Hi Norman, as with all Tech improvements are made! Interesting about the battery backup, the installer said when all phone lines move over to fiber then it needs powers to work, so if there is blackout then the unit still needs to work so you can make a phone call! Unlike phone lines there is no live power to power the unit over the fiber like regular copper to the house, so wonder how BT will get around this?

@@joewoodford9428 Hi yeah they still not got around this problem but they say before install this is the risk and ask if you have alternative ways to contact emergency services for me I use mobiles anyway so no problem there

@Lee once the FTTP settles down ( about 7 days according to BT engineer) you should see fairly constant speeds. So far we have had no issues.

Hi CL7, not sure. They probably had to run a fiber from the main BT Maintenance unit in the flat complex (I'm assuming its a new build) to your apartment. Speak with BT and they will be able to tell you more.

Hi Aik, unfortunately due to the location of the modem I can not see the under side of it now. it's behind my desk. There appears to be only 1 LED which say Port1 on it. As the kit was supplied by BT i guess they are best placed to tell you what you need for an alternative ISP

It is correct you don't need a landline, though many say it is wise to have a landline phone in-case the mobile service going off-line or you need to call the emergency service. As the Master socket is the property of BT you are not allowed to touch this or cut the wires.

Hi Philip, as the Router is connected to the Openreach modem via an Ethernet cable it is possible you could run a long cable from your box to a suitable location in your house. Otherwise you are correct that the Router will be main gateway for all your connected devices from your cupboard box. Is there is a free power socket in the cabinet as you could look at a TP-Link Ethernet over Power line extender solution such as a TL-WPA8630P. It is something I use in our house to extend both WiFi and Ethernet ports over the domestic power socket circuits. I also have a vlog about this and setting up !!! Does that help?

@Peter Vince, Not over fiber, the phone line is still over copper for now. The equipment supplied by BT would permit this but is not part of their service yet.

It depends. I’m in a new build house and the phone signal is delivered over fibre. The box BT fit has a Ethernet cable out which plugs into your Wi-Fi router and also a telephone cable out which connects to a master phone socket to make all the house phone sockets live. I think existing houses with a copper line keep that, but new builds have everything run over the one fibre.

@NIco Vizualz, The PON and Charge lights are solid Port 1 is flashing, this one shows there is internet traffic. If you unplug the Router side of the cable from the BT fiber unit the light will stop flashing as no traffic is being driven by your Router.

Hi Jamie, simple answer is, yes. They pull the fiber from you house to the CBT or fiber connection unit, this leaves a very long length of fiber cable on the outside of your house where your standard phone line pops up from underground or over head before it enters your house. You can then ask the engineer to run the cable around the house to the location you want them to install the large cabinet containing the modem and UPS near a wall socket. I think it took about 1 month for BT to recongise that FTTP was available to are. Look up Openreach's fibre checker www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband, that will give you an idea if FTTP is available yet for you. From there it then took a further month to book the engineer to come out.

@ Peter Vince, glad to hear you are up and running. Interesting they have updated their Fiber Modem solution, though the size you have suggested seems rather small. A lot of the space they need is to coil up the fiber line and to support the UPS as eventually the phone line will come off the box. What sort of connections does it have? Do they still ship a UPS?

Not sure Openreach would as they only build out the infrastructure are not consumer focused. As the tech moves so fast even BT stuff they show on their site is out of date quickly !

Yt Olxd , could be a couple of months to over 1year. Covid-19 has slowed these kinds of projects down. The area in the village which had the same statement as yours at the time of recording has only just received their FTTP service.

@@paulvalente4140 RU sure they are offer FTTP and not FTTC. BT often talks about Fiber on their adverts, this is usually NOT FTTP. FTTP is only a fairly recent upgrade by BT and will take them years to roll out across the UK. They appear to be targeting areas where their is either no FTTC or very poor BB and large new housing developments (+50 house). If you are on an FTTC service and getting >10Mbps BT considers you to be part of the supper fast roll outs since 2010 and not the Ultra fast as that of FTTP.

@Don Lewis, no the master socket is no longer the route into your house for Broadband. They will bring in a new fiber line in, to just about anywhere in the house you need it. You do need a power socket close to the new fiber modem to power the modem and charge their internal UPS. The Master Socket will only be for your copper telephone line if you still have one in your house. Please think to Like and Sub if this was helpful... Cheers Joe

@@DionLewiis I spent years trying to get FTTP into our village and have spoken to many Outreach engineers over the past 10 years on the subject, plus lots of reading up on the subject.

