Prep, prep, prep ! I spent 3 days prepping our floor and after 9 years, it still looks great. No scratches, chips, or fading. My neighbor spent almost $4K having his done professionally and ours has lasted better than theirs !

Did you etch or did you use a diamond cutter to clean up the concrete? Seems like everybody loves one and hates the other.
@Gildedroute
@Gildedroute 3 года назад
I would strongly suggest renting a diamond grinder to properly prep the floor. Profiling the concrete properly is the only way to guarantee a mechanical bond. Also using a primer or high quality epoxy or polyaspartic would create a floor to last for ages. Not bad for a DIY! 👍🏽

My epoxy floor is 20 years old. The pro who installed it for me spent 1/2 day torching the floor to drive out any moisture. I thought it was overkill, but with 20 years use, these is no separation from floor. I would strongly recommend this step. Also, I would recommend 2 coats of clear. Great job thought!

Nice job, but a couple of areas to improve the end result in case you do another, or others watching this read these comments: 1) The flakes can be spread much more evenly using a "shaker" (drill a few holes in a plastic container) as you can see (eg @9:28) the way you've thrown the handfuls of flakes around and how they concentrate and disperse in a fan shape in many areas, instead of being really uniform and consistent. 2) When painting or rolling a coating like this always finish with a finish roll (roll in one direction eg back towards the garage door and lift off lightly, move the roller to the next part and repeat) because if you go back and forth and lift off randomly you'll get the non-uniform finish (gloss vs satin almost) eg @13:55 pan. 3) A lot of people don't use the professional version which could explain the variation in quantities they used vs what you found worked for you. 4) Although your floor section technique avoided the need, spike boots (

I used the light gray version 7 years ago in my garage. If you prep it definitely holds up well, just a few missing chips mostly from floor jacks and lifting weights. I do not recommend the clear if you live in a sunny 🌞 state. My turned yellow after a year, I know it’s the clear because we’re I missed to cover with the clear those spots look brand new.

Great video! An important tip to add in the prep process that is commonly overlooked is if a finish seal coating was applied to the concrete floor you have to use a concrete floor grinder to remove the sealant for the epoxy to bond to the floor. Pressure washing/acid washing/and concrete etching will not remove concrete sealants and the epoxy will delaminate and peel from the floor.
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
Correct, if the concrete is sealed you’ll have some extra work to do to remove it. Luckily mine didn’t. There is a process to go about checking which basically just pour some water on the concrete and if it pools up - it’s sealed. If it soaks in the concrete it isn’t. Don’t quote me but I think that’s all it is.

Not a direct knock on Rustoleum's product per say, but I have a real issue with them including the term "Professional" in a kit that isn't 100% solids. That aside, on the dense patches of non-slip additive, you generally want to broadcast the aluminum oxide ("sand") by hand with spiked shoes after putting the final coat down (and then back roll to integrate). Not sure what Rustoleum's instructions were, but generally speaking that will give the most even results and has the added benefit of really letting you inch your way towards the amount you want to use (just like the flakes).

Hey bro great Update! I was going to use the Rustoleum too, and i read the exact same reviews that said you needed 2 kits to do a 2 car garage. My Garage is a 2.5, (with the workshop area i have behind) so i figured i would need 3 kits to do the job. I don't know how expensive it is in the states, but down here in Australia, its exxy as, one rustoleum 2 car kit is $300! So i figured I'd need $900 to buy 3 kits to get the job done. Then the multiple man hours to do the job over a few days, I ended up getting a quote that was $1300 for a professional to do it, so for $400 more, i did a little extra OT during one week, then put my feet up and drank beer while the guy did the work over 1 weekend. Benefit was he also concrete grinded my slab because he had all the right gear. Your garage looks great! similar to mine with the 2 tone and stripe haha! Floor looks good, i think the coverage issues are with the metallic colours like the blue and cherry bomb. The flake looks good but you will be cursing the day you drop a M5 bolt or nut on the floor and it just blends into the flake chips and it takes you half a hour to find where it fell. That's the reason i went solid colour on mine. Cant wait to see you deck it out mate! Rudi.

You guys really did a good job. I'm hoping in the next couple weeks now that the 110° days should be over that I can redo my garage floor. It's been 16 years since the last time we did anything with the floor. It definitely needs to be freshened up. With all the gas and oil that I have dropped on the floor over the years has taken its toll. The only thing I plan on doing different is to buy some pads to put down whenever I'm working on something in the garage. That way I don't have to trust the manufacturers saying on the package that it will stand up for gas and oil. Again really good job.

@@StewartMotoring Looks great. Yup...scratches will build up. It's a garage floor after-all. As long as it doesn't peel from your tires, you saved a tone of money, and it looks outstanding. I live in FL, and down here it's the heat and humidity. Our previous homeowner used a cheap paint on our floor, it it started peeling almost immediately. So, now I've got to get all that crap off the floor, then decide on a product. I was considering Leggari products with their lifetime warranty, but it's also, 3x's the price. I starting to wonder if maybe going with this product and either a 2nd clear coat, or maybe just getting a high-quality clear coat from another supplier would be the way to go. If I can keep it under $1K I'll be happy. But, that's a major job, to pull everything out of a garage, to resurface the floor. If I went through that and then had to do it again in 2-3yrs, I'd put a gun to my head....LOL. Definitely keep us all in the loop. If this lasts, it's a great option. Thanks for taking the time to do this....I know the video camera and explanations are an added inconvenience....so, alot of us really appreciate your taking the time.

