With the help of The Fifth, I'm going to show you why we don't need girl stuff and guy stuff. It can just be stuff! Check out their site and see what I mean!
www.thefifthwat...
Why is it that every product needs to be gendered? Seriously. Men and women have their own soaps, lotions, snack foods, razors, deodorants, channels...and for what? Not only can these stereotypes be offensive and insulting to men and women, but they can alienate anyone who doesn't fit comfortably into this male/female binary we've constructed. And when you think about how arbitrary this construct is, it seems silly that so many feel the need to cling to all this gendered marketing. That's why I decided to team up with The Fifth to show you how it's possible for us to move past gender roles and just let people consume stuff based on their preferences. Sure, it's just a watch, but progress has to start somewhere, right?

+Sprinkleofwilly funny thing is that a lot of junior sized jeans, jeggings and even joggers can fit a slender male very well. they should oficially be unisex. and i'm tired of that mind set that it's considered cross dressing. maybe if you go out as a sexy momma head to toes lol! but seriously, pants are pants, dude. men's pants are never going to be 'tight' enough' unless you get them in asia.

it's kind of funny because mens pants have larger, more practical pockets while women's pants have pockets that can literally hold nothing but chapstick and post it notes. often times the fabrics used for mens clothing are also thicker and warmer. its wild.

This video is totally accurate! I hate when people say that boys cannot wear pink and when parents try to tell kids that they need a certain color because they are a boy or a girl! Colors have no gender. They are just colors. We need to stop putting labels on things and just let them be!

I was in a mall once and a guy tapped my shoulder on the escalator and asked why I'm wearing pink socks and am I a women. My mind couldn't even answer, I didn't even think when putting them on, it's just a bloody colour. Then I got called a gayboy and he spat on me. The human race can be lovely at times lol. But.....I still rock the pink socks because I can!! :D great video RJ. X much love ❤️

+Joshuaaaaaawy I'm sorry you had that bad experience with that stupid man. Quite a few straight men were wearing pink shirts for work on casual Fridays in the '80s. When asked why, many replied their wives or GFs dig the colour so as not to sound gay. Frankly, they were getting tired of white, grey, and blue.

This video is everything!! I was gonna buy a new water bottle because mine crapped out on me the other day. I just wanted a normal freaking water bottle to contain my water with lemon when I need it. There was two bottles, one was pink and said something in the lines off "even though I'm a princess, I can also lift" and then there was a black one which said like "train insane or remain the same" and it was so masculine it almost made me puke. Since pink is not really my color, I ended up with the black one. But this is so annoying! And it is EVERYWHERE. God help me if they can't make anything gender neutral. Also, you're hilarious and this video made me very passionate, but it also made me giggle :D

+Anette Bøhler Prydz what about all those women's tank top or tee shirts that says 'sexy' or those 'apple bottom' jeans? i'm sure there's times when women just want to wear comfy clothes that are 'plain' looking at times.

Anonimato Vato I have a confession to make regarding that. I shop at the "men's" section and pretend to have a boyfriend, when I in real life have a girlfriend and love to wear what society sees as men's sweatpants. I can't stand that so many toys are gender based. I've never imposed gender based toys on my daughter and she likes her Thomas the trains just as much as her barbies and marvel superhero figurines. I have to say it did irritate me when she took her minecraft figurines to school for show and tell last year, and came home telling me that boys and girls were telling her that minecraft was only for boys and she couldn't play with them and she was 6 at the time.

And my daughter was doing science experiments and at the end when we got there, the guy who was an engineering professor from a college was telling the kids about careers in engineering and he mentioned how they always need more girls in careers like that and a few parents were saying I would never encourage my girl to go into a career made for a man. It was truly shocking and disappointing.
@tristanemmett4560
@tristanemmett4560 8 лет назад
+Amanda King Careers "made for men"? There are so many engineers who state flat out that having female coworkers is really beneficial to their company because women tend to be better at multitasking and approach situations from a different perspective. These parents are obviously stuck a few decades back. It's people like them that are the reason so many girls don't think they're capable of succeeding in STEM fields.