@ Gary Bendle, The box on the wall from BT is the Fiber modem, this converts it from a fiber signal to an Ethernet based signal. You still need a router but one that can accept an Ethernet feed, the TP-Link Archer I reviewed in an early vid works well, you switch out of ADSL mode to LAN mode. I do not believe you can just plug the wall feed into a Ethernet switch and as you will need to log onto the ISP supplying your BB as well the need to set-up your own home network. No installation costs - had to purchase their new HomeHub at £9. I would check with BT as they are always changing their packages. Our contracted service is 180Mbps down and 30Mbps up. Others packages may vary depending on what you are looking to get.

@tha likely lad, if you are in a private house the box can be located anywhere there is an outside wall and power socket, and a fiber line cable can be run to. There is max cable length from your fiber node connection (CBT) to your house (not sure what this might be but it will 10's meters if not +100m). You will need two mains power sockets, one for PON unit and the other for your Router. Best to discuss location with your installer on the day your location they are very flexible within reason and fiber length.

Up to the supplier, not if BT offers a BB only package. In the future fibers will be your phone line as well. BT have not enabled this yet on my kit.

@Carlos, no we did not pay, this was part of an upgrade scheme run by Hampshire County Council to bring BB to rural locations not supported by BT's mainstream upgrade plans. Prior to this parts of the village only achieved 0.5Mbps downloads this was considered unacceptable by residents who campaigned for years to HCC to support this upgrade. Parts of the village are still not covered and we are waiting on Phase 2 to support these locations. BT and Openreach seem very disconnected when you speak to them as BT is really the "sales front" with limited knowledge of network expansion plans.

Ultra Fast currently (as of 03/10/18) from BT is 330 down and 50up. Yes you can use your own router if it supports LAN based internet access on FTTP. I'm using an Archer VR2800 from tp-link, the router needs to authentic with BT as well.

Carti yes and hyperoptic also provide lower fttp speeds for those that cannot afford 1gb up and down, since BT runs the UK as soon as they provide gigabit internet, every other mainstream company will join the band wagon

@JuiceBanger1 you will need an RJ45 Ethernet cable from the FTTP modem to your Router, BT should supply you with a BTHomeHub which will connect to the FTTP modem via the RJ45 cable. The BTHomeHub will offer you WiFi and 4 other Ethernet ports. If your PC has no WiFi recommend buying a WiFi dongle, they are cheap and much easier than running long Ethernet cables around the house. If that does not sound good then look at Ethernet over PowerLine solutions. I have a vid on that as well.

@@joewoodford9428 I am sorted, used ethernet cable from my mesh disc to the pc. I had misread online thinking I needed optical cable which I didnt have. Thanks for the response.

@Neil David , Pretty much, though it depends on the length of the run from the CBT to your house. Speak to the pre-installer and they will tell you where and how far they can run the fiber link. But you can run it around the outside of the house to get to a back study/bedroom or other location.

BT does have plans to roll out FTTP to all over the next 10yrs (or so they say). If its a developed area the there is a good chance you are already on FTTC. If your BB is around 30Mbtps then BT considers you already on Superfast BB. If below 10 Mbps then your might be in luck with FTTP as they focus on upgrading their network at the lower end first. Unfortunately its a waiting game, we moved from 3 Mbps to 150 Mbps on FTTP, now up to 300 Mbps !!

@isyt, the box on the wall you see at about 3mins does need to be connected a wireless router, either your BTHomeHub or third party router. In our case it is the TP-Link shown in an earlier video. Without a router there is no back end connection to BT systems and there is no way to broadcast the internet connection around the house (to my knowledge, but I will stand corrected if there is). Joe Woodford - Sure, I was questioning the “wireless” word though. The router doesn’t need to have WiFi capabilities. All your devices could be connected via Ethernet ports on your router. Also, you’d be connecting the box to the router via cable.

@isyt, as this a BT solution, the householder will receive a BTHomeHub unit, which is a Router, Ethernet Switch and Wifi hot spot. The connection between the FTTP modem on the wall and the router is an Ethernet Cable (it has the yellow connector on it). I'm not sure if you plug in a basic Ethernet switch into the FTTP modem unit direct that you will be allocated any IP addresses for devices, so the use of router is required for that and to take full advantage of FTTP service from BT will include WiFi for wireless connections. The BTHomeHub has a couple of Ethernet ports at the back but I assumed most users are connecting the majority of their devices over wireless connections. Hence my comment about a wireless router to get your BB connection on a device, such as a tablet, laptop or other mobile devices looking to connect direct to the internet. But I do appreciate your comments and seeking clarity on what was said as I'm sure it will help other :)

Joe Woodford - Fair enough. I’m getting FTTP 900mb from BT in a couple of weeks. Coming from 3mb copper this will be quite a jump! Anyway it’s due to come with BT SmartHub 2 and as far as I can tell it doesn’t have the ability to run its’ own VPN so was just investigating other solutions.

