Hi Tony. Me gain from downunder. I have checked my 4040 pro and it has the upgraded Z axis and the Z probe seems to work as it should. Hopefully no problems atm. Thanks again for another helpful setup video.
Just found this video today. Thanks for this one Tony I have the old style z and was one that had the electrical problem as well. Take car and have a great holiday season.
thank you for the work you have done in letting them know the problems and helping them with solutions. I just got mine last friday and it has all of the upgrades. again. thank you.
OK, upon closer inspection I do have the upgrade. Still in the box I initially looked at the lead screw and it did not protrude past the frame like yours, so it looks like they addressed that concern as well. I received an email from them about my missing SD card and much to my surprise they're sending a complete controller package to insure I have everything. What a great company! I ordered my Makita router and can now start buying some 1/4 bits instead of 1/8" bits. I was waiting to assemble the CNC based on that and your video. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Tony, Thanks for your response! I know that you probably already have this info but, for your viewer who asked: The support rods are OD 16mm ID 10mm and are hard to find - Solid rods are quite common. Based on your recommendation, I'll use solid rods although, I had planned to use hollow for weight relief. As you say, rigidity is the primary concer. The Lead screws are T10 - Diameter 10mm, Pitch 2mm, Lead 4mm, Double Start(?). I'll be tryings to salvage as many of the original components as posibble so, I wanted the new components to match the original specs (except length) as closely as possible. I have no idea where to find longer front/back profile covers and will probably need to have those made. I've also ordered the compact router 1.25 hp spindle upgrade (with 65mm mount and dust shoe). I've checked (per your excellent video) and I have the upgraded Z-axis so, I hope that will be adequate for the heavier spindle. As far as upgrades go, I 'm hoping this first one will be simple and straight forward. Both Z and X Axes will remain unchanged, and the Y-Axis will only be legthened. Eventually, I will attempt to upgrade steppermotors and power supply board but, that's a whole other level of bewilderment for me. Thanks again for your great videos, wonderful advice, and for sharing your great experience with all of us!
Well done Tony, great information ... I have the old style and am going to contact Genmitsu and see what they will do about it. I'm from Leeds too and still say ZED ha ha 😀
Thanks. I sent them a message about the flex and they asked for a video. Sent it and the very next day I got a notice that the upgrade had been shipped under warranty on Oct 1st. 2023. Easy peasy. Pretty much the same for everybody in the 4040 FB group who has contacted Sainsmart customer service.
Hi I think we have been lucky but there are a number of uses that they will not replace theirs, the video that i had seen was unbelievable and they refused him. not good service.
GRAZIE !!
I purchased the CNC 4040 pro and I'm waiting for delivery, this video of yours alarms me because I don't know which Z axis it will arrive with! I am grateful for this video of yours which explains the problems and solutions in exhaustive detail. THANK YOU !!@@Tonys.Top.Tips.Workshop
Hi Tony, Really enjoy your videos. I just purchased a Genmistu 4040-pro based, in part, on info provided on your channel. I have no experience with upgrading CNC machines but, I need to upgrade the Y-Axis to 36" for most of my needs. If you would be interested, I need advice (and maybe parts suppliers) for this type of upgrade. You seem to be one of the best sources of info on the 4040-Pro and I'm hoping you've alreqady given some consideration to this type of upgrade. If you're too busy for this, I understand, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks for the great videos!
Hi thanks for your interest in my videos, I have not given any thought to upgrading the size of the machine but sainsmart are supposedly bringing out an expansion kit for the 4040 I would wait to see what they come up with. I have a large 6090 machine so I wouldn't upgrade. I have been chatting with a chap who contacted me from my channel he wanted the diameter of the guide rods on both x and y axis and the internal diameter. He is upgrading to solid rods to give more stability he will let me know on that. You would have the linear screw to change and the front and back profile sections. It can be done but you would have to use solid rods or there would be too much flexing especially if you upgrade to a larger spindle. I am currently looking at upgrading to a 800watt or 1.5 kw water cooled spindle kit I have that on my pro machine and it is quiet and runs all day. Hope this helps
Merci , J'ai reçu la 40x40 le 17 janvier 2024 , Toutes les modifications dont vous parlez dans cette vidéo ont été appliquées. I received the 40x40 on January 17, 2024, All the modifications you talk about in this video have been applied. HAHAHA ! and The color is now uniform with the rest of the machine Bye , encore une fois merci
Tony I just found your video, I was looking for the z frame, not the module. I intend to purchase the 4040 and will make the effort to make sure my model has the upgraded Z axis, but not sure if I can be sure. Perhaps I will call them. Once again thank you.
