Physical Therapist Bob Schrupp demonstrates a comprehensive six exercises for the hand and fingers. Range of motion for arthritis, for rehab, or after surgery.
Bob.. I have broken my right hand in 7 places. so your physio therapy is great. BUT it would be MUCH more useful if you allowed time to do the 10 repetitions for each exercise before moving on to the next exercise. Counting out the 10 reps would be very encouraging. Please make another video with these improvements so I can follow your video when I can not get to my own therapist
I recently had trigger finger release surgery on my right ring finger and followed your exercise recommendations shortly after the procedure. Initially most of the exercises were quite painful, but I kept at it and eventually could make it through all 6 exercises. I had my first post-op exam 10 days after my procedure and my doctor could not believe the range of motion I was able to demonstrate. Your exercises helped me avoid a recommendation for physically therapy. I am continuing the routine as I still have some stiffness in my finger, but MUCH improved. Thanks tons!
Thanks for these very helpful hand exercises. I had hand surgery a week ago. Yesterday my surgeon asked me to get into therapy right away. The therapy center doesn't have an opening until next week. With the help of your video I'll be way ahead with range of motion, flexibility, and strength. Thanks again.
Great video. 2 weeks into recovery from a pip joint replacement. Still very swollen which hampers these movements, not to mention bad arthritis in all dip joints too, but encouraged me to carry on with the painful exercises! Thank you
These are perfect for me. About 6 months ago I tripped up resulting in a close fracture of the 2nd and 4th finger. After being in a cast for 6 weeks my fingers were quite weak and knuckles almost non-existent. I have being doing some exercises but your sets of exercises are just perfect as they are helping to build up my knuckles and giving my fingers even more dexterity so thank you very much.
Thanks for the exercises, a few months back i got 3rd degree burns on both of my hands and after countless days in the hospital I'm getting better range in both of my hands. These exercises will definitely help alot.
Its been 4 months since i broke my pinky finger and i have been so close to making a fist but it would hurt so bad as i was getting close and would not bend anymore after watching this i was able to fully make a first for the first time thank you so much!
I knit and have begun experiencing pain in middle finger that is quite intense. I rest it till the pain goes away and then begin again. I'm going to incorporate some of these exercises and if nothing changes will go to PT.
god bless u doc....i am gonna do these exercises on my hand since i just had surgery..is very difficult to deal with an injury of this kind ..gives me limited independence and it feels depressive..thanks for helping others..
I had my cast removed from 5th metacarpal break 4days ago.. I had a splint for 10days then a full cast for 3 weeks so all in all not so bad just over 4weeks ... hand and wrist are sore .. obviously little finger won't bend as much... does anyone know how long the pain lasts ? I can't make a fist either yet... working on it... I know it takes time... also... how many times a day should these exercises be done as I wasn't offered any physical therapies !!!
I have a question my hand recently went through a 4th metacarpal fracture and I received surgery. After surgery I see my hand has a bump on the top of my hand near the ring and pinky finger. Would it be possible for the bump swelling to suppress if I got the the ha d therapy my doctors offered? Thanks
im making new device for gaining finger movement back will it be helpful for patients, if you can train your fingers by placing them in an exercise device while you can move the finger by the help of a wirelessly controlled device ? I cant share the whole thing but they will be able to train them selves easily by doing the moves you just did , so is it useful for them ?
Hi Dr. Schrupp, i had a broken pinky finger like 10 years ago i didnt had any proper therapy at that time...now im kind of paying the price for what i did...can i still do this exercises to recovery?...thanks for sharing this video and more power to you!
Wow, thank you BobSchrupp. I broke my left thumb at the base a couple of months ago, and after being in a cast for 6 weeks, my whole hand was seized up, the index finger and thumb especially. The cast was removed about 2 weeks ago, & I've been doing exercises given to me by the physiotherapist, but nothing nearly as effective as this. I've already regained maybe 80% of the ROM back using the exercises provided by the physio, but the thumb is still quite stiff. These exercises are quite challenging, but I can tell they're going to be effective at getting the full use of my hand back quickly. Ordinarily, I lift very intensely in the gym 6 days a week, but haven't been at all due to this injury. I go to see the orthopedic surgeon on the 12th for a final follow up, and hopefully get the go-ahead to start lifting again. I was already making spectacular gains before the break, but will be hopping on the TRT once I start back (I turn 42 this summer). So, I expect to go roaring into the gym and make 10x the progress (naturally, I'll be going easy on the thumb for the next few months). Thanks again very for the exercises, they're going to help tremendously...
+TheMacDKB I'm curious about how your hand is doing now. I just had my cast and surgical pins removed yesterday, and like you, my hand has seized up on me. I had a displaced break in my ring finger's second joint/knuckle. After six weeks of immobilization, and four in a very snug-fitting cast, my hand is sore, an I can't do much more than barely wiggle the last three fingers. My wrist is also really stiff and sore, and everything is a bit swollen. Does this sound like what you experienced? If so, I'm going to stop worrying--laughing--but not really, because this has been such an ordeal, and I'm genuinely concerned about the use of my hand. How would you say things are now? I should be starting PT this week. There is no way I could even come close to these exercises. My fingers just won't move.
I dis a few weeks of physio, and that helped restore some range of motion. There are exercises you can do to get it going again. do some Googling. It's been 15 months and tough the hand isn't 100% yet, it's coming along.
