Georg Complains: Journalism

Oh yeah, right, doing one of these again. Journalism! I was thinking about journalism this week because I accidentally watched the first Republican primary debate. About halfway through I realized I wasn't watching Celebrity Death Match, and the people weren't made out of clay, they were just covered in it. But as interesting as it was- more than the platitudes, I found interesting the moderation. So let's go- time to complain about journalism.

There's a reason the film Network was developed and released all the way back in 1976. News was always mostly nonsense. The real trouble starts when policymakers take that nonsense seriously
@ThatPianoNoob

I don't think they do.. the people take it seriously and from there on they had to pretend these things were real. Being elected by those same people after all.

Except Network was an exaggeration. In fact, audiences and reviewers criticized it for being too over the top. Now the film mostly seems like an understatement.

As a former journalist, I spend weeks and sometimes months on research and sourcing information. The information I wrote about had to be valid, but many people on networks are doing interest pieces which mainly rely on sensationalism. The truth is boring and scary, but it's the truth. Many people would much rather be blissfully ignorant than woefully educated.

@@rutessian not so sure, I was recently in public life. One of the reasons I stepped back was the issue of constantly dealing with people who only listen and/or agree with information that already agrees with their biases. Resident: The boat immigrants are sponging off us and living in 5 star hotels.... Councillor: Uhm no actually they are not. Yes they are being paid for by central government, but they get put in the same housing as everyone else. Resident: They are taking all our jobs Councillor: Nope, they can't work, they would love to. In fact that's what they came here to do, work and support themselves and their families. they are not asking for handouts Resident: Well, my neighbour's friend's nephew cannot get a job because they are all being taken by the immigrants. Councillor: As i said the illegals cannot work, those on a working visa can. But if you get him to give me a call, I've dozens of employers who constantly complain to me they cannot get enough staff.

I think it's always been like this... just as time and US media 'culture' changes, so too does the type of journalist/newr-reporter change. Every good circus understands that the circus master much change with the times or else they go bankrupt due to lack of ticket sales. It's the constant war between entertainment vs. academic pursuits that ruins most things. And entertainment always comes out on top because funding is easier to get. I think lots of people are simply indifferent. Just tuning in to see who threw a chair at who and then switching the channel to some daytime television to play in the background.

Just as obesity in children is a black mark on gym class. But really, these news shows are so finely tuned in piquing our fear response, knowing our attention span, our horniness for inane chatter....all of it is because they've dredged all of America's personal data points. We tacitly chose this system by choosing to use social media.

Yes. We need to teach big-picture, critical-thinking to children, or as early as it is possibly comprehensible to whatever age group in public school. Even if it is arguable that only a minority of them would understand it... what else isn't that true of, that we do teach anyway? Everyone is taught what the Scientific Method is in middle-school (at least I was, 30 years ago), but it seems like it doesn't stick with a lot of people either. But we could at least try, and the fact that we don't is no accident, unfortunately. Thinking back on what I was taught about history, at the same time as we had rationality in Science and Math and English classes, boggles my mind, looking back.

Actual, good journalism is a beautiful thing to see. Unfortunately, it's also very resource and time intensive and usually doesn't provide much material reward. I wonder how many news organizations today could or would do a story like the one portrayed in 'Spotlight'. All news organizations have one bias or another, but I think the general public's understanding to these biases are simplified to the point where many will just reject anything from certain sources out of hand. It's almost never a journalist making up a story out of whole cloth, it's who they use for sources, which sources they exclude, that kind of stuff. I really suggest people look up the five filters of mass media as described by 'Manufacturing Consent." I think that does a good job of explaining the factors one should consider when thinking about the news.

I loved the humor in the form of the editing at 9:16. The dramatic slow reveal of the article, descending further and further into madness as we- the viewer- try and anticipate what the hell is so important that it took up the entire front page of the magazine. It somehow continues to surprise with each sweeping vertical slope downards, until finally revealing that this headline worthy news essentially amounted to: "a monkey descendent adjusted the cloth on its body"

I agree that people are pretty uninformed, but if you look at polling, a majority of people generally have the right ideas about most major issues. I’d say that the greatest threat to mankind isn’t that people don’t want action on things like climate change, it’s that our leaders have no intention of doing what people want. In other words, the threat is to mankind is that a tiny minority fully plan to let the worst happen to the majority so they can accumulate as much as possible before the collapse.

But the ultra wealthy know that they need to make people feel like they don't have the time: keep them busy with entertainment and/or having to work long hours to afford to live a comfortable life, and they won't be concerned with such "priorities".

