We reached a point in life where footwear is considered racist.

Again, saying someone shouldn't be allowed to wear a piece of clothing simply because it's not their race/culture is literally racial segregation.

I think a lot of people do care about Nilou's shoes, but mainly because of the fact that you can see her feet and people on the internet tend to like that sort of thing. That's true culture.

That part of "random ppl from north America trying to feel morally superior when they don't know anything about the culture and just speak for them" has become a true constant nuisance. They really feel they can act like high intellectuals when they can't understand how little that affects to the rest and believe they're doing a favor.

This style of shoe/sandal has literally been used all over the world for all of human history. It's not a big leap to go from "strap a thick sole to your foot" to "wind the straps around the leg too" followed by "wind them in a symmetrical pattern that looks nice". There are some things so basic that you can't claim they come from any specific culture.

Ok I am Mexican, and genuinely don’t care if you want to use ponchos or big mariachi sombreros, those are just clothes you’re not harming nobody. Of course if you wear them to make fun of somebody we have a problem, but if you use them because you like them for being comfortable (ponchos are really nice) then more power to you. As a Persian person, I really loved Nilou’s design, seeing as it was based on ancient Persian costumes. People on twitter are extremely sensitive, and probably aren’t even from the Middle East themselves.

Spoiler What's absolutely hilarious to me is it's been confirmed in the story that Nilou is a theatre performer and her outfit is inspired by the Goddess of Flowers. She MODIFIED it to suite her style basically. So in other words, a lot of hate towards her is completely null and voided. That's what happens with spoilers ig, you don't get to understand why they're designed like they are.

I’m glad I’ve left Twitter. After being recorded and doxxed without my consent, I received multiple pings from others bothering me and harassed me. Twice I made new accounts, first was for a stalker, then the bullying. When a site is allowed to do this, then fight over a fictional characters shoes, humanity has really sunk so low.

So heres the problem... even if someone FROM that culture has an issue with it (keep in mind this is giving them a lot of leeway by even allowing them to lay claim to that style of footware in its entirity) it still doesn't matter. These people act like the culture of their people belongs to THEM and only them. It would be one thing if this was intellectual property, licenses and TMed, and everything like that... but this is literally style of shoe... Which btw lots of cultures had similar styles to that. Romans for example.

The funniest part is the fact those shoes are very similar to shoes that greeks, romans, and various middle eastern cultures wore. So they're not even exclusively Japanese.

About the only time I'd listen to the "cultural appropriation" BS is when a piece of clothing is only worn during funerals or similarly solemn functions. Even then, I wouldn't give a damn if someone used that piece of clothing, but would just understand that it might change the nature of the artwork for some people.

I am in a constant struggle with this channel. On one side, YOU don't really do anything wrong. You make videos about those topics, you make them good, you give an effort that I love and that deserves my attention. AGAIN, style and traditions are NOT static objects that a group of people or nations can CLAIM to own. I've wrote in detail about this in his other videos so I'll just copy paste cause I SWEAR this applies to like HALF of the people on twitter he makes the videos on. : 1. WHY will you "not accept" this if the shoes are/were Japanease? Maybe they saw the shoes - thought they would go well with certain dress - then they drew their idea. WHERE is the issue? - If you are offended EITHER on behalf of other culture OR as belonging to that culture - you REALLY need to introspect why that is. If you look at the history of ANY culture/region, you'll find that whatever CURRENT traditions/culture they have - they are either borrowed or tweaked from the previous generations or NEARBY cultures/regions - maybe because they were appealing or useful or both. Then WHY is it a problem here? "Because the artist isn't from the same region"? BS! Humans have ALWAYS taken influence from ANY AND ALL things they can take influence from. Just look at India or Europe or Asia OR LITERALLY ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET. They just didn't have access to magic devices that can give them inspiration from things being made 1000s of kilometers away! - If "Preserving the culture" is your issue with this - i.e. "not being accurate will eventually lead to originals being forgotten/misremembered" - then you haven't actually thought about it! SURE, preserving old culture IS important - but only in the sense that it is recorded and the origins understood and remembered! AND we're doing that now BETTER than any other point in history! BUT it is NOT our GOAL to keep the traditions the same - IF we did that then humanity would have STAGNATED. By modifying and adapting our cultures have we progressed this far. In fact, taking inspiration from multiple cultures is a cause FOR CELEBRATION. There's so much beauty to be found LITERALLY everywhere - why is it then a sin to be inspired by it? Just like the current traditions, future traditions will ALSO be a result of available influences. But this time, due to globalization, future will be inspired by pretty much ALL current traditions and cultures and everything! This is LITERALLY humanity BECOMING ONE, united community - with ideas and values FROM EVERYONE! - These arguments also apply if the incident was something like "a guy wearing a bellydancing outfit that's 'not accurate'." It doesn't just have to be art or fiction. 2. "cannot draw men in bellydancing outfits" "cannot do bellydancing" "aren't even [] allowed to" - WHAT in the actual fuk? (Context: "Genshin Artists have had enough" video) - First off, SURE, you can CHOOSE to follow a religion or culture or tradition that prohibits you to do certain things. That's fine - follow whatever religion or culture or traditions you want, but for those who AREN'T following the same, you CANNOT and SHOULD NOT force those ideals on others. - Also "TRADITIONALLY" women ALSO weren't allowed to do certain things. It's because of RATIONAL THINKING like asking "why the fuk shouldn't women be allowed to do X" were we able to move past our shitty takes of the past. Tradition DOES NOT EQUAL correctness. If you aren't harming anyone, then you can do anything you want. Just like I've stated before, we are a GLOBAL species now. It is IMPOSSIBLE, IMMORAL and UNETHICAL to stop humanity from taking it's natural course of inspiration and creation.
