Modern military laser systems are proving to be more and more crucial as warfare is increasingly fought in more technologically advanced ways. Laser systems can perform a variety of tasks but they are mainly used to neutralise threatening targets. The systems are highly accurate and effective in taking out targets, specifically those that are unmanned like drones. We’re going to look at the most effective of these offerings that the US, Germany and Israel use to protect their land from unwanted aggression.

Since laser induced fusion is a thing I started wondering if someday lasers will be so powerful and highly focused that it would not only melt the target, but actually initiate just enough fusion to cause an explosion. Most people also are not aware that the tracking and the focus are really the biggest challenge (you need to track the exact point, to add the energy to this single point - the smaller the beam the better, but also harder to track), unless you really can build a pulse laser that really only needs one single pulse to destroy a target. Reflective armor might seem as a thing, but actually a mirror also has limits, and wavelength plays a big role, too.
@BodenPflanze
@BodenPflanze Год назад
Laser induced fusion kind of works diffrent than what lasers actually do. Even if you had a powerful laser that would be able to do large amounts of damage, it would never cause a fusion, because Laser induced fusion kind of works by using multiple lasers that hit symetrical points inside something that is similiar to a cylinder. The Lasers hitting the walls of the cylinder will create kind of shockwaves which will compress the fuel core and increase its temperature so much, that it is able to create a fusion. The fuel Core is also made out of specific elements that are needed for a fusion and it all needs to be very symetrical or else the core woulnd be able to completly compress like we need it too. You also would need a lot of Energy to get a laser even that strong to do large amounts of damage on a target, but fusion wouldnt happen.
@marcelmommsen5308
@marcelmommsen5308 Год назад
@@BodenPflanze I know that, but I wondered if someday it might be powerfull enough to cause fusion although it is not causing an implosion. Simply by producing enough heat in one tiny spot (so that inertia and temperature is enough).

@ProjectsBlack You are decades out of date. There have been auto trackers dating back before 1990, long before modern AI. Would a laser be effective on say a hyper sonic cruise missal with a shiny mirror like surface? It would just reflect the laser. The way around this though would be to use the laser as a targatting tool so that a fast ground to air missal could take the hypersonic cruise missal out with high speedy accuracy.
@jdlessl

Mirrors aren't 100% effective, and will absorb a small amount of incident light. If there's enough of it, this can in turn damage the reflectivity, making it less reflective, making it take more damage, etc.

EMP can damage own electronics and therefore hardkill sensor and control electronics (own) has to be offset from the EMP pulses duly protected . I wonder if you could make air mobile lasers carrying enough firepower to attack and destroy drone swarms. Make them fairly large, and send four or five against swarms of enemy drones. Maybe they could herd these drone swarms into larger swarms that we could shoot down more easily. The best bet would be to build these hunter drones as quad rotor drones that are fairly strong. Maybe we could make them able to fire bullets in case of stormy weather - 7.62 or 12.7. They could make the system somewhat modular, so that you don't have to bring guns along on a clear day, or lasers along on a rainy day.

I've seen some powerful lasers vs mirrors. The mirrors dont fare well cause they heat up and crack, eventually melt. Some lasers are powerful enough to basically punch a hole straight through it 😅 photons are FAST, have enough of them and eventually it's like a minigun of light bullets, they impart momentum and heat reflecting the photons off, but that energy has to go somewhere
@madsam0320
@madsam0320 Год назад
If the missile spins as well, the heat will be distributed and dissipated. A highly reflective mirror is going to absorb very little of the energy anyway, a fraction of one percent, and it can be insulated with a ceramic jacket. But better still is a kind of reflector that redirects the beam back to source. The body is a honeycomb of 90 degree dimples, coated with a transparent material for aerodynamic. That will brings the taste of the medicine back to the laser.😊

@@madsam0320 A rotating missile effects it control surfaces and path. Even if rotating, the lasers only take a couple of seconds to work. Commercial Lasers have been cutting thru metals since before 1990. The first pulse will evaporate the reflective coating while the second pulse starts on the ceramics. Ceramics don't conduct heat well, so the laser will be more effective and start evaporating the ceramic. The honeycomb allows the laser to bypass it thru the holes and start on the next surface.

