That’s because mercenaries are usually called contractors. They usually have loyalties to the country that they are from. So they normally don’t just fight for the highest payer.

The Americans didn't start it, mercenaries have been around for thousands of years. Even the word "freelancer" was originally a term for mercenary, Lancers on horseback free from obligation to any nation. People should also remember that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to mercenaries. They are under international law, open game.

Mercenaries were not introduced by Ottomans. If you look deep into history of warfare you'll find them everywhere. Mostly they were used by Christian Kings in 1&2 Crusades. Roman's used them , Alexander used them. Interesting stuff is that most of the times Private soldiers were actually slaves, farmers, poor citizens forced by kingdoms /Lords / Knights/ Nobles / Warlords to fulfill their military objectives.

The main role of a mercenary force is to engage and keep your enemy occupied and weaken them from within so that your main army can win the war for you. Indian empires like Mauryas & Guptas used to enrol mercenaries. Indian military establishment kindly note.

This is definitely one of many reasons why I would never give up my second amendment. I could definitely see our own government using private armies to subjugate the populace. Even though we would be horribly outmatched, I'd rather have some means to defend myself. I have no problem with small groups of mercenaries. I honestly believe some people who were formerly in the military got burned out. Especially those that fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of their brothers and sisters gave up life and limb for nothing.

Honestly if major powers could keep their mercs clean and only allowed to be used against actors, and only go into conflicts and areas, a lot of the issues with the practice would go away. This actually helped a lot against piracy off the Somali coast.

Some of his is misleading. Private armies (or private security contractors, private military companies private militias, mercenaries, soldiers for hire, as they are often called) DID NOT start in the 14th Century and DID NOT start with the USA. This is a flat out lie. Mercenaries and private armies have been around for over one thousand years, long before the birth of Christ. And long before the writing of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Furthermore, you cannot blame America for the world's use (or even proliferation) of private armies, militias and security contractors.

When she says the US started it, she's referring to the use of mercenaries on an international scale to conduct dirty work without affiliation to the related government. Mercenaries have existed since forever; it's how theyve been utilized in modernity that America is responsible for propagating. My country's leadership is sooo manipulative it's disturbing. Janissaries are not mercenaries. They were the Elite troops of the Ottoman army. They can be compared to the Roman Praetorian Guard. If you want to name mercenaries of the middle ages you can mention the Italian Condottieris.
