Modern approaches to hand carving marble and stone carving require a knowledge of ancient traditional tool techniques and state of the art electric power tools. Jyl Bonaguro, a contemporary sculptor, demonstrates the use of traditional tools such as the tooth chisel, the point chisel, and the rasp, the differences between steel and carbide chisels and the possibilities for power tools in the ancient art of stone sculpture.
"Over twenty years ago, I dreamed of carving a female figure of major stature - a Modern Athena on the scale of Michelangelo’s David out of a single block of marble. It seemed an impossible dream. However, in 2014, a friend offered me some blocks of marble and I began teaching myself how to carve stone. In the ensuing years, I have exhibited and sold works nationally and internationally, along with completing residencies in Italy and Greece. I am currently carving a small scale version and releasing weekly progress videos on social media. The Modern Athena sculpture is about breaking limitations, for myself and anyone." - Jyl Bonaguro
