Grand Seiko SBGM247 - Better than an Explorer II? 

Explorer watches are just very hard to get hold of.

grand seiko can send it back and repolish everything with zaratsu polishing. So I see it as a win-win.

If I can you do it all over again, I'll buy a Grand Seiko quartz and a great G Shock and call it a day. No service it every couple years which cost 500+ and waiting for a couple months to be serviced. Get great finishing and design, accuracy, and just change out the battery every couple of years. Wear it nearly everyday. Gshock are just for the rough jobs. Watches can break.

What’s the quartz version?

@@rivers8116 SBGN003 and SBGN005. SBGN027 and SBGN029 may have just replaced those though. There isn't a quartz equivalent with the green dial. SBGN029 appears to be the quartz equivalent of the SBGM245.

For many people the Seiko Presage range is a great watch to have. They are very well made and if you look out you may find one that is suitable for your tastes.

@@BruceWilliams yea that’s not what I asked. And I mean specifically this bracelet, which looks new. And yes I know everyone likes the feel of Rolex. I have both Rolex and Tudor, in addition to a more dainty, titanium grand seiko. That bracelet, on the snowflake, may not be as “satisfying” as my Rolex group sports watches, but it’s not meant at to be. And it’s more intricate than anything Rolex has ever done. There’s more to bracelets than being robust.

@@jswede1 If you have a snowflake, this one essentially feels the same. Just in steel and with microadjust. If you're looking for a more solid GS bracelet the best one to date is the one on the new series nine line. But those still don't compare to modern Rolex in terms of comfort, solidity, and adjustability.

In an survival situation I would rather have at least a Tudor on my wrist. I got ExpII and Iove it.

Get a Casio protrak for hiking more durable that all automatics and won’t hurt your budget

I know up here in Alaska those garman gps watches have saved a lot of lives because they hit the emergency button after falling or a bear attack and had to get saved. Thanks for the suggestion Iyad. It means you can adjust the hour hand while the watch is still running.

Green is my favorite watch color and just my favorite color period

IF you can get an Explorer 2 at retail it’s half the price but most of us can’t. Second hand market these are like 13k for a 2021, 2022 model, but really they’re worlds apart. Rolex is a chunkier toolish kind of watch to whereas GS is a bit dressier, and sleeker and an overall more refined sort of watch.

Even some grand seikos are becoming pretty hard to get and going over retail like the elegance watches

I would choose a polar over this if offered one at retail. Like many I have a soft spot for the model

The date windows on GS are larger than expected. I personally can’t stand a cyclops window it reminds me of someone with glasses who is near-sighted and their eyes look to big, so I immediately get the whole grandpa vibe from it. It’s the one thing that’s kept me from seriously buying a Rolex. But to each their own.

I wish they ditched the "Grand" part, I think it's chintzy.

They want to keep Seiko name because of its history. Seiko was founded in 1800s by a watch maker who was in the watch business since he was 13. Seiko made the first production quartz watch and Seiko won first place in the Gevena Observatory coming from placing 100s with their mechanical watches. It was actually the Swiss with quartz that took the top spots which is surprising since you think Seiko you think quartz. According to Wiki lol, the swiss didnt think they need to switch over to quartz. Seiko still won with thier overall score at the Gevena Observatory taking 4th to 10th. Before Orient Merge with Seiko. Orient actually made high end watches too, but stop due to conflicting with Grand Seiko. They could have made their high end watches with Orient, but decided Seiko to move high end and I think it is because its history. Orient was found in the 1950s, so way newer than Seiko.

Grand Seiko is a respectable brand and it’s rated as their high end line, but there would be no Grand Seiko without Seiko. Seiko is a great introductory brand, but if you love Japanese innovation and have a little more to spend then Grand Seiko is an amazing brand to try.

I could see how some people would love the orange and green contrast and bezel and other details on this but you really think it’s the best looking GS?!? I still think it’s a messy watch, doesn’t come together too well.

@@ohroonoko I own this exact watch, and i tried all the models available at the AD here. This was for me the best looking one in that price range. Tried a few Omega's also, but even with the naked eye you could see the difference in finishing between GS and Omega. GS is clearly way nicer.

Small question. Why? Because Rolex is the bigger brand? Because it smells like a hommage? It can't be accuracy or price.

@@jshwck4210 Well, in this case, since this GS does not have Spring Drive, this Rolex is more accurate. In any event, I'm not a brand snob. I've had a Grand Seiko before and really like the brand. I have no doubt I'll get another. I also have Rolex and like the brand. In this case, I have the Polar Explorer II and somehow it has become my absolute favorite watch in my collection. More than my other two Rolex, more than my two Omegas and more than the rest of my watches. It's just, for me, absolutely awesome. Aesthetically, IMO, there is no contest...the Explorer II beats this particular GS. I don't like where the crown is on this GS, where the date window is on this GS, or just the overall shiny nature of this GS. It's also too thick. I like GS models like the Snowflake...dressier versions with Spring Drive. On a positive note, nice to see a GS with an improved bracelet and clasp.

interesting. I also think that it looks not toolish enough. Just wanted to know. Classic answer would be Seiko sucks and is for people to poor for Rolex. And i hate it.

@@jshwck4210 yeah, I'm not that guy. I love Grand Seiko. I will say I never bought a regular Seiko till just a couple months ago. I got myself the Seiko 5 Worn and Wound 10 Anniversary LE. (SRPH81). Love it.
