i beileve it's before. KnK starts in 1995 (movie 2) and finishes in 1999 (movie 7). tsukihime ends in 2004 (beginning of F/SN). unless i'm crazy, i don't think the events in tsukihime expanded over a decade long.

Well, the part about "moon people" is not entirely wrong. As in, Arcueid is in fact a vampire created based on the ultimate extraterrestrial life form of the moon, she's even supposed to serve as a host for that life form (which is called TYPE-MOON) to use her body to reincarnate, after its original body got wrecked by a Magician hundreds of years ago. And the moon was actually inhabited by its own civilization besides TYPE-MOON him(?)self. The problem is, calling them moon people just sounds incredibly stupid XD
@insanekyo
@insanekyo 8 лет назад
To add to your point, "moon people" may sounds funny to us westerners but in Japan, there's a well known Shinto mythology about deities living on the moon and this could be an alternative take on that.

For people wondering wether there is any hope to enjoy the story of Tsukihime without the visual novel then I would recommend the manga. On a scale it all goes roughly like this: VisualNovel>>>>>Manga>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Anime And if anyone does want to read the visual novel you can find it on the website "Fuwanovel"

I started the VN 3 days ago (2 routes done so far). Everybody who even has a shred of interest in the Nasuverse should play this VN. It's even going to get a remake (I think with an extra arc even), though getting concrete details about that remake is like finding news about Half-life 3...
@jefthereaper
@jefthereaper 10 лет назад
They really need to remake this anime and this time ACTUALLY do it right, for all I care a anime game (like the novel but watch the movie and at a "choice point" choosing your choice starting unique paths in the anime, so that every route is animated and can be watched by whatever choice you make) not to mention they need to hire animators who can actually READ, I mean seriously, Ive read the various manga adaptations from Tsukihime and they kill Arcueid in the park, on the street and here in the anime he killed her in a play-yard, FOR F*s Sake he killed her in her own apartment! Its what makes most sense ether way, it took her hours to regenerate her body until finally she was forced to make a new body instead, if she would have died on the street, park or in a child play-yard, how did nobody notice that body that was there for like 12 hours long?! whoever Type-Moon hired form Kara no Kyoukai, they need to rehire those people for Tsukihime. Quick if possible before all fans go crazy!
@skyler114
@skyler114 10 лет назад
jefthereaper ufotable did Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero, and are working on the Fate Stay/Night remake coming out this fall. Personally In an ideal world I'd like for Ufotable to then do a Tsukihime remake for the spring/winter (winter if they can still do it as a 26 episode run), then an adaptation of Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, and then maybe after that an adaptation of Kagetsu Tohya (Tsukihime's sequel which I suspect I will like almost as much as FHA).
@jefthereaper
@jefthereaper 10 лет назад
skyler114 Yeah I know about that one, even tough I don't really felt like fate/stay night needed a remake, but all by all they did leave out a lot of stuff, so it will be a blast ether way, but honestly I rather would have liked it more if they would have done Tsukihime first :P I guess if I had to rate my favorite's of (novels) from Type moon its the Tsukihime series at place one Kara no Kyoukai second (even tough its a light novel rather then a novel with choices and a lot of images) third place to the fate series. (not due to it being bad or anything but I liked the darker theme of Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai more then the lighter hearted theme of Fate, and vampires and eyes of death perception also score a little higher in my personal likes then the summoning of ancient legends.) Even so kind a wish Type moon would get the same idea as I had already to make a anime-game (the same as the novel, but instead of reading just getting a movie untill you get at a "choice" point where the choice you make will start another movie, allowing you to watch the movie but decide the fate of the outcome. pretty much the same as the novel, but just animated, I really dislike it in the original fate/stay night where they attempted to blend most story's together. All it does is make the story messy. Not to mention if you want to understand every small detail of the Tsukihime plot you actaully have to have those split story's, I mean most people think Shiki has headaces due to his over use of his eyes, but thats far from whats really going on, he should be able to always use them with no problem, its just that there are like (figure of speech) 50 other things meddeling with his body that course him to always get faint and pain. (Akia sharing her life power, SHIKI being linked to him and draining his power) Shiki is constantly being drained by countless things and barely supported by a few. then also his natural ability to become a killer when around supernatural beings also making him go insane is also not very helpful in his condition. Just 1 route could never explain every problem. Leave alone the complex story and drama that comes along with what Shiki himself knows and does not know depending on how the story went.

I've finished Arcueid, Akiha's, and Hisui's routes so far and tbh I anticipate I'll agree with you by the time I finish the other two.

@ffdreamer7290 Both Tsukihime and Kyoukai were written by Type-Moon, however Kyoukai was a novel originally and Tsukihime was a Visual Novel. Kyoukai was released first in 1998 and Tsukihime was released 2 years later in 2000. But yes for no reason other then the author felt like it, they both have similar elements.

