@@mobius2176 After the Human-Covenant War ended, only a couple weeks before the War Memorial was created in Kenya and Lord Hood's speech at the end of Halo 3, ONI launched an operation using an ODST Fireteam, Kilo-5. The purpose was to try and destabilize the Elites to avoid any former Covenant race regaining enough strength to pose a risk to Humanity. Most Elites after the war still harbored hatred for Humanity, and the UNSC Infinity was still unfinished, had yet to receive it's Forerunner upgrades after re-exploring Onyx/Trevelyan (Onyx's new name after the Human-Covenant war), and the Spartan-IV program had yet to be started. To make it a bit worse, Kilo-5's mission did result in a large portion of the conflict in Halo 4 and 5. The destabilization of the Elites worked a little too well at first, almost resulting in a Civil War starting right then and there (as some of the Elite still possessed Covenant warships and could have easily stomped out The Arbiter's budding alliance), only to be quelled with Infinity's maiden voyage. In a prior set up for the mission, an Elite, Jul 'Mdama, saw a handoff of scavenged Covenant Weapons (hidden with trackers so ONI could track rebel Elite movements) to an Elite who opposed The Arbiter's views. Kilo-5 captured him to avoid him blowing the operation and making it known to the rest of the Elites of ONI supplying weapons to Elites who would oppose, and possibly rebel against, The Arbiter. They held him on Onyx/Trevelyan for a short time before he managed to coerce an Engineer and use Forerunner technology on the planet to escape. His escape lead him to a small Covenant Fleet, thought to be abandoned/lost during the war. With his emergence from Forerunner tech, the Covenant forces began to revere and follow him, making the bulk of his initial fleet that we would see upon the Cheif's awakening above Requiem. The details were from the Kilo-5 trilogy of books: Glasslands, The Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata (trilogy goes in that order). The first two are where they take place.

@@PhoenixOfArcadia Why not just secretly kill the elites who fought for the Covenant and still hate humanity? EDIT: Also you'd think maybe after the Covenant screwed them over they'd maybe realize they have more in common with humans than they thought... Or at the very least feel bad and dishonorable after they murdered billions of civilians. I don't see how they could see themselves as honorable and humanity as dishonorable/bad after they did the most dishonorable things imaginable (genocide).

@@andyfriederichsen Ah yes, because wiping out almost half the species who all of which still held a grudge against humanity would go *sooo* well. More over, the plan wasn't "get rid of all the ones that don't like humanity", as much of the Elites, including the Arbiter, still had some form of dislike of humanity. Rather, it was just "make it so the Elites won't be able to challenge humanity", and just having them fight among themselves is a simple and effective method. In addition, many Elites still held grudges against humanity and just about all were devout followers of the Covenant, even following the Great Schism. What got them to side with Humanity was not "the Covenant is wrong and screwed us over", but rather it was more "the Prophets betrayed us and lied about the Great Journey" and allied with Humanity as both "enemy of my enemy is my friend" and they also don't want to die when the Halo rings fire.

@@PhoenixOfArcadia Hopefully more start to recognize that humans aren't as bad as they think and that their actions while serving the Covenant were not just dishonorable but also evil.

Honestly dialogue is something that 343 nails down really well. They can write a good story I know they can

Buck is the only one I respect in this group because he, while slightly nerfed in this one, has more of a personality and a backstory here

Well I learn all there is to know about Tanaka in her first line of dialogue. "HoMe wOrLd GaT GlAsSeD"

I mean, maybe that's the point. If you just look at these characters for their actions in the game, you won't likely learn to much about them. Its once they arnt focused on battle and open up where you can learn about their personalities. I see it as a way to connect with the characters without having it forced onto you through the main game

@@FireForged_Music I actually think it's better to learn your characters ingame rather than just through cutscenes. it's just a matter of how you pace the dialogue in relation to the gameplay.

Matt White they had massive rewrites very late into the game, I forgot the reason, I’m assuming a lot of this is before the rewrites or just wasn’t affected by it.

Tanaka actually served during the requiem campaign in fireteam Domimo, so it would make sense others in Osiris did as well.

I don't wanna be the guy who defends the writing of Halo 5's campaign but it seems like they only used cutscenes in this game for the major events. It's actually smarter to put all this dialogue here because you can listen to it at your own pace and it keeps the spaces between combat feel less desolate.

My theory is that the UNSC intentionally makes it bad so that it hurts the covenant’s ears. Make it hard for them to understand. Just a theory though.

Most people will just stand around waiting for the dialogue someone like me I don’t have the patience to sit around for all the dialogue but you’d be interested in some of the things you can come across

Before launch, 343 told everyone "to take your time so you don't miss anything." Turns out "take your time" meant stand-around for 5+ minutes in an area for dialogue you don't even know exists to play. You don't know which areas will trigger dialogue, which areas count as separate areas for new dialogue, etc. It's entirely unpredictable.

@@omni6982 Firstly, personal-insults are uncalled-for. Being impatient (which I'm not) is far more respectable than unnecessary insults. Secondly, it varies - again with no clear distinction between what the game considers a new area or not.

It’s got loads of personality, it just doesn’t feel like the things they’re saying match with the way things look and play out. Everything looks so clean and sleek, but everything they say is so rugged and rough.

Everyone knew one day that Buck would be a Spartan miss the Rookie though he would make a fine Spartan just like Buck if he had survived

Peronsal theory probably doesn't make any sense though. The two Halo 5 trailers that switch the position of who is talking and who is defeated always gave me the idea Locke is following in the image of the Chief from Halo 4. In Halo 4. The Chief was depicted as more of a machine than human. Being part of a new generation of Spartan, Locke want to live up to that expectation of the old Spartans so he determines the best way to do this is to follow in the image of the Chief(Halo 4). In Halo 5 we don't see the Chief give much emotions until he is with Cortana (a program). I believe Cortana was supposed to change Chief from a machine for war into a human who decides his own fate. With this change Chief would go "rogue" and his choices would lead to some conflict with the UNSC in some form. When this happens we were suppose to play as Locke and hunt done the Chief. While playing as Locke we would see him make decisions that reflect the idea that a Spartan should be a machine. As Locke searches and gets closer to the Chief he would sees the results of the choices that Chief made which conflict with the image that Locke has made with what it means to be a Spartan. And it leads us back to the two Halo 5 trailers. A Chief who beginning a journey where he has the say in his own fate and Locke a Spartan who wants to preserve the image of what a Spartan should be. Again it a theory and probably makes no sense at all.

Dude was an ONI Acquisition Specialist (Assassin) who was orphaned following the glassing of Jericho 7 by the covenant. Not much room to develop emotionally.

The man was a beast before Oni, before joining the Unsc and before becoming a Spartan. They skipped out on all his lore. He is a professional/warrior/assassin through and through. No slouch.

I think it's a hatred towards the UNSC in general. The meridians' hate is aimed at the Spartans due to the latter's affiliation with the UNSC
