Last few sets of batteries I've used in this guitar tuner have leaked. These include Duracell & GP Ultra batteries. Funny thing is.. It's always the same battery in the tray that leaks, every time.

Well zinc carbon batteries usually leak-free, are quite cheap and good for that low current application

Use white vinegar to clear off the corrosion damage, it does a good job.

I've seen leaking cells only in devices where they draw little standby current. Namely a blood pressure monitor where the LCD is permanently turned on and a Korg CA-50 tuner are the ones I remember. Different brands. Never seen leaking batteries in my multimeters or clocks.

Hi, I was thinking perhaps along the same lines regarding low standby current, and yes it's a possibility, but nano amps seem a bit too low for this from AAA batts. I guess anything is possible though. Cheers John

Duracell batteries are known to be prone to leaking (it’s happened to me far too many times), so having batteries made in the same factory would make me steer clear of them.

They sure are Scott. I had to throw a DAB radio away about 8 years ago because of the mess Duracells had made inside it. The radio wasn't used that much but the batts had only been in for a couple of months. In that time they'd leaked (A lot) and not only rotted the battery contacts away into virtually nothing, but a load of the PCBs traces had been eaten away too. I hadn't learned any board/trace repair back then so it ended up in the bin :( Cheers Mate John

Oh i expected a high current draw when off, i have this odd idea that partly flat batterys tend to leak. If i owned that unit, i would use a seperate battery holder on wires to keep the evil batterys away from the tuner. And i would put the battery holder on a small saucer, they can leak but a saucer wont give a dam lol. John, it's your channel, so ignore the dam cheeky people moaning about videos.

Hi Harv.. Me too, I was expecting that perhaps it was one of those devices you see sometimes that uses almost the same amount of current when Off as when On. But no so. An external pack is a good idea my friend 👍 The folk I was mentioning in the vid weren't moaning Harv.. They were encouraging me.. Saying that they didn't mind what was on the bench for repair etc.. if I filmed it they'd still be interested. Perhaps I didn't put it over very well. rarely Cheers mate John

Interesting stuff! Got a Toolzone 6" calliper that eats button cells, they all end up puffed up and dead. Have to take the battery out when its in storage.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
I think most of the cheaper calipers are the same mate, as mine do the same. Saying that though I've got a set of rather expensive Mitutoyo micrometers that aren't much better. If the batteries are left in by mistake they only last a month or so. Cheers John

Nearly wrecked my Fluke 28 with some standard Duracells. I wish there were some AAs that were guaranteed leak free.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
That's not good Steve. I used to trust duracell too, however they're rock bottom It seems these days. A guaranteed leak free cell would be great 👌

Is the tumer sitting on its bottom edge on a warm surface? This could cause the bottom cell to be subjected to higher temps (than the top cell) causing premature failure? Just a thought. I too have sworn off Duracell because of their tendancy to leak, esp in the warm temps in northern Oz. Varta are my value for money choice now, and no leaky ones so far this year. Thanx for the vid.

Hi Brian. That was what I initially considered, but unfortunately not. The tuner is just sat on a couple of rubber buttons that have low power LED's underneath them. I tested the temperature of the buttons with the thermal imager just in case they were warm/hot, but they were no warmer than ambient room temp. I've used Varta batteries before too and they were fine. I just seemed to settle on the GP Ultra brand and as mentioned in the video this is the only device I've ever had them in that have leaked. Cheers John

@@cyberwiccan359 Agreed.. Heat is a very common cause of accelerated battery degradation, & seal failure.

Hello John, very strange, two different brands, but always the battery in the lower position. A real head scratcher. Regards, Dave

Perhaps the bottom cell spring is a little too strong, giving the cell extra pressure and making it leak as it compresses the internal seal. Might try cutting a few turns off the spring to releive the pressure, or you just have been getting bad batches of cells.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Hi Sean, good idea there mate. However unfortunately the batteries seem to be under what I would consider the correct amount of spring tension really, for a decently made unit anyway. It certainly could be a bad batch but I tend to buy x100 cells every couple of months or so. So over say even a 3 month period I doubt that same batch would be an issue?.. I'm not sure how batches work in batt production though and over what period etc. I could just try a different brand again I guess Cheers buddy John

Dave Jones started to investigate what sets off the leakage, but no results yet. I have had it in wall clocks and other low drain devices. You obviously know the stuff tha comes out is alkali. After seeing elsewhere I use vinegar on a small brush to nutralise and dissove the white crystals, then after a water then alcohol clean I coat the contacts with WD40 and let that dry to try to provide a bit of protection for the next time. How have we gone backwards with batteries?!!
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Hi Mike.. Yes vinegar is very handy for this as a neutraliser, It's seems like an excellent cleaner most things. WD40 is a good idea 👍️ To be honest I just use a bit of switch cleaner, as the likes of Servisol Super 10 leaves a protective film too. Whenever batteries leak in anything I'm always just happy if the potassium hasn't rotted the terminals off :) Totally agree my friend, we've somehow definitely gone in reverse with batteries, or perhaps more like the quality of them. Cheers mate John
@MikeB_UK
@MikeB_UK 4 года назад
@@OrbiterElectronics Cheers John. Yes, your method is better than mine but my excuse is I don't usually have any switch cleaner. I don't remember most alkaline AA batteries leaking 20 years ago so something has gone backwards. I'd love to know the exact reason why. Rumour is they are now made to deliberately do this to increase sales of each manufacturers lithium version which is far less likely to leak and makes the manufacturer more profit.
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Nooo.. Both methods work just as well mate 👍 It's just that I tend to have more switch cleaner lying around than vinegar. Cheers John

Yes I think I saw that. Somewhere in that video she mentions about finding GP brand cells pretty good, in that they don't normally leak etc. Cheers John
