How to grow beans from seed at home. I planted several pole bean vines of the Old Homestead variety in my vegetable garden. I made sure to protect them from animals like groundhog and deer. They sprouted fast and were on their way to producing a bumper crop of green beans and dry beans. I did companion planting of the beans squash and okra.

Siloé i must tell you i absolutely love your channel and video's. I eagerly await for new video's to come out. Not only do offer good practical advice to us everyday gardeners. But you are such a strong sense of inspiration for me. All types of gardeners, especially for beginner and intermediate gardeners will benefit from your channel. And frankly, who cannot be impressed by a man gardening who's fully and formally dressed. My garden attire consists of either shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt. So kudos to you, for looking like quite the gentleman while you're gardening. I know that this year you're testing the garden out to see what will grow and what won't grow, and I think that's very important. By taking that initially year to see what's going to work and not. You're avoiding many costly mistakes. My only suggestion to you, would be once you've determined this, to actually sit down in the autumn or winter. And make a fully written out plan. Having this on paper really helps to concentrate the mind. Keep up the excellent work Siloé, you have a loyal follower and friend in me.

It means a lot to me to know that my work is appreciated. I’m sure over time we see those we watch as friends. While the digital world can be cold at times, it is always reassuring to hear back. It humanizes the experience. I’m glad that you chose to watch my videos to unwind and get inspired. Part of the reason why I’m dressing more as an augmented version of myself in the videos is to create a place where people can escape to. Thank you so much for the feedback my friend

I created a stick pile in my backyard for the small birds, and I did notice a pretty orange flowering vine growing in the pile over the summer. I didn't make the connection between the sticks and the curling aspect of vine tendrils until you spoke of it.
@ntcssj
@ntcssj 4 года назад
Our beans are also started to grow big tendrils now. We have a meter-height stone wall in the south facing side of our garden and I hope to use that as their supporting structure, but until they grow much taller, I know they won't be getting access to as much of the full sun as they could. Grow beans, grow!
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
That is usually the case where as they grow they are more exposed to the sun, away from shade cast by other things.

It's July in Michigan and we haven't had rain since I can't remember. My 375 gallon rain collection system is at a little less than 50%. My potatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, herbs and tomatoes are loving it, peppers and corn are suffering. I lost all of my beans and have to start again only this time it will be dedicated blue lake pole. Thankfully it's a speedy crop and I expect to get a harvest regardless of the set back.

beans, squash, watermelon, melon, okra, radish, carrot, beets, turnips all do well when planted directly.

The cages can become greenhouses in the winter? I wonder what you think of winter gardening.

They would have to be sturdier for that and have weather tight seals, unless I used plastic, which I don't like to.

I planted several green and yellow bush beans...but they always get eaten by bugs and we had a frost and lost many plants so not being able to find green beans i planted dry soup beans I planted a black bean turtle bean? And pinto bean Can i eat these beans as a green bean?
@suburbanhomestead
@suburbanhomestead 4 года назад
I haven't tried that, but I suppose they could be eaten as green beans when really young, like this variety I'm growing, but they probably won't taste as good as regular green beans.

@@suburbanhomestead yes thats what i was just told lol too stringy but edible They are strong plants i don't mind either way a bean is a bean...at least if you don't harvest quick enough you can still get beans and not just seed ;) Thanks

Just a suggestion, but a good farm dog would help with that groundhog... even if it is just the scent that keeps it away.