I never used a primer when I did my previous house, I had zero issues. Prep is key. Clean then degrease then clean again to get all the degreaser out. I etched with Muriatic acid cleaned again with water then etched a second time and then neutralized the acid with a baking soda water mix. Cleaned again then hose it out througly with plain water and a stiff broom to get any residue out. Let dry for several days if you don't have a dehumidifier. Test the concrete for moisture before you apply anything, itf it still damp leave it to dry longer. I believe most of the issues people have with the product pealing is from moisture in the concrete.

@michaelg503
@michaelg503 3 года назад
While you may not need a degreaser as a result of lack of use, your floor might have a coating (not epoxy) on it from when it was installed. Regardless, coating or not, you must, at a minimum, etch your floor. This opens up the pores to the concrete and allows your product to be absorbed. The absolute best method is to grind the floor. You can rent a machine from any local tool rental company, Home Depot and perhaps Lowes. It's more work in the sense that it creates a LOT of dust, but just hose everything down, give the garage a chance to dry and then proceed with the install. When using etching material, you'll still be hosing down the floor and creating a chemical mess in your driveway plus you will also still need to wait for the floor to dry before beginning the install. Summation - yes, you need to at least etch your floor, using a grinder is better. Allow your floor to dry after rinsing off.

Will I still need to do all of that before applying the kit of the concrete/ house is newly built so its new concrete floors?
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
I’ll first say I’m no expert but I can understand your floors will be very clean. You may look at at least doing the acid etch so your floors are porous enough for the epoxy to grab onto. Also - there is a cure time the concrete needs that the instructions talk about for new concrete.

@StewartMotoring

It was like 100 per box. So 3 boxes 300 plus cleaning supplies and flakes probably around 400

I am curious as to how you kept all the sprays from splashing on the walls.

Thanks very much for your advice and help. I'll return the ball here. Paint your walls white. It reduces the amount of light wattage or boosts what you can see in a hurry. With all the tools and whatnot there is enough color without making your place dim with wall and ceiling paint. I like Zinnser123.

I painted my garage floor with a concrete paint 5 years ago, what prep would you recommend for my situation ? Or should I just pressure wash, clean and then paint on top whatever is left?
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 2 года назад
Tough to say.. if your old stuff is really stuck down, then sure paint on top. But don’t blame the new epoxy if the old stuff flakes up causing your new epoxy to lift too. Having said that.. either strip to bare concrete or clean it the best you can and go with it. I think if you read the instructions provided by rust oleum they talk about how to handle existing floor coatings. Check that out

I more think using two kits to do two coats. Why you put them together and just do one coat? Do you have good reasons? Cheers
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
Instructions didn’t include doing 2 coats. Just followed the instructions. But I mixed them together so that if there was any color difference between the 2 kits, I would get rid of that issue by mixing them

so initial kit and clear coat kit come seperate or together ? how much is total of 1 kit with clear coat around?
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
Each kit is/was around 100 bucks. So 1 color kit with flakes plus 1 clear kit is around 200$.

Power washing and acid etching is no substitute for shot blasting or grinding a floor. Also if you want a true lifetime floor I would recommend Urethane Cement with flake broadcast and MMA topcoat. Expensive but the best.

Nice. I wished I had put the color on my 3 car garage. I used the yellowish one forgot what is called..have a question though my walls are gray like urs too but I love red..what's the easiest way to paint the red line all around garage?? My wife did not want me to paint my man cave/garage red so I painteded gray like urs but I like the red stripe across😁
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
Determine the width of stripe and then how high off the floor you want the bottom to be. Go around and add little pencil tic marks around. Then add your width to that measurement and add a second tic mark to create your outline. Use some easy release edging tape specifically for striping and lay the tape down on your tic marks. Then paint (red is hard to cover with you’ll need more paint than you think). Remove tape before paint is dry so it doesn’t peel. And that’s pretty much all..I do have a video on this so you can watch that for reference.

what would happen if we dont etch it before painting ? i bought the whole kit and my hubby didnt use the etching powder -____-
@StewartMotoring
@StewartMotoring 3 года назад
Hmm, I’m not an expert at all this... but the purpose of the etch is to make the concrete surface rough to give a better surface for the epoxy to bond to. Same as when a car gets painted, you gotta scuff up the surface a little bit for the paint to stick better. So.. obviously worst case scenario.. the epoxy has trouble bonding to the floor.. therefore possibly peeling? Lots of variables.. of course.. your floor could be “rough” enough as it is and didn’t need it.. but it’s pretty cheap and just some extra labor to do it anyway. That’s all I know. Good luck!

Good job, but Why you leave no finished concrete on front garage under garage door? it not looks good when you open the door.
@StewartMotoring

The epoxy isn’t allowed to see outside weather conditions and direct sunlight. So the epoxy stops at the door seal.

Difficult to explain, it’s got texture but I wouldn’t say it’s rough. Still fine to lay on and roll around with a creeper.