Could a common sense cheap counter to these laser be to coat missiles / drones in mirror finish? Lasers are not impact projectiles and lose their power if they can be deflected instead of being absorbed. The best mirrors have a reflective coefficient of 1 part per million, so if you need 100KW to burn through an almost black surface, you will need close to 1million times more power and what kind of laser could generate those types of power?

> The best mirrors have a reflective coefficient of 1 part per million In a lab, sure. Now try getting that level of efficiency from a free-flying missile that has to endure repeated handling in combat situations, shocks, weather conditions, etc. A tiny smudge of grease on that shiny surface absorbs the laser light and heats up to oven temperatures (see the well known documentary Real Genius for a demonstration), which warps and cracks the mirror, causing it to be less reflective, absorbing more energy, rinse & repeat and the missile goes down. Even then, the goal can sometimes be to simply elevate the cost of the opposing weapons by forcing them to include more and more esoteric defense systems. More expensive missiles == fewer missiles, as surely as if you'd shot the difference out of the sky. That sort of calculus typically favors the weapons system for which each 'shot' costs a couple dollars worth of electricity.

I think that result is for a mirror optimized to reflect one frequency against that target frequency. If you can tune the laser, or if you don't know the frequency of the laser beforehand, you can't get that performance even in a lab.

Wrong, 0.0001% reflection mirror is a very special all dielectric high reflector that only works at certain angles and wavelengths. 20 kw laser? That's maybe good enough to disable a tiny drone or possibly disable sensors. The common minimal laser for industrial or home workshop is 60 kw and that's generally for cutting and etching materials a few inches at most from the laser. If the laser has to pass through long distances of atmospheric conditions, it's likely going to be refracted and dispersed to some amount. US and Israeli laser weapons appear to be achieving some kind of minimal threshold for fielding a viable weapon on any platform including aircraft and ships with the US looking to develop an enormous, nuclear powered laser for its largest aircraft carrier, the Ford class which is already generating enormous power for its propulsion, EMALS and other operating systems.

Laser have multiple weaknesses. First, current technology not allows really high output - 150kWt is a practical ceiling, which is barely enough to hit a small UAV made of plastic. Second, laser generates a huge amount of heat and cannot operate without cooling for substantial time, unlike projectiles weapons. Third, lenses and windows must be clean on microscopic level to prevent burning of themselves, which is about impossible task in combat. Fourth, and this is the biggest problem, is air condition. Dust, mist, low clouds, sand or smoke will effectively disperse the beam, thus completely neutralislzing its effect on target.

Most lasers are pulsed for decades now. These lasers in the video are really multiple pulses that last seconds. The peak power of pulsed lasers are higher for the same average power. For these multiple pulsed lasers that fire over seconds, the key is total energy delivered not so much peak or average power. There are other very short pulsed systems they are working on that have extreme peak powers that just a couple pulses destroy things.

Funny comment but why not. ;-) I live in a house that for more than three years has been supplied with energy only by sun and wind and a storage system. It works great if you think about it in advance and include energy-saving measures and energy-efficient appliances. It will be decades before this concept is accepted in a country like the USA. Europe is far ahead in this respect.

Why would it be shocking? German weapons have always excelled, even the US uses many of them. And one of Germany's closest allies just happens to be fielding laser weapons.

Can there be anything faster and better than lasers unless you're a super genius or something to figure that out.
@CurrentlyAimless

"Peace", its probably not really faster but could nullify the need of defences overall, but since we are Humans, laser, and drone warfare it is. =)

The germans are brilliant at war weapons once they switch on to do it. It was a German that put the first man on the moon it was USA that paid for it. German first V2 rockets. German first jet planes. Germany best engineers in the world not USA.

For me under 300kw laser didn't interested you didn't have more Time than 1,5second must destroyed about a Swarm and only that Power make it quick 50 Watts all for extreme short range....

I have wrote a book about this(It Society the rise the height the fall), specially the multiple lasers hitting at one point to increase damage... But my idea was pulsar, like nuclear will be used to create power and shoot it at objects...

We are communicating over the internet that uses 40 to 160 lasers wavelengths down each fiber optic for over 25 years. This video talks about 6 laser wavelengths being used. Combing laser wavelengths is old tech.