I only read the first 2 Arcueid endings and I must say that the anime while being criminally short it was a nice addition to the visual novel (almost like cutscenes in a way). I have to blame the neco arc memes for introducing me to tsukihime and to the subsequent depression afterwards. I'll be looking more into the nasuverse.

I enjoyed Tsukihime, but I found it quite lacking compared to Nasu' s other two main works. The Fate series was brilliant. And Kara no Kyoukai..... that shit is GODLY. Probably because I think KnK is 10x better than the rest (and the fact it was the first Naru work I ever had the pleasure of watching/reading), I can't help but see Tohno as nothing more than a failed attempt to mash Ryougi' s power and Mikiya' s appearance together. But, enough of my little fanboy rant- great vid as always, Arkada!!

I'm fortunate enough to be able to play the game. I'll be getting to it tomorrow, but I have read the manga already. The manga is really good. Arguably one of the best I've read in terms of character, plot, and originality. It doesn't fall into tropes all that much which is really nice to see and although I have a couple questions, there aren't any real plot holes (at least none that I don't expect to be answered in Kogetsu Tohya. In which case, there's only one regarding Shiki's origins.) All that said, it's fascinating to read about a character going through stuff that makes many people uncomfortable -invasive thoughts abound. His estranged sister, the world he sees as fragile, the mentor he had that changed his life (honestly I'm biased because up to that point I relate) this woman he murdered, who comes back and SOMEHOW manages to believably fall in love with him (I was honestly waiting for that explanation, but when they gave it and I gave it some thought I was like... damn, that actually makes sense. Surprised the hell outta me.) it all rounds out a unique play of a typical drama, but in such a gritty and dark way it's fascinating to read. Also, I remember watching the first few episodes of the anime a long time ago, the music is A-class. It beats most other anime ost's with ease, but Shiki isn't done justice. Shiki is not some random Gary Stu in the manga that reader live vicariously through. Excepting myself for unique circumstances, (I doubt many have an Akiha in their lives or see the world as something that can "break" at any moment) Shiki is very much his own character which is really cool considering how easily this could've turned into a harem manga like Rosario Vampire or Tenchi Muyo. Shiki loses himself to his dark side at times. He can act on dark desires we usually keep in check, but on that same token, he challenges us as readers and distances himself. While we may be able to relate to various fantasies, we can't relate to the actual actions he nearly or does commit at times. There's also just the fact of him basically being "I am become death!" at the climax (not literally and no this isn't a spoiler for those who've never read or seen the Tsukihime story.) It is BADASS. I'm glad I remembered this series from so many years ago. Oddly enough it was the opening theme The Sacred Moon that always kept it at the edge of my thoughts. Now, some six, seven (something like that) years later I completely scrap the anime for the manga and damn. I was NOT disappointed at all. I watched a short scene that would've been the anime's equivalent of the climax and to call it a pale shell or inadequate, deplorable bastardization of heartless, artless, soulless mimetics would be an understatement of such magnitude... I couldn't finish watching it. I literally just wanted to see that scene animated and... no. So indeed, anime does not exist. That said, read the manga. I don't know how it holds up to the game (I'm about to find out and I'm looking forward to Akiha and Kohaku sections) but I doubt the game has the magnificent and resonant artwork that captures a mood and the characters quite like the manga manages to so masterfully do. It's simple artwork yes, but it doesn't need to be Ayesha's Secret levels of awesome to be effective at conveying a simple story in a gripping way. The manga also never felt slow. So that's nice. I finished all the chapters in two days. I couldn't stop reading. :P TLDR? Go read the manga. The anime doesn't exist.

If you ask me though, while I know it's very mediocre in itself, I bought every volume that came out from it, which is enough to justify my enjoyment (though now that I'm older, it's a guilty pleasure for sure) of the anime. I still find it to be good enough as a gateway for the uninitiated.

Technically, they helped for a bit, but that was back before Ufotable came around in helping with Type-Moon. Also, Carnival Phantasm was actually more focused on its original visual novels rather than the anime adaptations (a reason why Arcueid looked more faithful from the VN in Carn. Phan. than the Tsukihime Anime.). Plus, that show was produced from a different studio.

I think it would have been better if it was longer, one half focusing on the first storyline and the second half focusing on the second storyline.

I saw this anime about a month ago and I didn't think it was that bad, probably because I never played the game it's based on so I wasn't offended by the changes people hated. A couple of things though that were odd were Shiki killing Arcuaid without much motive and the whole plot about the sister being a vampire not being given much attention.