Dean Walker, most quote "super fast" broadband over fiber but these are Fiber To The Cabinet (FTTC) solutions. Max speeds are 80Mbps if you are only meters away from the cabinet (the green box by the road). If you are getting 70Mbps you are not too far from the box (under 1/2 mile) and getting a pretty good service. This will be via an ADSL modem. What I'm showing here is FTTP which is Fiber To The Property (or premises?). This is a dedicated Fiber line to the house. If you don't have the white wall box shown on the vlog and Fiber line, you get your BB via the phone line as well as needing to use ADSL filters on phone sockets with a ADSL modem, you are getting the best speed possible on your FTTC service. Sorry to disappoint you, but 70Mbps is really very good on FTTC. We lived off just 3.5Mpbs for +15 years until they installed FTTP in our area.

@@joewoodford9428 Thanks for the quick reply. I actually get around 76mb, so I guess I am really lucky, the box is litteraly at the end of the street around 5o yards maybes. I am actually having a new line installed on the 24th which will allow the speed up to 150mb. This is what I meant when I asked although I explained it really badly lol. SO once Sky/Bt put me this new line in on the 24th. I will then be restricted to 150mb (I understand that is best case senario) or will new options then become available because of the new line. Or is it 150mb limit. full stop. cheers and hope that made sense

@dean walker, if they are fitting a Fiber libe to your house then you should get that speed or more if you by a plan with greater download. FTTP will still fluctuate as it is still a shared "pipe" the more using FTTP the greater the range. But most guarantee >100Mbps

@Nico Vizualz, Leave the FTTP modem power on as this BT's equipment to your house. Turn off your BT Router - HomeHub(5) or better. Leave it for a few minutes and then restart, allow the router to establish a link and settle down. Then carry out a test using BT's own BB tester, speedtest.btwholesale.com/ If you are still seeing problems contact BT and register a fault. There might be an issue at the exchange or in their fiber infrastructure to your house. They will need to carry out a fiber line test at your fiber connection node (CBT) to the exchange then from your house. From memory the green LED should be solid, we don't use ours, in favour of a TP-Link router.

@@joewoodford9428 Done that, i am now getting 38mbps download and a 20 mbps upload and 20 ping but I'm still experiencing some ping spikes, >150, and packet loss despite the decent speeds. Any more suggestions? as the other day, I called up BT and all they did was refreshed the wifi and tell us to turn of any devices when not in use, which wasn't much help :///

Ken I know how it feels ! I ordered mine on the 4th November, was giving 14th November for install, then the 23rd December and the last one was 27th February... my new date is now showing 16 April !

@Saqib, the ISP can offer 1Gbps, I only paid for up to 140 Mbps. Depends on the local load as Fibers are still shared signal paths from the exchange and yes I'm getting around 137 Mbps thanks for asking :)

@@joewoodford9428 that's great to hear, can you give me a rough ides of cost between the speeds? I'm in the very fortunate position of living in a newly built apartment block in London, which has both BT Openreach FTTP provision and HyperOptic.

know the feeling for past 15 yrs we have been getting any from 500Kbps to 3.5Mbps. Ultrafast is a game changer when you have a house full all watching RU-vid !

Hi, there are several bits of kit shown @40s on the pole. The large box in the middle of the screen with the external 12 Fiber port covers is the CBT, the bottom left is a 4 port Fiber unit and the square box (with the plain cover) I guess if the older copper telephone kit as this was on the pole before the guys installed the two other Fiber units

Its still over the old copper wire line (aka master socket), BT have yet to move to using everything over Fiber. This will happen at some future time though I have not heard when.

@Liam Darling, hi, not sure what you mean? The Fiber Optic line from BT needs to connect to a modem to convert it back into a signal that the router can read, in this case Ethernet traffic. Your Router then is your household hub for WifI and LAN connections.

I guess that Virgin must put power down their lines to drive the router. The BT system is Fibre to the house and then they convert to an Ethernet sign with their Fibre internal modem which is then used by the BTHub or third party router. These devices need wall power unfortunately to drive them, usually only 12V. Hope this helps? If so please think to Like and Sub.. Cheers !!

Hi John, very sorry to hear that. As I mentioned on the video prior to the fiber install our BB was at best 3Mbps down and just 700K up!
