Don't understand why GoPro et al still doesn't do time and date stamps like Garmin has always done. Love the GoPro App tho and I think a further discussion of the Max versus the 8 in App would make for a superior review.

Quick question, if I already own a Hero 7 black, which I dont feel the hero 8 is way different in performance, do you think I should still update to a Hero 8 or a Max would be fine considering is a lot more different than the hero 7 and and 8, in the sense of 360 reframing features.

Very comprehensive and interesting video. As a VR enthusiast I started watching 360° videos on Oculus/Vive giving me the feeling of „re-living“ the situations again. Kind of a history holo deck with your friends and family. I will definetly go for the max, overcoming many bugs the fusion had

As always, your reviews are above and beyond (especially the fast pace). I’m definitely ready to buy as a replacement for my Fusion but I definitely agree Nick and company misnamed it as a supposed “GoPro Max!” UGG, how about GoPro Fusion Plus which is really their true target audience.

Super great video. All the important info and a great pace with THE examples we’re looking for in every point made. Got the Max...wanted the 360, and loving it! Only need 1080 max (oops, pun!!) so really loving it, don’t have any other action cam. Instant sub and bell smash keep up the great work!!

Short answer is to buy both! (and I’m sure this is what GoPro intended) Max doesn’t replace Hero8. There is no 360 cam on the market that can keep up, but there are a tonne of new and unique use cases for 360 cameras that make them special in their own way. I’m glad to see the Fusion has come of age. Great review

Great review. As a videographer I find the max as the better choice, being able to reframe later is an insanely cool perk. The ability to combine hyperlapse with slow motion and reframing later has some really neat tricks, for which the insta 360x became famous for. However even though I may personally prefer the max over the 8, I still think the 8 is the right choice for most people. For extreme sports anyways. For vlogs maybe cell phones are their best choice now and skip the extra cameras all together. For 360 video as much as I like what I’m seeing and hearing about the max vs the previous fusion, I’m still going to wait for the new insta 360 coming out and see how it compares against them. Bc the 360x kicked the fusions butt in so many ways. Now it looks like the max fixed most of the fusions issues but still want to wait and see just in case.

Well, I have the Hero 7 Black and love it. You helped make my decision on a 360 camera . I will probably go for the Insta 360 One X or a newer version if one comes out soon. I don’t get GoPro’s thought process on designs..crazy! Thanks

Yes that would be good, got to send my one r back for refund. Using the fastest card (v60) I can afford and it still cooks it self. Real shame, I haven't seen many moans about the max regarding heat issues, may be because of the lower bit rate?

As usual a great review with the information delivered concisely at the perfect speed, I've just purchased the max as I have a Hero 7 and want to add an extra dimension to our VLOGS. If I didn't already have the Hero 7 then I agree, best to go for the Hero 8

Thanks for this review. I need a camera for overcapture when I travel. Already have a Sony FDR 3000X which is best for mounting on my motorcycle helmet (good stabilisation and also 3.5mm jack for direct microphone), but GoPro Max can give me a few angles more besides what I can get on the Sony. Hero mode is good for filming in museums or in towns. Initially I wanted to go with Insta One X but that's not water proof. Will see after the holidays. Thank you again for helping me make a decision.

I use a Fusion with my motovlogging, but it's my B-cam mounted on a motorcycle selfie-stick, and my Hero 6 Black is my A-cam mounted on my helmet. I like the features of both the Hero 8 Black and the Max so, if/when either of my current cameras die, I'll have good replacements available. Thank you for all the info you've provided :)

Thanks for really good review. I consider to by Max, now. It is usefull for recording family/friends meetings, where people are close one to another. In this case you need not to turn camera around non stop, but you can keep camera on pod, motionless, and later, you can do video cropping/procesding. Similar on bicycle: gopro max could be sticked to bicycle handlebar. And later, during prcesing, you can easily change frame/view, from road, to yourself while sitting on bicycle.

As a Scuba Diver, I would have looooved to see an underwater housing for the Max (I've seen a video of the Fusion with a prototype that had the patent bought by GoPro. So hopefully one day...). But since the GoPro 8 Black has everything for me, I'll go with it while I wait for an update of the Max. Thanks a lot for this review!

This is best refined comparison of the two gopro I have seen. Details and yet bullet points, which makes me very easy to see the two cameras difference and what they are purposed for. As an experienced gopro user, I simply anxious about getting to know what is the feature making the Max so cool, not the sample 360 degree immersed demo video. Thus I can decide if I put my money on it to get one. Your video is well made exactly on the point. thank you!

Great video - thank you :-). I was set on getting the Hero8 Black but then got the Max for my birthday. It is exchangeable, but having researched it a lot, I'm going to stick with the Max. However - there are a lot of extra accessories that GoPro do for the 8 which are not yet available for the Max. You mentioned the case in the video, I was also thinking about the media mod kit to allow an external mic - do you know if they have any plans to release this for the Max? Also - are there any 3rd party accessory kits that you would recommend? I've looked on Amazon and there's a lot of cheap rubbish out there..

Yup. Check out the comparison video linked above, and then in that you'll find a Google Drive share. There's the original/RAW files, but those require transcoding (and GoPro hasn't publicly released that app yet - any day). So I'm uploading as we speak some ProRes files, but at 30-60GB a pop, it's taking a bit of time. Says a few hours left, but they'll be up there sooner or later.

Yup, you can keyframe in both. In fact in the video I also show a bit of keyframing momentarily when I export it out and show the settings for export. Identical keyframing experience, just different controls (keyboard commands & mouse, vs touch).

Good review. I think your addendum at the end is really important to point out, and to rephrase it, GoPro was attempting to make the next generation camera from the Hero 8, but these are really for two separate markets. In my case I want to edit camera angles post production; I'm using the camera for interviews and can cut back and forth easily between myself and my guest w/o the need for multiple cameras. I should have a few episodes released soon on this idea. But in the end the two cameras are so different it's not really possible to say they are being marketed to the same niche

This is an amazing video. I'm an automotive videographer and the Hero Max lets me reframe to angles I want. Granted, the imaging isn't sharp when you zoom in, you can adjust brightness and contrast in any editor of your choosing.

Currently on a Hero5 and Hero6 and I use them mainly when travelling off-road on my motorbike. One is facing forward on my helmet, the other one stationary on pointing back. The big problem being that I cannot really plan when something interesting happens, so you need to film both angles (to keep down the footage and reduce battery usage, I have both cameras connected to GoPro's Smart Remote). For this use case, the Max seems to be perfect, except for technical limitation (frame rate and resolution) and the fact that it isn't compatible with the Smart Remote (really?!). Are the Hero's batteries compatible with the Max? Or do I have to sell everything and start from scratch? The other option is to buy 2 Hero 8s ...
