My Nissan Pathfinder is stuck in snow 5 miles up the mountain! In this video I take my 1992 Ford Bronco with a brand new set of Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires up the trail. Things got rough with all the snow and mud. Be sure to subscribe and keep up with all the builds and more review videos.

Hey my friend, I stumbled on this video while researching tires for my ‘17 f250 PowerStroke. I realized right away we are from the same area. I grew up in Homewood on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, so I know how difficult it can be to get a vehicle around in Sierra cement! Lol I am now living in Reno so I’m not dealing with 3 foot berms every morning anymore, but I appreciate your video and enjoyed going on this journey with you in familiar territory.

@Rory McCorny Yeah, kinda. I think I might have thrown out a few prayers too 😂. I didn't have much of a choice, It was the only 4x4 I had left. We bought a Ram Rebel recently and it came with these tires from the factory. World of a difference on that truck. In dirt, mud, and snow, these are awesome. But I will say that they are a little slippery on ice. Driving around town on snow and ice, they get a little slick. But they are not dedicated snow tires, so it's expected. Thanks for the comment, and the Ford is feeling better now too. 👍

No tire can perform on ice, it is a case of chain up the wheel or studded tire, I live in canada it all depends on the snow condition, watery snow what people call slush is the worst again you need chain or stud
@autovice

You point out all the ice under the snow and then dog the tire because it didn't go up as well, was there the same amount of ice under the snow when you went up with the Pathfinder?
@autovice
@autovice 4 года назад
@ charlie dee Conditions were different for sure. So it's not a fair side by side comparison for that and a lot of other reasons honestly. When I took the pathfinder up it was a lot more wet and muddy at the bottom of the hill. There was a storm coming in and it got us when we got to the top. It was freezing cold and supper slick. We still got pretty far but eventually it was too much. I did run both in 2wd as much as I could though and I feel like the pathfinder still came out ahead, slightly. I guess I was just surprised. Just looking at both rigs side by side. I would have put my money on a lifted full size Bronco on 35 inch Duratracts over a bone stock Pathfinder with mild looking Geolanders. I'm gonna do some update videos soon though. Thanks for watching!

@@autovice I got ya. I have noticed a narrow tire on my 04 Grand Cherokee does better in the snow then a wider one. A 255/75-17 works real good, better than the 265's I had on it previously. That could be why the Pathfinder seemingly went further.
@autovice
@autovice 4 года назад
@charlie dee That makes sense. A few people have mentioned the advantage of a thinner tire in the snow. I'll have a chance to play with the Duratracs on a new truck though! We just got a 2019 Ram Rebel! and it came with them from the factory. I'll be dropping the intro video tomorrow!😀

Here in Finland we drive much worse roads with more snow during the winter no problem, with 2wd cars... but then again, we do need to use (by law) dedicated winter tires (either with or without studs) and they make all the difference. I'm planning to get these Duratracs for my Jeep, but will change to my winter tires when it is time, since I don't wanna be stuck anywhere :D Nobody really considers these all season tires as proper winter tires anyway here. If you ever get chance to test proper winter tires (like Nokia Hakkapeliitta for example) you'll see what I mean. Night and day that difference :)
@autovice
@autovice 3 года назад
@Finnish Fatman Thanks for the info. I'm sure you get some serious snow up in Finland. Our weather here is so inconsistent. It'll snow then warm up and melt. Then refreeze at night and snow again. So it leaves us with a nice sheet of ice to play with. The tires are good. I think it was just a combination of conditions, an old rig, and user error, LOL. I've never driven on dedicated winter tires. I might have to make that a goal. Thanks again! Have fun with the Jeep!
@finnishfatman
@finnishfatman 3 года назад
@@autovice No doubt you would've made it if your driveline was working properly. But yeah, even when some winters are less snowy, it's nice to have that feeling which you get with winter tires. All the mushy snow and ice really becomes no problem with them. Could kinda compare it like trying to plow through mud with street slicks vs good MTs 😁 And with 2 sets of tires you can make them last so long, they usually start to disintegrate because of old age and not so much because the tread pattern is too worn. I personally prefer studded winter tires because the jeep is heavier than normal cars and in the corners those friction winter tires won't bite into ice. They're awesome in snow, but on ice studs are pretty much only thing I like to rely on. My wife drives Hyundai i40 wagon with friction tires and it can corner much better when there's some snow, but usually we drive my jeep if it's knee deep snow or polished ice (and because jeeps are more fun to drive than i40 😆). If you do get good winter tires, I can throw some sorta bet you'd absolutely love them. Studded ones and you can drive around all kinds of winter conditions 👌

@autovice
@autovice 4 года назад
@Nathan Seeley You are right. Its not a fair comparison. I think i mentioned it in the bronco video but maybe i needed to be more clear. The 2 rigs are entirely different but its all i had at the time. I did however run them both on 2wd as far as i could until i had to go into 4wd. I felt the the geolander pathfinder combo did better. But weight and different conditions played a big role i think. I do plan on doing follow up videos on both though, to get a better idea, and fix that old bronco. I kinda want the lighter of the tires for less unsprung weight to turn even though 6lbs is not that much. I was going to try 285/70R18(33.7 inches) but only Nitto has them in that size and Nitto ridge grapplers are heavier than just about everything. I plan to put on a 285/75R18(34.8-35inch) which in cooper and duratrac are lighter than Nittos smaller tires. Trying to keep some type of fuel mileage when I do it as Tundra's don't get the best MPG anyway.

Skinnies are the way to go in my experience, also rally cars in Europe use really skinny tyres on the snow stages. 🇬🇧 stay safe.

Need some help please with this kind of tires for 2014 nissan titan pro 4x I checked two places sam's club and Goodyear store and they have this tire in two different models 125Q and 125R (speed rating) 125Q is for 96 mph and 125R for 106 mph I like to hear from people use this kind of tires I'm planning to use this tires at Colorado State most in Denver area not in the montains and I'm not planning to use to pull or carry heavy weight but I may use one day to pull something or carry something heavy maybe occasionally but most just drive in the city truck only have 21000 miles just not drive to much, but I'm confuse to chose the right tire 125Q is slow and 125R is faster please make comments on this issue thank you..

@mike pulcine I had 4WD to start. It stopped engaging at some point on the mountain early on. All we got was a ticking sound coming from behind the dash. The 4WD light was on but nobody was home. But hey! you gotta do what you gotta do! right? Anyway, the Pathfinder was fine, I think because no one else was up there, and all the fresh snow kept it covered then melted off. It was almost spotless when we found it!

overall those tires are not really made for winter driving as it claims to be..
@autovice
@autovice Год назад
@benzlee8538 I agree. Although I ran into problems with my 4WD, the tires just seem to get very slick. I think the rubber compound just gets too stiff in cold weather. But that's just my opinion. I do have the same tires on my Ram Rebel. From the factory and so far they have 41K miles and are holding up great. So that's nice.

How would you expect a one wheel wonder to get anywhere on that surface? Not really a test of the tire. I live in Canada and I would get up there first try with front and rear lockers, speed, and maintained momentum. That’s literally nothing to be honest.