Great, now I hate society even more. I knew it was serious but not this much. It would maybe be bearable if it at least wasn't as extreme as it is. Although my mom loves me the way I am she would always say that the way I dress is weird because it's neither boyish nor girly and that when it comes to clothes I should just pick one side and not try to be something in between because it looks weird and she'd always be like ''look at other girls...'' to which I always responded ''I'm not other girls''. This just always bothered me. The gender roles are way too much. But on the other hand, it used to be worse, maybe you're considered weird but now you're at least allowed to wear or like what you want. I'll keep hoping it will get even better in the future. Loved the video by the way. How the hell do you do this? You're so great!

beautiful beautiful point and video. I was literally just confronted with this. So my brother, who's 6, liked my black nail polish and wanted some for himself. I ended up painted his thumb with a temporary paint because if my mom or my step dad(his dad) found out they would flip their shit. Also he wants his hair to be red but my mom wont let me help him with that because dyeing hair red is for girls apparently. I'm gonna get him some temporary red color and make sure its extra dark and 'manly' so everyone can get what they want. I don't want him to grow up feeling ashamed of liking certain things just because of Gender roles. This whole subject just frustrates me to a crazy point because I can't do anything about it oml

I something online about the whole target getting rid of its gender separation thing I don't remember exactly what they said but it was basically " "how can I possibly get a gift for my granddaughter, nephew etc. if I don't know what things are for boys or for girls" well here's an idea how about you actually get to know the kid you giveing a present to instead of just giving them something arbitrary based on their gender." I would add to that that if you're going to the party of the kid you don't know very well, first off why do people invite children their kids barely know to their birthday parties, and second buy the kid something like a board game or a book, it's that god damn simple.

As I girl, I've hardly ever shopped in the juniors department. I don't want studded jeans, sparkly bows, flirty t-shirts, girly stuff written all over it, or the face of a pop star on it. I prefer the women's(classier than juniors) and guy's(pretty cool) department. Picked out my basketball pants standing right next to bodybuilder guy. haha And camo - all girl's camo practically has pink. I'm not gonna buy from sections that don't satisfy me. YESS Best video I love your videos RJ! Something I want to say, I usually go for womens items because usually they are designed for the women's body, and its easier to find them if they're labeled pink. Also I like having feminine items for aethestic purposes. However, I think we shouldn't be saying 'for women' if something is feminine, only if its specifically for womens bodies. The hammer was hilarious. The worst thing is men though with the whole pink thing. And the treatment of pink in general. I've gotten comments because of pink things before, even though I'm a girl. I'm a graphic designer and I designed a cosmetic brand for women and made it all pink (lol im sorry Im the kind of person you all hate :P but i gave it a 'princess' theme for young girls who like that) and when an interviewer looked through my portfolio, they said 'thats very pink....' as if it were a negative thing. Like I wasn't a good designer because I designed something very girly therefore not professional. I keep it in my portfolio because of this, since I don't want to be hired by someone who thinks less of me for designing 'girly' items. (But from now on I'll try to avoid designing products stereotypically 'for women' if I can hehe) I want to see men wearing pink MUCH more often.

I feel this video so much. My little brother has always been interested in dolls and hair and the color pink and typically feminine things, and you would NOT BELIEVE how uncomfortable people, some of whom are complete strangers, get. My dad was so horrified at first, being a typical Southern camo-wearing, deer-hunting "Real Man" but in the past few years, he's realized how ridiculous and unnecessary his behavior was. Hyper-masculinity is something we REALLY need to combat in this country. I mean, honestly? Grown men telling my 11 year old brother he's just asking to be beaten up when he goes trick or treating as Zelda? Telling him you're gonna "rough him up" if his daddy doesn't for the way he's dressing and acting? Hearing this type of shit from his uncles and cousins is bad enough... why do gross old men feel SUCH a need to assert their idea of masculinity by scaring and humiliating little boys?

Would totally love to have that watch rj its stylish as hell. I been though the whole " stuff " thing even since I came out as a lesbian I always get stare at in the men and woman clothing area because of my choice in clothing. Its frustrating to think that people can assume that okay because your girl you shop in the female area but if you are boy you shop in the male area it more annoying when they say that directly to me I do tell the person/people that I am girl and I don't think clothing should have a gender I am free to wear what ever make me happy and comfortable. Let's just say every time I go into shops I give people an understanding of judgement towards others because of who people are. Love ya rj and thanks for making this video it's me so happy :)

"because clearly women don't know anything about tools unless their painted pink" - rj *flashback to 6th grade* *remembers stem class* *remembers bending the nail* "yup, it wasn't pink so i don't know how to nail it in without it being pink" -this was a joke please don't kill me- i love this video though the stereotypes of where men have to take more masculine colors such as blue and black with women having to take such delicate colors like pink of purple are so stupid. my favorite color is black yet even though it can be a universal color(ish) sometimes you'll see black products meant for maLES while females have pink which is a color i don't prefer. aka the pencils for her. like they're cool and all but where's the black one. -whoops i agree with rj just too much for normalness- but RJ, you are an amazing person you express your opinions without too much hate and you definitely stand up from other youtubers. This is literally why you and Will are my favessss