@@wombatjack3995 He's making a larger point (I wouldn't call unique either, but that is definitely not bog standard) about people's behavior that you seem to be missing or purposely ignoring. The whole thrust of his argument is that the 'news' are an exact reflection of what people are most likely to consume, even though they are apt to in the same breath criticize it for being facile and biased. Often those who complain the loudest about 'traditional media having failed us' would never even think about digging around for better (drier) sources of information. So he's not so much reiterating the old point that most widely read news outlets mainly put out garbage (though he acknowledges that), but seems to argue that while good journalism exists most of it is actually a bizarre kind of entertainment that is not even designed to convey balanced information, and the reason is not maliciousness, moral corruption or laziness in it itself, but that readers/viewers want to be stimulated rather than receive nuanced dossiers and analyses about what's actually happening in the world.

Don't beat yourself up. I really appreciate this format, and normally the subject is either more pressing or a little recognized detail in a much belabored story previously reported with less detail and much more repetition. Maybe I'll watch it again tomorrow. But most importantly I will still be a fan of your channel tomorrow and likely for many more tomorrows. Sometimes I even wonder what your channel will look like in twenty years, maybe RU-vid Immersive VR. Maybe I'll be one of the old people who sit in the park and look at a screen still. Or maybe there'll be a century long interlude where most of us are brains in jars who use RU-vid Immersive VR so that we can feel like we're sitting in the park still using devices with screens. Damn, that "ghosts and demons" poll kinda says and explains it all, on its own. If that's what we're dealing with, is it any surprise that these same people cannot coherently understand complex topics that the real truth about is simply depressing to fully comprehend? I agree with everything you say here, but particularly that "people who are interested in, and can understand, complex human topics are, and have always been, in the minority". And though you alluded to it several times, it's this bad without you even directly mentioning deliberate, engineered propaganda. Like just about anything one hears on NPR or traditionally "left-leaning" big corporate media about the war in Ukraine. As a life-long Leftist who cut my political-awareness-teeth on the Supreme Court's interference in the 2000 election, PNAC, 9/11 and the immediate irrational focus upon Iraq in the aftermath, and then the actual war itself, watched or listened to Democracy Now for my whole 20's and early 30's, and still do when I get the chance to or am in the mood, I feel like I'm living in Looney-Toon-Land listening to all the corporate "left" outlets that criticized that war, cheering for the war in Ukraine. I feel sick remembering Obama's "chemical weapons Syria" speeches, the 2014 Ukraine Coup, and realizing that, essentially since the assassination of JFK, whatever one wants to think about that, but since then, there has simply been no real, actual, anti-war choice for the public, in this so-called Democracy, when Eisenhower had given his cowardly, last minute, end-of-term (but all the same very clear) warning about the Military-Industrial-Complex only a few short years earlier. In short, all of us who are curious, clear-eyed, and rational about these topics regardless of how sickening the reality is, have been expertly corralled off to the edges, and essentially out of, both major political parties. Whichever one isn't currently in power takes on a fake "anti-war" stance on whatever war the one in power is in charge of, but then does the exact same thing themselves, the next place on the globe the people truly in charge of things want to focus, when they are pushed back into power by the pendulum of general public sickness with whatever the last war was. I was a teenager during Clinton's time in office, and got the misleading impression, I guess mainly due to the collapse of the CCCP and my own youthful ignorance, that there was some kind of difference between the parties on the matter, when that time had already long passed before I was even born. At least there is some kind of actual choice when it comes to domestic policy still, but even that is also obviously and deeply corrupt. I remember being an older teenager and thinking about all the older people talking about "The Lesser Evil" before the 2000 election and thinking they were nuts... now I get it. But those of us who do get it are simply not part of the discourse on any corporate media... and though I have a romanticized view, still, of the major media in the 50's and 60's and 70's, before the eradication of the Fairness Doctrine and the Neoliberal, Corporate takeover of *everything* , you're probably right that it was never good.... it only got worse than it already was in the first place due to those things.

When immersed in the horror of modern life people like to give themselves the out, if the victims of horror are struggling, maybe I don't have to feel sorry for them. Maybe they deserve it. Maybe if it's meant to be, it will be. It's Melvin Lerner's Just-World Hypothesis, or maybe I should say Martin Luther's Work Ethic, meets Timothy Snyder's Politics of Inevitability. Those Politics are the precursor for the one loud clear voice of the Politics of Eternity. God? Dear Leader? TomAtoe, tomAHto.

I needed about 30 minutes listening to politics to realize it was entirely performative. Meaning - it means nothing but hollow rhetoric. Climate change is real - yes. In your head.
