George Carlin's classic standup routine about the importance of 'Stuff' in our lives. This was from his appearance at Comic Relief in 1986. Farewell George 1937-2008 www.HaphazardStuff.com
Reminds me of another of his jokes, “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”
He had a way of making it sound like art and as though he was making up on the Fly rather than a skit that he went over multiple times obviously like any comedian
Agreed! Maybe we’re not looking deep enough into his meaning for it. There’s brown boxes in the background. Could be representative of the normality of our society’s culture. He’s dressed in the same color brown to represent trying to fit in. If you ever pay attention his backdrops are always artistic while his clothes are always simple and basic. George Carlin was an artistic genius that understood how to truly speak to a crowd.
He actually wore a lot of colorful clothes back in the 70s and 80s. The all black look started in the early 90s and he adopted it for the rest of his career.
Although I agree that his material/viewpoints has thus far proven to be timeless, I would argue this particular bit of his was far more relevant in the mid-to-late 80's, as that era in America was unquestionably the most culturally and economically excessive era in American history. Christ, just look at the cars, the fashion, the hairstyles and of course the drug usage from the era. Sheesh! That aside, I must disagree with one of his points about the purpose of a house... Our houses are primarily for shelter rather than a mere cover for our piles of stuff. At the same time, he's 100% spot on about the inflated size of our shelters, which is only to cover our excess stuff, haha! A true genius, that man...
I just sent my Dad this clip because we were talking about decluttering. I love watching George Carlin ... he is hilarious. What a comedy legend!! 🙌🙌🙌💚
Yesterday, my 63 year old uncle said: "her stuff is stuff and every one else's stuff is shit" while we were moving my sister to a new place and I felt like the George Carlin had brought us together.
What can one really say after watching that -- he was a talented genius but most of all, he was passionate about a lot of things that we are still dealing with today. He was truly a genius -- Thanks George...
George blessed us with many decades of his musings. What an amazing human he was. A modern day prophet. The world is a better place for George coming by. Genius.
Wouldn’t say funniest, but hits the fucking nail on the head with absolutely everything he talks about. There are times where I’m like yeah nah, this is the take where he gets it wrong, but by the end of the bit I’m like, fuck, I can’t argue his point ahaha
I miss Carlin, it's a damn shame he passed away. Would have loved to see what he would have to say about America today. My only regret never seeing him live. My parents are in their late 60s/early 70s and they loved him and watched every one of his HBO specials..
During his time , George spoke about almost every topic there is regarding American culture. If you're thinking about politics, his stance was that this country was bought and paid for long time ago, and that elections are a farce. He said politicians are not his act's target because they come from American homes, so why are there no people of vision in office if we supposedly can do better. He said the public sucks, and is to blame for their own political woes. He also spoke on gun control, capital punishment, Wall Street greed, and much more.
A74: If GC were still alive today I suspect he would be an EXTREMELY bitter old man, hardly a happy camper. NO LONGER FUNNY. Check out his late material to see where he was headed.
George Carlin and Richard Pryor....The 2 most insightful and legendary comics ever...RIP to both of them. The tears of laughter I have spilled watching these two giants could fill a swimming pool...If there was a Mt Rushmore for comedians, you know George and Richard would be front and center...
After watching, anyone else start looking around at stuff around you for things to eliminate? I myself found stuff to dispose of almost immediately lol
That was probably his point. We collect stuff all our life, and then leave without any of it. When Alexander died, his hands were made visible from his coffin as per his will, so people may see that the greatest conqueror of all times left with empty hands.
same here.... I love how George Carlin candidly tells it like it is. God rest his soul, I remember listening to the radio while driving on a highway, and I was shocked to learn of his death the day he passed away, he will truly be missed, by the way he was the conductor on Shining Time Station, used to watch it on PBS growing up in the early 90's.
We already have a bunch of our picnic leftovers up there. Then there's our stuff that's in orbit. Now we have stuff on Mars. Everywhere we go, every computerized agent we send out there... it has a payload of STUFF.
