In this video I’ll explain what is the Gestalt cycle of experience, how an interruption in the cycle can lead to common mental health problems and how to conceptualise a problem using this model.

🔵 WHAT IS THE GESTALT CYCLE OF EXPERIENCE?
The cycle of experience is basically a map for how you become aware of a need, meet that need, and achieve satisfaction. Most people are stuck within a cycle and this can cause all sort of problems from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions and so forth. Each full cycle has eight stages: sensation, recognition, mobilisation, action, contact, satisfaction, withdrawal and the fertile void.
Let’s look at how the cycle of experience can be used with a counselling psychology client. Margaret is a high achiever, she has completed a phd in economics and has a very well paid job. She successfully completes many difficult tasks but she is unable to gain a sense of satisfaction. She never feels good enough and she is constantly critiquing her performance. Margaret has an interruption in her cycle of experience between contact and satisfaction. She experiences an internal pressure to rush a task and move on to the next task. She never achieves the satisfaction and withdrawal phases and never leaves a space for the void. This leaves Margaret feeling very anxious, she has difficulty sleeping and experiences critical self-talk.
Each full cycle is called a ‘gestalt’ and Margaret has many cycles going on at the same time each taking up psychological space. She has several work projects on the go, she is still grieving the death of her mother from two years ago, and often thinks about the bullying she experienced as school. As a therapist it can be very helpful to identify exactly where the cycle is interrupted as this will provide direction to the psychological therapy sessions.

I'm in education to become a Gestalt therapist, and this is the clearest explanation of Gestalt cycle I've heard so far! Your other videos are also very clear. You definitely have a knack for explaining things in an simple to understand way (which is not easy to do)... Great work and very helpful!

this has got to be (one model/description of) the foundation of the embodied experience. It's a shame more people don't want to talk about it

It certainly is the foundation of embodied experience. I will be working on more gestalt videos soon. Thanks for your support and best wishes, Teresa.

I do, I do, I am currently on a quest for meaning. Disappointing I can’t connect, I would absolutely love to discuss ideas. Can we discuss philosophy and other disciplines as well as models in psychology and how they relate to human behavior and ourselves?

I would like to hear about excessive contact with each state in the cycle of expiriance, not only disturbance or block. For example: if someone is too much in sensation state, or too much in awareness, too much in action, too much in mobilization and so on. Because for me block shows only one part of the polarity in each state and to close my gestalt cycle of experience about this topic I need the other polarity as well 😉 And if I take my own example: I am with contact with this topic now and block my self to proceed, because I need more information to make sense for me and I stay in too much contact. Or probability this is new cycle, because I first enjoyed it and than emerged my curiosity about excessive contact, I become aware of it, mobilized, took action to write a comment to gather more information and I will withdrawal until I have a response. Wow it is pretty cool noticing it everywhere.

Thanks for your comment. Excessive contact in a specific state can in itself cause one to become stuck within that state. In summary the excessive contact can in itself cause the block. I hope this answers your question. Best wishes, Teresa.
