Very cool machine, I'd love to see this running with an external monitor/keyboard (assuming it can do that) since the idea of having one tiny portable gaming system that can also be popped onto the desk and used for normal day-to-day productivity work is very interesting.
@@michaelbmw1931 Oculink is a port that passes through PCI-Express lanes to an external port. The port itself looks like a smaller DisplayPort jack (not mini-DisplayPort, and no, a DisplayPort cable won't fit). Unlike Thunderbolt: - There's no licensing fee from Intel or any other company - There's no other conversion stuff going on, for better and for worse, which means: - Not plug-and-play. So unplugging an Oculink cable with a live load on it is almost the same thing as pulling a PCI-Express card out while the system is powered on. You probably won't fry your motherboard, but your OS ain't gonna like it. So plug it in before you turn on your system, and unplug it AFTER you power down! - It doesn't carry power. So whatever's plugged into that Oculink cable will need its own power source. Since the most common use case is an external graphics card, you're going to need a power supply for it anyway. - No security--at least not to the degree that Thunderbolt has to prevent hacking attempts through PCI-Express. - At the same speeds when compared to Thunderbolt and USB4, it'll generally perform better.
@@michaelbmw1931 better version of thunderbolt with x2 bandwidth, but not popular, only on handheld device, on other device they sell a adapter switch call m2 nvme to oculink
Man GPD are going strong I heard there are some people having problems with after sales stuff, but they seemed to be focused on being a dedicated portable PC brand. I really hope they get things sorted. Part of me wants to start a collection with all there stuff but man I don't have that kind of money, lol
It’s the generation of AI slaves that are obeying every command. humans would have no need for basic mundane chores just slave ai to do it. Now let’s not talk about cloning because that’s just wrong and distasteful. X @gatesroyle
@@israelramirez0202 I guess you can personalize your AI experience and make it more family orientated but having an AI slave separates the emotional connection between you and the non-human slave.
@@Maximus20778 what the hell is persona sorry but I've never heard of it sounds old. I'm not old sir. I'm youthful. TT@fattohealthy. The best generation to be alive in besides the rising costs but hey we got awesome technology. I can't believe people used to dream about this stuff back in the day when I was born into it.
GPD made the first impressive portable console back in the day, as far as I remember. I remember it not quite being good enough for me to buy though, waited a few years and bam! Look at them now. Portable consoles are the most exciting part of gaming these days, how rapidly they're being improved is crazy. Imagine when self-learning AI plays a role in speeding up technological advancement, that's when things are REALLY gonna get crazy.
Honestly all thats left is to have an order of magniture in efficiency, ie total power consumption is sub 10w (and thats including the screen at max brightness and at full load) But not being power limited, the silicon itself needs to be that efficient. The current performance is fine, maybe closer to rx 6600 in performance but its the efficiency thats the issue. with a 40whr+ battery, that would mean 5-6 hours on a handheld, its basically a phone replacement lmao.
what I would love to see, is a high end video card tested in a desktop, and then over OCuLink, to see how much you lose from handheld. I know you have everything needed to make that happen. Please post a video on it :)
Looks pretty good. Would love to see you pop back to the ayaneo 2S and geek 1S to check their performance now that they e released the fast memory BIOS. And maybe a look at a few linux distros/ steamos alternatives now that theyve had some time to work on those distros
I really like this!! The price is a good deal for what is offered too in my opinion. So many handhelds are being released. I don't know which one to choose.😐
Different brands flip-flop in quality frequently too. GPD was making some weird moves with older models(having known issues and not doing much about them), now they're making a bit more effort to keep people happy. Aya Neo started with a solid model but recent models have shown an apparent degradation in quality.
Man if I was an onsite tech I’d be using one of these. At my work we hotdesk and WFH with a 13” laptop. Since we almost never use the built in displays for important work I’d rather have one of these in my bag.
GPD never fail to launch a product that goes straight into my wishlist, and this time with a lower size and price too! Currently own Pocket3 and using it for work and Win4 for personal use..but haven't use it much since it is performance-wise worse than my personal Desktop and the screen isn't 120hz so rthym game isn't that good on it, ended up occasionally play turn based game/ 2d rpg.
@@trakaiszeks really? Those two tell you about the malware? The deadzones? The square analog sticks? How about the failing SSDs? You’re insane if you think ETA and Phawx are comprehensive. They simply care about getting devices from GPD for their videos. They will never actually look out for you.
This is probably the UMPC with the smartest overall design out of the new generation. The only ergonomic improvement I can think of is switching the standard ANSI layout for a stripped down ISO layout that's a bit better centerd to reduce thumb strain while typing.