+TheMacDKB I just removed the really negative comment i posted just a week ago. Apparently, Ive made really good progress according to all the measurements taken earlier this week by the occupational therapist. I've also finally been given the green light on taking ibuprofin, which helps tremendously. It's only been three weeks since the cast was removed, so I am just going to keep on doing the absolute best I can. To anyone else out there, dealing with a hand injury, do not give up. You might feel like you cannot do even one more repetition of the exercises given to you, but try again anyway. You need your hand. I just never had any idea a broken finger could cause so much trouble. Thanks for your reply TheMacDKB. Glad to hear of your progress : )
+TheMacDKB I know that now.--just keep at it. You are so right. It's really shocking to me just how much an injury like this can mess with your thinking. Depressing, frustrating, demoralizing, but then a professional OT says, "Hey, you've made a lot of progress," and I feel like having a parade, whereas last week, this time, I wanted that finger removed. Thanks for the encouragement.
Hello. I recently had my cast removed from my right hand where i was recovering from a broken 5th metacarpal. My hand has become difficult to move.Almost stiff. Specifically my ring finger and pinky finger. I currently cant close my hand completely. The discomfort i feel is not in the broken area but instead it feels like its coming from the tendons and ligaments whenever i try to move my hand.Im not sure if im explaining this right its hard to explain the feeling. Do these exercises help me in this case? Or are there other excercise I should do? Thank you. How many times a day should i do the 6 pack?
Can you please tell me the rationale why you're extending your wrist? Thank you! In my own observation, i think that you're extending your wrist for you to be able to isolate the muscles of the hand? Am I correct?
It's a good video. My distal phalanx joint has been fractured and after 5 weeks also it has some pain and I can't bend fully at tht point wt I hv to do plz reply me
Will it work with my finger? My finger is stiff, can not flex after surgery. I so regret that I did surgery I should have just let it heal naturally that way it could flex after that.
Thank you Mr. Schrupp. I recently started a job that I love but the repetitive nature of the work has made my hands hurt. Just doing these exercises with the video has already made a difference in how my hands feel! I'll be sharing your video with any co-workers who might benefit from it. :)
I can only do 1 of these.. 4 weeks after surgery my hand is still bruised and swollen, my local gp say they cant refer me for physio lol because its post op i have to ring the hospital i went to 80miles away (its the best hand unit in the uk)
Hello, Thanks for your video. But, of course, I have a question. I have tingling in my ring and little fingers on both hands. Also, I play the piano and I've noticed my ring finger on my right hand locks up at times while I play. For years, I have had to type constantly on my job. I am still working and I'm no spring chicken. :) I have started to do the exercises on this video but are there any more I can add to my therapy? I try to stay off of the computer (after work) but I do have to use it for personal purposes at times and I enjoy playing the piano. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. :)
Shenick Pop for the numbness you might watch this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u9ezkXRPIck.html the locking in the finger sounds like "Trigger Finger" or stenosing tenosynovitis. things that help with that: rest, ice or hear- warm water soaks, and the stretching exercises shown. Your Doctor might recommend a steroid injection. good luck.
Hi bob i have a question please reply: I have broke my mallet finger before 7 weeks the broken place is in the middle its diagonally / so the doctor made a surgery and now its seems very good but my finger its kinda numb is that normally my doctor said that after the wound is heald i need to start with exercise/ therapy and i wanted to ask you about my wound should I cover it with bandage or should I leave it uncovert thx
Besim Fazliu the numbness is not uncommon- it can take months for that to go away. You should check with your doctor about the wound- but generally if it is still open it needs to be covered. Good luck to you.
Guys, are products called hand excercisers (like gripmaster or varigrip) recommendable (and harmless) to improve my guitar techniques, I know this question may seemis stupid but these tools are portable and that's exactly why i'm looking for.
I have two screws in my small finger from a displaced fracture of the bottom bone. I hope after 6 weeks of healing I can get my small finger working regularly again
My finger still has some significant swelling to it at the bottom. I'm in no pain at all but my range of motion is limited still and I cannot straighten my finger at the distal interphalangeal (dip joint). Hopefully I get better as time goes on. How's your injury going?
These Five exercises are great!!! I'm unclear what the 6th exercise is? 1. Table to claw 2. Open close 3. Open full knuckle tuck 4. Thumb to fingers 5. Spread sideways
+Brad Hayes Table is considered number one and claw is considered number 2. I know it seems like one exercise- but that is how I was taught it. good luck to you.
I had the cast off today. My fifth Metacarpal was broke. (Boxer fracture I guess.) I have extreme pain and swelling in the hand. Trying to do these exercises but my pinky barely moves . Any advise would be appreciated It has been 6 weeks since the injury.
Ray Flynn I'm in the same boat as you... my cast was removed 4 days ago from a 5th metacarpal break... my knuckle is now lower down so I have a lump on my hand... I think it's a mixture of swelling too....
nice excercise but is that normal if cant move my finger at all? will it go away by doing this day by day? the doctor who did the surgery when she took off the junk and out the 3 spikes tried out my finger if its working and it did with a LOT of help, so just asking because there is no anykind of rehab at my local hospital .. my pinky broke between the lower and the middle phalanx and also the middle phalanx in half ...okay not at all, i can move the upper phalanx a bit where my finger is healthy
szkokee I don't know if your finger will eventually improve with the exercises. However it is very unlikely to improve if you don't do the exercises. I would do these exercises at least 2x per day. Improvement can be slow. Stick with it and good luck to you!
BobSchrupp i had carpel tunnel surgery on both hands last summer two weeks apart. had to retun to work within one week of each surgery. have a job were i must use my hands opening small plastic bags, putting candy in and closing up the bag. it is now 6 months since i had surgeries and now experiecing pain in palms, stiffnes in wrists and fingers especially stiff in morning and takes half hour before i can use them. will be going to a ruematologist 2 months from now. may have RA . what do you suggest i do to relieve this issue until i see doctor. i cant give up my job.
