Nice review John. Looks quite handy for soldering on the go if you have a suitable power bank but I don't think these style are best suited to use in the lab.

Interesting to see that it works with a simple DC-DC Converter without using PD oder QC Protocol. That makes it way easier to DIY a power source for it!

Thank you. I also wanted to supply 12 volts directly, but I was afraid to burn the device. Your video helped me get rid of a lot of pd connection problems. Very useful video. thanks

Thats brilliant!! Ive spent weeks looking for usb-C sourcing module and haven’t been able to find anyone that make a usb-c sourcing module. I can find usb-c sinking modules everywhere though. I just received my ts80p a few hours ago. Its definitely not going to take the place of my hakko. But Im extremely impressed with the ts80p. Ive already Ralim’s firmware to more statistics and extend the temp range to 450. but even with the stock firmware I was impressed. The reason Im so excited to see you’ve find out that it will run off of 12 V directly is so I can power the ts80p with my Milwaukee drill batteries. I purchased wanna Milwaukee’s soldering iron‘s and it is a P.O.S. This ts80p runs circles around it, it more ergonomic, lighter and hotter. Im so glad you didn’t give up on that experiment when the display didn’t turn on!!

Hello John, seems like a handy little iron to have in your tool kit. You could run it off your vehicle battery. Regards, Dave

That’s interesting. Does the bigger tip help it retain heat better? Does it have changeable/different tips?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 4 года назад
Yes a larger tip will always retain more heat, I was quite surprised how well the standard one did. If you require anything other than standard tips. At present they're only available on the likes of eBay. However hopefully Banggood will restock on those too.

I just received this iron from banggood and am having trouble with it.Using the supplied power brick and usb-c cable. The iron will turn on and reach the heating/setting screen. As soon as I chose either option, the iron restarts and goes through the boot sequence again. Any advice?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 года назад
Hi, I can't say that I've heard of such an issue, so I can only really suggest perhaps checking all connections & trying a different usb cable. If you are able too you could also test that the power adapter is working as it should. Or try a different one thst can supply enough current. However you shouldn't have to do this with a new product, so alternatively I would just ask for refund or replacement.

By the way the original ta80 tips work with the ta80P

Yes it is a cute little iron, but i don't like small weedy connectors and cables for delivering power. I can't see it lasting. Small connectors held down to a pcb via solder only, never been a good idea for anything ;-( My favorite is the basic barrel connector, 19v laptop bricks do the job really well :-D. If i wanted a d.c iron, you tested those Tsing Grrseng or some daft name like that, small box controller and a 19v adapter type. That worked really well for generic stuff :-D Multimeters are always interesting, basic accuracy and a battery that last longer than drinking a cup of tea lol :-D. A four teabag rating is a minimal :-D

I can always rely on you for a chuckle Harv 🙂. I don't like the tiny connectors really either but IMO they do have their place, when it comes to portability anyway. Cheers friend John

I've never really trusted Banggood as being Chinese tat and the delivery in three months time. It's a weird name and everything seems to be in USD. At least with Amazon I get the item in a few days. I don't like the idea of their government having it's dabs all over it. I'm not sure about the security aspect of it all, the last thing I need to do is give my card number to the Chinese. Am I just being paranoid? Lol.

I didn't always buy stuff from BG as I thought in a similar manner. However after they started to sponsor my channel, I started buying stuff from them too, mainly consumables and basic tools, but it's stuff that I'm not in a rush for. I find that a lot of stuff now arrives within a couple of weeks or so, but there are items that still don't arrive for a month which is a tad annoying. Cheers John

They do have local warehouses for a lot of the more expensive stuff too. Often delivery is between only a few days and 2 weeks at the moment.

I buy from AliExpress many times since 2013, some orders came in 4/5 weeks, others (now because the virus) took 3 months from China. I never got an issue with any vendor until last week and will be the first time I'll try dispute a refund. From banggood I bought a KSGER T12 station and hot-air from same brand with help from John, the warehouse was CZ and 2 weeks later I got the package. I don't use my "real" credit card. I use a app to create a virtual VISA with X amount of money to buy stuff online. (Is almost like PayPal). If anyone steal my "virtual visa", only have access to the X quantity of money. Banggood have different types of currency's you can choose. Probably Amazon is safer and faster but the prices is higher.

@@ricardoavelar6270 I have heard of Virtual debit cards. It was mentioned on a tech guy's YT channel called TheoJoe. He's in North America though and I'm a Brit living in Spain. Thanks.