This would be my dream handheld gaming device, if not for one minor thing: Windows, or being more specific, the lack of quick suspend and quick resume feature, like we have it on the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, this is a big deal breaker for me, since I very often play my games in short sessions, which is only possible if I can quickly turn it off in the middle of the game, turn it back on when needed, and just continue playing. There's still hope with ChimeraOS, let's hope it will work well on the Mini.
I really, Really Want someone out there to Review a 7640 version of this, Due to its size I think that chip would be plenty, with Less heat, and probably more battery life.
Great to see all the mini handheld pcs hitting the market. AMD really own this market. Nvidia and Intel need to step up. This devices is not for me prefer my ally but definitely great idea and great to see more takes on designs.
This thing is just so cute 😭 I'm seriously considering selling my laptop and buying this to use as my main PC. The only thing that's concerning is the typing experience. I'd like to see and hear more about how comfortable it is to type on.
Running full windows on a 3DS-like device that you can dock for full desktop PC performance... The future is now old man... If (or when) I can buy one, I would love to make a "slot in" kind of dock, with added cooling and the like. Quite literally a gaming PC in your pocket.
This looks cool. My only issue is that GPD seems to drop support for their products pretty quickly. But maybe that has changed since my purchase of the GPD MicroPC a few years ago.
They're all like that. Most handheld console manufacturers want to sell their product and have the customer move on to the next version within a year or two.
Pretty much the only PC handheld with actual long term support thus far has been the steam deck. Sure these and the ones from Asus and kther manufacturers are cool but you pretty much have to look at them like youre buying a low powered gaming laptop with little support after launch. The steam deck is more of a console like expirence and steam is actually insentivised to support it because the longer they support it the more people will buy games on their store to play on it.
@@GhostAcez they aren’t really any more motivated than anyone else, they get the money from the games purchased either way. Buy a gpd mini? Buy Steam games. Buy an Asus whatever it is? Buy Steam games. Steam gets the sales regardless.
Obviously it will help them perform better. But tbh stuff like dlss, fsr and what not are like a cheap way for company’s to boast about their framerates. It’s more impressing to see the raw performance
9:34. Look at the frame rate. Barely changing. And just looking at it. Excellent frame times. Pretty good consistency. I mean that seems to be a real benefit for APUs. Their architecture it's is designed for such close quarters operation. You really do get better throughput. On average with an APU. That's also what's so good about X3D chips. But the fact that they include oculink. That's a feature rather than an option. Makes me excited to see its performance. And the controls. Chefs kiss. 👌 Symmetrical and hall sensor. The only problem I can see with the controls is those damn dumb thumbsticks. I was thinking maybe you could get a Dremel. And just hollow the suckers out. Or maybe even and aftermarket thumbstick keycap. That gives it height. For more accuracy. And his jelly like for comfort and grippiness. But if they're too high. It might not be able to close. Other than that this thing is freakin amazing.!!!! And definitely I would love to see the overclocked version without the use of a hockey link connected GPU. But certainly an over a clock with an oculate GPU as well.! "But as always.!" Awesome machine. Excellent review. Badass video.!
Hey! But having vrr would make it better? I dont know im trying to get a pc handheld gaming console and on Reddit and Rog ally fans says vrr is very important and i found so many people refunded the onexfly because it doesn’t include vrr..
@@Itsfrogzilla Well you will get tearing. But it will be vertical. Not horizontal. But it's both good and bad. Bad in that it's tearing at all. But good in that it tears consistently. And does so consistently in the same way. And usually. Your brain will start to filter that out. You won't even see it anymore. But if you look. You will always see it. But the tearing will really only be visible at lower frame rates. Also it's not something that is as noticeable for a smaller screen. Which is why having this type of screen on this type of device is even seen as acceptable at all. Because in this form factor it's much more difficult to notice. But if you are examining it specifically for that function. You will notice it. But based off of its performance. As long as you have the settings correctly configured. It's not something you should really notice.! I'm not sure how much help this information was. But good luck. 👍
@@I86282 thank you so much! Every day im learning more about vrr and handheld devices 😃 hopefully there’ll be a device with vrr before the end of the year
Please test more various triple A titles especially the recent ones. My request is Baldur’s Gate 3. I can imagine it’s gonna be comfortable playing on this form factor.
The GPD discord is full of both praise and complaints of GPD products, even the new ones. Things like hinge cracking, charging not working, ghost cursor and much more. Hope GPD finds a way to improve their quality control and after sales support.
Thanks for the great vid! Quick question: is the screen a touch screen? Went to 2 videos where nobody mentioned about it, but saw just that 1 moment where you touched the screen like it does support touch, so kinda hopeful. Not having touch for a screen size this small is not going to be comfortable. Also, is the screen natively landscape or portrait?
