Commenting just to say your playing is awesome and I love the sound of the Rick through the pedal ❤

Thank you! I've been using it pretty much every one of my videos since this review - maybe time to post an update!

I own it & love it, I have all of the Sansamp Geddy pre amps & pedals & the MP40 is my favorite, this is a Limited Edition pedal get one while you can. 😀👍

That's awesome - sounds like quite the collection! They just released the YYZ Shape-Shifter - are you going to get one of those?

@@jamescoderre9595 I think it just came out within the past day or two. Glad I have my MP40 - Moving Pictures is a really important album to me and probably my favorite Rush album, so I'm happy! I could see using the DI-2112 at some point. Almost grabbed a CIJ Geddy Lee Jazz this past week but I don't really need it so I passed.

@@hieronymous7 Moving Pictures is an important Album to me as well, it was recorded at Le Studio Morin Heights an hour north of my home town Montreal .. I remember buying it the week it was released & racing h9ne to listen to it & being blown away ... I also saw them on the Moving Pictures tour at the Montreal Forum, the concert was recorded & later became the Exit Stage Left video ..... I was 16 at the time. .... great memories. I have both a CIJ & USA Geddy Lee Jazz bass both are really good basses ... a lot of bang for your buck the CIJ, MIJ & MI M Geddy Jazz basses have thinner necks.

Remember, Geddy used the Ric-O-Sound output on his Ric basses, which routes each pickup to it's own separate amp using a splitter. The combination of the two different amps can sound incredible if setup correctly. Chris Squire did the same thing. This pedal can't replicate that effect, which is why it's more suited for basses like Fenders.

Need to hear a Rickenbacker 4001 through it! Red Barchetta, The Camera Eye! Those are heavy Ricky tones with a lot of Ashley preamp overdrive! Analog Kid, Subdivisions, Chemistry, Jacob's Ladder, Natural Science and never forget FREEWILL!
@hieronymous7
@hieronymous7 Год назад
I actually used my '76 4001 at 8:38 and in a bass cover video of Limelight - you are right though, those are some amazing sounds - some of my favorites!
@dez1989
@dez1989 Год назад
@hieronymous7 Yes, the Ricky, tight and boost. Of course both pickups. Geddy always used both pickups. He would mess with the volume of the bridge pickup when he played live. You never know where the volume is because every break he has with his right hand, it goes directly to the volume of the bridge pickup. I don't know if it's just habbit making sure the volume is all the way up or not. He never seems to back off the volume. I've found myself doing that lately. It sound great with the Rickenbacker. They are lower output pickups but that's why there is a drive and volume knob!

I used to exclusively use my YYZ, but I would have to make huge EQ adjustments when I switched basses which quickly became a pain while trying to use it in a band. An EQ for the "deep" setting would be nice, I just use it for my high end channel now because I felt when I got a tone out of it that I liked, the bottom end was really lacking, and when I tried to beef up the bottom end with the Deep setting, I lost a lot of top end definition. Great pedals but maybe a little oversimplified.
@hieronymous7
@hieronymous7 2 года назад
Good points! I haven't used mine in a band setting yet. The 2112 preamp looks tempting (with separate outs for each channel). I like your idea of only using it for the high end, though I like the low channel sound too...
@Sheehy223
@Sheehy223 Год назад
@@hieronymous7 I got the YYZ shortly after it was released, had the DI 2112 even been announced at that point I would've just waited and gotten one of those instead. It's really easier for me to use two seperate preamps anyway, when I play my Ric I use the stereo out so I can really dial in Geddy's Permanent Waves - Signals tone, the YYZ is great for the top end because I can get the same kind of distortion on my bridge pickup that Geddy had with his Ashly SC40's and then blend in my neck pickup through the BDDI with a big bottom end boost, as my Ric needs a bit of help in that department. I have a toaster pickup in my neck position which is a lot brighter than the Hi-Gains Geddy had in his basses.

The tight channel does take out some low end. Geddy explains that he likes doing that when he uses Gibson bass (which have tons of low end). There’s a sweet demo of it at the end as well. I’m referring to the function of the Tight switch btw: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vknLfPgHUkw.html

It's very good if you've got a heavy right hand (like Geddy) on a very boomy and ringing low end bass. It kind of dials in a jazz bass like tone on almost anything

Cool review - pedal sounds cool - similar to many others (to my ears ...thru youtube) One thing that didn't overly surprise me, is the Ric sounding weak and anemic - I have always WANTED to love them...but I get zero inspiration from them....HOWEVER, it DID come to life (a bit) from the pedal - so that was a nice surprise. Subb'd - cool content and I like the format. Cheers

@@hieronymous7 Yeah, that may help - I just find zero inspiration tonally from them - nothing personal to you or any other Ric fan. :) The ergonomics just don't work for me, except visually, I think they look really sharp.... thanks for the content - cheers

I think it sounds great! I used it on my bass cover of Vital Signs. I'm finding it to be a little darker than I expected, it does put a blanket on the highs the Alembic is capable of, but not necessarily a bad thing.

@@hieronymous7 definitely appreciate the info; my old BDDI is just tired (I got it in 98) so I’ve been trying to figure out what to get next as a different flavor.
@hieronymous7
@hieronymous7 2 года назад
@@kitsapbass9348 I think the YYZ is different (though I've never played a BDDI) - it has the clean/deep channel with the (unadjustable) low-pass filter and the drive channel - changing the blend gets some different sounds. Depends on what you're looking for!

I remember when Geddy went exclusively Fender J bass and revealed that many songs on MP were actually the Jazz and not the Rick and everybody was like, "Yay, I can get Geddy's sound without a $3000 Rick!" The Rick in this video proves Geddy's classic sound is and has always been the Rick
@AtomizedSound
@AtomizedSound 7 месяцев назад
Hmm no. The sound is helped with the Jazz bass and that’s the longest he’s been using. The Rick has a distinct sound but he’s used the Jazz for so much longer now his “sounds really his baked into his jazz and how he drives his sound

Is that true ? : You can change nothing on the deep, the EQ change only the drive, and the shape shifter can be use only when the Boost is in too and damn it sound gnarly :O
@hieronymous7

Yes, I believe this is all true - especially the gnarly part! 😁 You can adjust how much of the deep sound comes in with the blend knob, but can't affect the tone of the deep sound itself.
