Daniel Bachman stops by the Fretboard Journal to put his workhorse Martin D-18 through its paces on William Moore's "Old Country Rock."
Bachman’s father purchased this Martin new in ’71. The instrument has since seen its fair share of battle scars, cigarette burns and neck damage… not to mention a M.I.A. pickguard. But it seems to serve as the perfect tool for Bachman and his American Primitive style of guitar playing. In this video, Bachman explains how he obtained the guitar and just what has happened to it on the road.

Every Daniel Bachman video I watch there are always armchair critics in the comments section talking about the tuning. RU-vid American Primitive guitar. Check out Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, some early Kottke, John Fahey etc. You may come out of the adventure still not liking the sound but at least you'll get it.

I don't get the hate...the dude plays and sounds like and old bluesman. It's his dad's old Martin. Lucky guy.

Sir I have a 1971 Martin D-18 with a black case and the inside lined with black fur how do you determine if the case is original

What brand thumbpick is Bachman using here? It's not a Herco. I tried zooming in at 3:07 and it looks like it might be a Dunlop, but I'm still not sure.

Yes this guitar sounds out of tune...BUT my ears are telling me that it is tuned WAY LOW!! My eyes are telling me that it is very likely by watching string oscillations.

Wait, really? People are making critical comments but are also apparently unaware that there are alternate tunings? Explore the guitar some more before you render your absolutely meaningless judgements.
