. (It's engine was far too different for Witch Hunt to be able to fan-translate it like the normal series.) Just recently given an English release on Steam, published by MangaGamer(like the rest of the When They Cry series)
Anyone who has never heard of Umineko, go listen to some of the visual novel ost. Then when you're hooked, read the VNs, they're on RU-vid, you can even find the updated versions with voice actors and better graphics. They're absolutely worth your time. It's basically a traditional murder mystery, that is made to look like a fantasy magic story with witches and lolis to distract and fool you, and your and our protagonist's job is to see through all the bullshit and explain how the murders were committed if no bullshit lolis exist to commit the murders. If you can't, you lose, and you have to admit bullshit lolis exist and they'll devour your soul. If you're only semi interested, at least check the Logic Error scene. It's one of the best in the series. Also it's extremely graphic and violent without being that. It's amazing.
It's based on a mystery visual novel where the MC is trying to figure out a closed door murder mystery without the use of supernatural explanations. Is actually quite good, never thought they'd make a fighting game out of it.
Yeah fam, in the tournament of power Beatrice goes Endless Witch Super Endless and even in spite of being from the previous series, Rena gets like three eliminations with her cunning.
Why does everybody think, "thing I don't understand must be garbage" when anime fightgames are happening? I genuinely do not understand the mentality at play here.
So what you're telling me, Mr.Quicknames or whatever your name is, you're telling me you'd rather have nothing, than something that is both different than what you are expecting AND well done. Is that a fair understanding of your position?
One year and a readthrough of Umineko later, I return to this episode to realize how fuckin' great it is watching people who know nothing about Umineko try to understand Umineko.
What's hilarious about playing this without Umineko is that none of the character's passives are going to make any sense. George gets buffs when enemy attacks graze him - fuck you, play _Episode 4 - Alliance of the Golden Witch_ for the context. Anyway, now I'm trying to think of what the most obscure Super in this game is. Probably one of the late-game character's Metaworld Supers.
From the moment the best friends started friday night fisticuffs, i knew it was inevitable, the one day they would finally play this game. And now that that the videos here it only makes me all the sadder that liam senpai wassnt here to play it. He could have been the only one who knew what umineko was.
If only they knew how cool Battler actually is. Feels bad when no one knows about my anime trash (that is actually not trash) that would take too long to explain.