I work in a kids toy store and a woman came in, looking for a Marvel toy for a grandchild. She asked to see the Hulk toys so I show her them and she like looks weird at them and then said 'Sorry I just feel weird right now.' And of course I ask why, you know thinking she wasn't too sure about the toy but no she said, 'it's for a girl. I mean she likes the Hulk that's not girly is it?' And I'm holding back because she is a paying customer but WHAT?! That little girl can like whatever she wants! Down with gender roles, kids can just be kids man who cares what they like?!

I have yet to find a watch sized appropriately for my slender wrists without it being painfully (excruciatingly so) marketed toward the concept of "Feminine". Watches marketed toward men are all too large; I put one on and suddenly I look like a 5-year old who put on his father's watch. Watches marked toward women all seem to push fashion over function. Thin dangly chains, ridiculously small watch faces ... and an endless sea of pastels. Hell... even the watch in this video is too large for my wrists :-/

(I hope you see this rj ❤️) I think that is is Guys watch typically but I think that dividing things by gender is stupid!!! I like blue and red not pink and yellow!! A gender isn't make you, you!!!! I got bullied cuz I was "different" cuz I liked playing football and I liked blue instead of pink!!! I'm not a transgender or anything like that I'm just a girl who likes boy things, but I also like makeup and stuff!! I didn't really like playing with Barbie dolls I liked playing with tractors and diggers when I was younger!!!! Thank you for making this video R.j you have really made my day!! I am so glad that you understand the same as hopefully the majority of the world!!! Btw I think that u and will are so cute together and I wish you all the best in the future (ps. I love these kinds of videos so much. I don't fit into the gender binary, but because of family members' unwillingness to understand and the general population's automatic rejection of people like me, I felt really forced to assimilate and "pick a side." My solution is to just buy from both the men's and women's departments to make myself feel better, but how cool would it be if every store was like The Fifth and separated items based on style, color, or *gasp* function, instead of some weirdly constructed system that doesn't even make sense and paints one gender as the fragile one in need of softer products and the other as masculine and rock solid when, in reality, a lot of people grow up not fitting into those roles and feel alienated because of it! Great video RJ, thanks for making people like me feel more understood 😊

As I get older I realize how much I love my parents for teaching me at a young age that gendered products are silly by buying me and my siblings whatever we wanted or liked (within reason) opposed to by gender. Also blaze orange/pink cammo is the silliest gendered product I've seen.

As a unisex person, this kinda means somthing to me. Gendered products have always made me feel anxious, especially when I was a kid and trying to be a girl like I was supposed to and not really knowing how. These days I care a little less, but I still gravatate towards non gender specific things whenever I can get away with it.

In France, there was the first Twingo that, unlike the newest models, was sold only in France. It was a huge success that never seemed to wither away so no reason to stop it. HOWEVER, when the CEO of Renault found that "that women were the majority of buyers for this car" because they found it cute and practical, they decided it had to be redesign it to make it more manly, bulkier because it was insulting for Renault to have made a car men would shun. They said Renault is not here to make "shopping cars". They do make wanking cars, though...

It's actually crazy how gendered everything is. I work as a swimming teacher for kids, mostly preschoolers, and from the word go they are dressed in pink or in superhero swimming costumes, want to be a princess or a superhero. The little girls I teach are often really surprised that they can be a superhero too. I love superheroes and love giving the girls a list of characters they can be; learning that there is a superhero called Supergirl is very exciting for them. At my swim school I'm also the only teacher to offer any colour options to both boys and girls. It annoys me that even at 2 and a half boys and girls will have been socialised to think they can't choose something or can't be something because of their gender/sex.