I'd love to see Nier Replicant. It is not an amazing looker, but the engine is pretty inefficient. My 1660ti in my laptop cant hold a steady 60 at 1080p. It would be nice to see how it runs on this. Great video and thank you for your consideration.
I wonder how long are we going to have to wait until we can get at least 6 hours of autonomy from devices like this. I'm surprised by the performance but I'm never going to get used to the abismal battery life 😢.
magnets could cause an issue with the interference of triggers or sticks but I agree they should make a design where triggers were more easily attached. Carrying around the grips could become a chore after some time
I believe the grips sit very low in relation to where the actual bump shoulder buttons are. The marketing pictures are a little deceiving in that regard.
@@AdmiralBison This is the only part of the Nintendo Switch that all these handheld PC's don't borrow from, and it would have been perfect for these handles. Screwing them in all the time is a huge miss.
Why they switched analog stick with ABXY buttons? I'm not saying this is better or worse, but will be uncomfortable for those who uses regular controllers on daily basis and have some muscle memory. Xbox, PS, Steam Deck - they all have buttons at the right side of stick.
How many hours of battery life is it realistic to get out of it at the most? Lets say 60Hz, 50% brightness and browsing, watching a movie or playing a low-end indie title like the Turtles or similar
yo...at this point i'm just watching these videos for the live wallpapers! they are so SICK!!! lol for some reason i can never find the good ones in the store and he stay with a different one every time
I have to wonder if commenters are watching your videos when posting within a minute of the release of a 12 minute video. That aside great video, wondering if Steam OS would work on this or if you have tried it?
Linux compatible so I'm thinking a big yes? Random stranger throwing in his two cents. But? Really liking the specks and form factor of this. If I knew THIS was around, I might of even skipped on the Steam Deck. I've got a lot of personal fav software that runs awesome on Windows. Which actually should also include Steam itself.
This is very cool, I feel the form factor is little too small. The Max is big bulky and heavy to hold but this has a fiddly keyboard and bit chunky. If they slimmed this down went to an 8" screen possibly a 9" it would be perfection. That cpu has serious firepower, the next gen of apu should negate need of a egpu. The 780m is nearly good enough.
Hello, What is the temperature of the GPD laptop in normal use as a laptop (mail, microsoft office, instagram, internet browsing)? I think that when used for games, it heats up more than for normal tasks, like a larger laptop that has a 12.5 inch or 13.3 inch display. Can you do some tests and a review in this regard? Thanks!
Would LOVE TO SEE World of Warcraft Classic: WoTLK or World Of Warcraft Dragonflight! Been considering replacing my MSI Delta 15 with something more portable but because of the way the game engine works, it stresses single cores more than lots of other games (I think because it was a custom engine developed in 2004/5 to run optimally on the single core processors of that era?) Anyway - would love to see how it runs if you're able to make a video!
How os holoOs/chimeraOS on this? Im also curious about the usability of the keyboard since thats the mwin deciding factor between this and the max 2. It seems to work well when uour holding it, but what about flat on the table? Would it work for a game like league or wow or light typing? I like the idea of the max but the size of the mini seems much more appealing
@etaprime What are you using to display the MangoHud-like info on the screen? I’m assuming it’s MSI Afterburner, but for some reason whenever I try to make mine look like yours, some things don’t show up. Can you do a quick tutorial on how to set that up? I like the look of that and the info you’re looking at.
I just really wish other manufacturers would work with Valve on picking up officially supported Steam OS as a OS choice on purchase as Windows 11 is the big reason I still won't really consider these other handhelds as Windows 11 is awful on handhelds and has soooo much bloat, after using the Steam Deck I can't see myself going back to Windows for a handheld.
@@michaelbmw1931 a proprietary OS made by valve for the steam deck based on Linux. It’s designed to be controller first, mimicking a console like experience, but it is still a full desktop OS when you want it.
To be honest, if you had a decent internet connection, you could use GPD alongside Shadow PC or Vagon PC - and you got pretty much a cloud gaming PC on the go
Cant wait to see something like this with qualcom/ nvidia combos SOC. The only thing keeping this from being my dream device is that without any cuda cores its probably not great for stuff like stable diffusion. I have seen breakthroughs for CPU gen recently! Would be cool too see how thisbhandkes dtabke diffusion and maybe some low param LLM! Either way u will get one of these and just run my ML on a server anr control it frim this!
Any chance you could test Rainbow 6 Siege at medium/low? 60/120 HZ, also connected to a portable 120 HZ screen over USB-C. On Battery as well as plugged in. Thanks! It's not the most likely use case for this but R6 on a 120HZ laptop is basically the most demanding gaming experience I do away from my desktop pc.