Hi thanks for your feedback. I received mine from SainSmart as I had flexing on my original Z axis so they sent me one free of charge. All the new one have the upgraded Z axis fitted. You purchase them from SainSmart but try complaining about flex in your old one they might replace it free of charge. Let me know how you get on
Hi thanks for your question. The original block, you mean what goes up and down. Yes you would in theory but you would still have a z axis that is flexible as the weakness is that block hope you understand
Upon receiving my 4040 I believe I have the older Z assembly. I contacted Sainsmart support and they immediately returned my email. They stated that all 4040 pros have the updated Z assembly starting mid October. Judging by your video I don't believe I have that one, so they said to take a photo and will remedy if needed. Very satisfied with Sainamart for such quick correspondence. I also received the controller, but the SD card was not included. Will I need a computer to initially set up the CNC? Only have one in the home, not the shop, and that is why I bought the controller
Hi glad to here about Sainsmart sorting you out. It should have left the factory with the updated one. I think they hope that some uses dont bother and just use it. My sd card came in the end of the little memory stick reader that came with the rotary unit but you might not have got that. If you want to use it from the pc via usb cable you will need to follow the instruction to set up. With the offline controller once you have done your design and created the g code program and copied it to the sd card you can follow the instructions and run the program from the controller. If you watch my videos on cutting the gaming steering wheel you will see how easy it is. I have never had a failed job yet it just runs and no pc connected. Good luck
tony thanks for the good video. in a other vieo i haven read that the tubes are hollow, is this so? Is there a picture somewhere or documentation that gives the size of the tubes. When the tubes are hollow, i will upgrade to solid ones for more stiffnes.
Hi thanks for the interest in the video the tubes are hollow they are on mine been one of the first I have not had any other info about upto date ones. Would have to check the gauge of the rods.
@@Tonys.Top.Tips.Workshop Tony thx for the quick reply. I would upgrade myself, the price for solid rods is not that high. Just to calculate if it makes a difference, do you know the inner diameter of the tubes or the wall thickness?
@@Tonys.Top.Tips.Workshop thx, just did a small calculation with a force of 100kg on de the middle of the tube with a length off 500mm. from factory: 16mm tube 3mm wall thickness, 0.64 deflection. upgrade to solid: 16mm tube, 0.24 deflection. - a lot less deflection with solid tubes so if the deflection now is good, like you mention in the videos, i can make the tubes longer for more working area. Making the tubes 700m long, a working area around 600x600, gives the same deflection of 0,65mm maybe also useful for someone, if i can change the working area in the software, i for a bigger working area
@@Tonys.Top.Tips.WorkshopWould you consider doing a video that tested out the machine capability's with that new z assembly? I would really love to buy this machine with the larger router, to use for woods of all sots, but dont want to be disappointed in the flex, chatter, or low cutting speeds.
@@dyland359 It really wants testing with the upgraded router and I dont have one. There are some videos on youtube showing this. On the facebook forums for the 4040 all those that have changed theirs have said it's made a vast difference even when cutting aluminium. I was chatting to a subscriber tonight and he had just received his 4040 and it had the old z axis on. He contacted Sainsmart and they are changing it. If I do upgrade the spindle it will be to a water cooled much quieter.
Does the new 4040 pro that sainsmart are currently selling already have the upgrade?…or one needs to buy it separately? I’m currently in the process of buying the 4040 pro, thanks 🙏….
Hi I could not say if it has the upgraded z axis, you would have to email them or speak to someone that has just received theirs. It should come with the upgrade as the original one is too unreliable. Hope this helps but please keep me informed Tony
Tony, I received my 4040 with the 65-69 mm, I intend to use a palm router. Will the Z probe work with a router? Also my CNC did not ship with the upgraded Z axis I will contact customer service.
Hi thanks for replying When you check connect it up but you touch the cutter with the probe don't just send it down to touch off in case it doesn't. The red light will show if it works. Check the flex on the z axis before you use then if its bad you can send it back if they wont send out the upgrade. keep me informed Cheers Tony