It's also really bad because I am a female (both as sex and gender) and a lot of times I have to buy from the "men's" section in clothing because the "women's" comes in sizes that are cut for incredibly small people because that's how its perceived that women should be. Also the clothes I like are band shirts and anime shirts and generally the better ones are ones that are made "for men"

Thanks. I love the info about the watches and completely agree with you on how stuff is branded. I guess my comment isn't so much about misadvertising(it's a sticker or flyer, I don't freaking care what it says). I'm often frustrated by comments from friends who think I'm not being ladylike, appropriate, patient enough with my girlfriends or whatever. I am confident in myself as a female; I just have nontraditional interests that are tomboyish, or sometimes closely line up with dudes.I bound up two or three stairs at a time, I'd rather play sports with guys who are totally into the game, talk about hunting, weightlifting, and the history of different wars with guys than waste time doing hair and nails with girlfriends. I literally have anxiety attacks on makeup aisles, and hate glittery pink stuff. When I'm in a Bass Pro Shops or Military Surplus store, I feel great. I love my running shoes are from the men's department and I wear my brother's hand-me-downs. When I wear my favorite camo cargo pants, I get comments like - "Oh that's cute. What made you decide to play dress up today?" Any of my guy friends who wear the same pants don't get such comments, they are accepted for what they wear. I say if it's not immoral, illegal, or harmful - then go do what makes your soul feel alive. I prefer babysitting boys, I asked for Legos for my 17th birthday, I love training martial arts with military friends, and I wish to join the National Guard. Why do people in my life freaking have problems with stuff like that? For years I felt like I didn't fit in(cuz I don't have any girl friends to relate to on this type of thing). I'm not confused about my gender, or trying to get attention by being "weird". I'm trying to be me, but often I feel negativity or apprehension from others. I like me, even if girls didn't invite me over to their birthday party, and some guys are intimidated by me apparently. People think I'm awesome when I'm just being myself, or are slightly freaked out by me. I will not continue to try to be "normal" though... because whenever I've tried, I suffocated myself, suppressed my desires, and it was psychologically unhealthy for me. I prefer practicality over cutesy. Cargo pants hold a lot more than the pockets of any girl's pants, a back pack is more convenient than a purse, and a multi-tool is something I almost always have with me. And with my pixie, and often unintentional gender neutral dressing, I've been mistaken for a guy multiple times. That doesn't bother me, because I recognize that people associate gender roles with clothing and mannerisms all the freaking time. There is no reason for me to be mad when I'm asked if I'm a guy. I feel it's more important that I be caring and loving of others, than to take extra time to make sure I look feminine before I go out.

Answer: I do not think it should matter. I know for me, especially when it comes to accessories, if I like something I will most likely buy it. The "normal" and "preassigned" gender of an object does not matter to me; those watches are honestly stunningly gorgeous and I will probably buy one for myself because ... well, I have no self control.

My friend once told me that as a woman she refuses to help with renovation work in her house. She told me "it's just not a woman's place". I was dumbfounded...because I actually enjoy renovating and redoing and repainting my room with my dad...yet I am pretty sure I'm a woman. I think that mindset definitely comes from society but it's probably one of the most stupid things I've ever heard her say U.u

I agree with most of what you say, getting rid of theses things is good, but some medical stuff there is stuff that is only good for men or women. For example vitamins, women's vitamins have way too much iron for men. However this would require a lot to change and can't happen over night. Also just say even if it says for women or for men you can still just but it. I have bought stuff that says for women on it before and I do not care, or stuff that says for men it does not mean anything to me and to me, and in some ways we should not care what it says, but I still get your point and agree that we should not do for everything you stated. I think some of the over top stuff you showed is more of just a joke anyways, but I still see your point and think that a lot of it like watches, toys, and the sunscreen stuff is just stupid to label that, but I think they just do that because it catches your attention and some of it is just not to be taken literally. I mean they are trying to sell you stuff. Overall I think the big things is to get rid of the color for guys and the colors for girls thing, and stop caring what kind of color they like wether it is cleshay for their gender. For example telling a girl that they should not like pink because of the cleshay of girls liking that color. Also like kids play with any toys they want and not say boy or girl toys, when I was younger I played with my with my sister's barbie dolls sometimes and my race cars or my weenie the pooh doll or my gi joe action figures. Playing with toys does not mean anything more than just having some fun. Now again I still do not fully understand why is so bad to name something different? Personally, I still find it stupid but it does get more guys or girls doing theses things that they would not of done 20 - 40 years ago because they are for girls or guys. Now again I do think is stupid but it is a least a step in the right direction and getting more guys or girls to do things that they would be afraid of looking less manly or less girly. I personally think we should encourage them just to call it what it is and try to get them not to care about it. Witch I think will eventually happen and this may just be a necessary step for older guys and gals that were just raise a certain way to get over it. Or, as I said earlier they just might just be a joke to them to call every thing bro whatever, like a meme kinda. Anyways I like your videos and this was an interesting topic to write about.
