Today we're excited to show you one of our favorite and easiest fruit trees to grow in Arizona! The Wonderful pomegranate, the same variety you will normally find in the grocery store, is a fast-growing, highly productive fruit tree, and loves our climate!
We bought this tree for $7 a couple of years ago. While it was only a foot tall and no bigger around than a pencil, it has grown tremendously and has given us way more than $7 worth of pomegranates in the last two seasons! With a little care, and keeping an eye out for pests like the leaf-footed bug, this tree has been a joy to have in our backyard.
Are you growing a pomegranate tree? What is your favorite variety? Let us know in the comments!

Dope video as always guys! Two things: 1) I have a mature pomegranate that is huge and it thrives off of water once every two weeks (flood irrigation) and nothing more. 2) When you pick them, roll them around on a hard surface. Score it around (circumference), twist it apart and then beat it with a big spoon. Those seeds just fall out - no mess! Keep the videos coming! How’s the pond doing?

I grew a whole lot of pomegranate seedlings from a pomegranate that I bought from the supermarket & I've planted a couple of the smaller ones for my dad in his backyard mainly as shade trees. They will grow well in my Australian location (north of Sydney in Australia) & I probably don't even have to water 💦 them in my area since they are native to more arid countries such as Iran,we have been getting into the triple digits here (108-109°F or as I say 42-43°C) during the last days of spring over here. I'm going to plant them in a permanent location next year where I can plant them in the ground as they're planted in pots at the moment !

@GreeniesGarden

Watering seems to be everyone's biggest question, and it's hard to give an exact schedule because a lot of it comes down to the specific microclimates that your trees are growing in! It sounds like you've got it figured out! :D

So when do you prune it back? After it loses all it's leaves in mid winter time? Do you ever fertilize it, or just mulch?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
We prune occasionally all year round to keep it out of our pathways, but generally it's best to do the majority of your pruning in the winter when the tree is bare and you can really see what you're working with. We feed all of our plants with several different organic foods, especially fish emulsion, seaweed extract, and compost! We try to feed at least 3 times a year, but you can't really overdo it on organic foods :D

I have a question in case you see this post sentence over a year since you posted this. But I have a Wonderful pomegranate. It bloomed this fall again and has a pomegranate on it about the size of a golf ball this is the middle of October 2019 wondering why I have fruit that has been on there since early spring. A family member did decide to trim my Bush without my permission and I'm wondering if it's because it has new wood on it. I have been waiting until it goes dormant to trim as a rule.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Great idea to prune when it is dormant. If your fruits are staying small, try feeding your tree more or open up more sunlight for it if you can!

@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Usually a lot of yellowing leaves indicates overwatering. It's hard to overwater most plants in the summer in Phoenix, but pomegranates are actually drought tolerant and don't want to sit in too much water. Try cutting back a bit and keep an eye on it! :)

Offtopic: Is it possible to grow corn on fields in Arizona without watering? I'm wondering what the local farmers are growing since it's so dry and whether you plan on expanding your property to grow chickens and whatnot.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Great question, and we're not sure of the answer! We see tons of corn fields out here, but from what we have seen, they are all grown on farmland with flood irrigation, meaning the river water from the canals gets deposited on the land a couple times a month. We would love a bigger property one day, but no plans for now!
@inharmonywithearth9982
@inharmonywithearth9982 2 года назад
The Hopi always grew corn in Northern Arizona with no irrigation but they planted a special corn in a special way of numerous deeply planted clumps. It is not as rainy as it should be lately in summer and not as much snow for ground water in winter.Because of this dryness they are not doing it very well anymore. The weather is VERY un- natural now. South Arizona always just grows cactus and desert brush without irrigation. There are exotic plants though that are better for south arizona than corn or anything else that can grow without irrigation. Carob is the best if you want protein chocolatey irrigation free trees. Nobody plants carob since the 1800s cattle company venture. The Carob trees get huge and feed everything around forever. Warning they produce SO many chocolate -ish pods they stink and are major messy! The pods lie all over the dry ground. More than you can sell or eat

Hey guys! Thanks for the video! Was your tree grafted, a cutting, or a seedling? I'm gardening in south Texas (@chachalaca_gardens) and I planted three trees from seed about four years ago. My biggest one is about 6 or 7 feet tall now, but it still has not set any fruit at all! SO SAD :( It's such a beautiful tree though. I'm wondering if pomegranates have to be planted as cuttings in order to bear fruit sooner.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
We're not sure, but since it fruited so early, it was probably either grafted or a cutting. Seedlings can take years to set fruit, but since you've already invested 4 years into them, keep at it! Makes sure to keep them on a good feeding schedule as well, phosphorus (the middle number on a fertilizer) encourages blooms and fruit set, so it wouldn't hurt to increase that! :D

It could be a number of things -- not enough water, too much shade, over- or under-fertilization. Since it is only 2 years old and you watered less this summer than last summer, I would suggest watering a little more and see if that helps. If you haven't been feeding it, you can always add some fish emulsion, worm castings, or compost to increase the available nutrients. Hope this helps!

@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
We water by hand, so it varies from day to day. Usually we give our pomegranate a few minutes of water with the hose on full blast, and we spray down the entire area that it is growing in to keep the mulch wet. Sometimes we leave the hose on for a few hours on accident, but since we create "islands" in our yard, the water stays within the berm and essentially flood-irrigates the area. :)

How do you control the bugs that drill holes ?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 2 года назад
When they are young, you can shake them off the plant into a bowl of soapy water. When they mature, they grow wings and just fly away, so it's important to try to catch the problem before it's too late. Remove any fallen fruit at the end of the season so they can't overwinter in the pomegranate shells. We seem to have more of them this year than ever before, they apparently enjoy mulberries and tomatoes, too! Hope this helps!

I had to move mine from where it was getting full sun because the wind was coming through and traumatizing it. Now its in a partial shade spot but with more protection from the wind. Its such a wild ugly little shrub. So I'm going to work on pruning it when it goes to sleep this winter. Hopefully next year will be the year it produces.