+Kirstie Perkins Thing is Shiki has this psychopathic subconscious being named nanaya which in tsukihime is represented in his killing intent, also akiha isn't a vampire she is a demon

+Kirstie Perkins I agree. I personally found this show very good and quite moving. At least back in 2005 or something. I knew nothing about VNs, don't care about relations to original and overall still consider it an awesome past. Past because it unfortunately didn't age well. Mostly due to Kara no Kyokai animes (which kicks ass).

+Artem Ponomarev Agreed, I do still like to watch it at least once every other year... down from twice a year when I first saw it and was just getting into anime. The color pallette is kinda dark by the standards of most shows, but I love the content of the narrative in this one, even if it could have been done better. I'm reading the F/SN visual novel right now, but I hope to track this one down someday.

Dunno if anyone brought this up, but one interesting fact about Tsukihime: The director of this show declared that he never really played the original work and his goal is to create an original story...well we now see how it turns out. But again, what am I talking about? There is no anime adaptation for Tsukihime, right?

They're not really related, but i remember reading something about the "nasuverse" which this and the fate's are apart of or something. I'm not really sure, but looking for info about this nasuverse is probably a good place to start.

Is it just me, or do you really resemble Heath Ledger somehow? Anyhow, this anime may suck, but it got me curious and now I absolutely LOVE Melty Blood and am playing/reading the Visual Novel. So it may not be so bad after all, since it also get's people into the whole franchise :D Can't wait for Under Night In-Birth x3

I went out of the way to get the visual novel of tsukihime, and even got a fan-patch for it. Which makes me wonder, why is there two extra tsukihime soundtracks that are unused, and have such good music.
@SindarinElealar

You could say Tsukihime has many of its elements based on Kara no Kyoukai, both being written by Nasu. They're also both based in the same "world" (though parallel realities; all Type-Moon works are more or less based on Kinoko Nasu's "Nasuverse" with its brand of magic, legends, world rules and such) so the parallels aren't that surprising; "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" are a thing of legend in that world and both Shikis have it. Also, Tsukihime has characters based on KoK characters.

Apparently I am the exception to the rule... I discovered this anime back when it first came out in 2000 via fansub. After watching this series and being both intrigued and confused by it.. I discovered Type-Moon. and then the VN. Tsukihime is still my favorite VN.. I agree that this series desperately needed more episodes.. I also agree that the story just outright makes no sense at certain points once you know the source. The music as you said is excellent.. but you also leave out the fact that the opening for this series uses symbolism that pretty much explains the story almost perfectly. I have yet to see a better or more symbolic opening.. other then maybe the Evangelion TV series. I don't dislike this anime, and I will still go back and watch it every once in a blue moon.. (haha I made a punny) Given the constraints of 13 episodes and that they mostly tried to stay true to Arcuied's True end I think they did fine. Now what I am sure everyone can agree on is when TM releases the Tsukihime VN remake.. we get an anime version that does the job fully and completely. My biggest beef with the anime... the maids!! seriously no explanation whatsoever!! literally the most important characters in the series..

you know, even after i played the VN i still liked the anime. maybe it's because it was what introduced me to the Type-Moon Universe (which i ADORE)

I loved the manga...but then again I kinda live in a "vampire free" world...I really don't care too much for them beyond Blood Lust and Dracula...this story was a nice light does of vampire lore that didn't go overboard on the love story aspect. I don't read visual novel either (sadly I have only so much time to read books, watch anime/animation in general plus other movies, and a job...

this anime is exactly why I keep saying they need to hire people to make a OVA of every series that exists right now, kick anybody that has "creativity" OUT! and hire a team that can draw very good, but managed to properly copy/paste the lines from the original game instead of adding there own crap on top of it (ruining everything) and for gods sake draw the characters in the same style as the graphic novel, they remade the characters tons of times already but everybody knows its NEVER going to look better then the original characters. I say burn this edition and get the guys who worked on Hellsing OVA to work on Tsukihime OVA, those people at least did what they had to, Animate the original series without smearing there own junk all over it, without censoring anything like spineless weaklings. Its animated versions like that that give the original series a bad name and spit on all fans of the series.

What are you talking about? The Fate/Stay Night anime mainly follows the Fate route only, it does have elements from the UBW route, but it's minor, it doesn;t mesh Heaven's Feel in there aswell, and the bit from UBW, again, was minor.

Funnily enough, my main issue with this show from a logical standpoint is the writing, but the reason I absolutely loath this show is due to how they butchered the character designs😂 arcueid looks like a 40 year old mom with none of the chemistry and adorable bubbly energy of the VN version. If you want an adaptation that successfully took bits a pieces from all routes without it being utter garbage, I highly recommend the manga

Later you found out that it wasnt random.It has to do with the Shiki's past,in the VN at least.I cant remember if the anime ever tried to explain that.
