Look at one of the Waylon Jennings interviews with Letterman,he did the same thing and the dual interview with Waylon and cash is priceless, Letterman seemed intimidated by them.
No Richard, because when you were just a baby or maybe just a gleam in your daddy's eye, folks used to light up on live tv. You wouldn't have punched Hank or anyone else.
Hank Sr. died when I was 3, and Bocephus was born several months before I was born. It seems we grew up together. Hank set the bar, and Bocephus, along with Waylon, Willie, Kris, Cash Etc helped take it to the next level
We did grow up together. I was born 6 months after him and we were next door neighbors. Mom baby sat him and I wouldn't be surprised if we fought over our milk bottles and binkies.
It is very provable. I want to get in contact with him. As I'm not sure he remembers me. But when I show him my birth certificate he will know. But I believe after watching several of his videos' I see he loves his privacy now in his beautiful ranch in the Montana's. If I contacted him, and I even knew howl And we met, then I would throw a milk bottle on the floor and then it would be Country Boy vs. Marine Vietnam Veteran Intel, and may the best man win. And after I pick him up off the floor a few times, we would shake hands and have a great talk. He remembered my mom though. Ex-wives can be mean, and she destroyed the program he signed to "her" not me calling her mom in 1988 in Brownwood, TX backstage. I was there, but thinking of others things like my waterhole. He had blonde hair then combed back. I remember by looking at the program. But memories can never be taken from us now can they. They are out greatest riches.
This interview was after his fall on Ajax Mountain. He has been a great friend and is a hoot. Yes, he was a hell raiser. We would party from dusk till dawn.
This interview was in 1982 when Hank was at the pinnacle of his career musically at age 33, he would probably say 1988 when he won back to back Entertainer of the Year awards. In 1982 he just put out his 2 best albums "The Pressure is on" and "High Notes". "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound" is Hank's third best album.
letterman is a moron; in *MANY* interviews he treats guests lilke sh*t, almost like "let's get done with this quicky", like the producers put an obstacle in the show for him, what a f'n moron he is
in 1969, Hank Jr. performed in front of the school body at my high school in Port St Joe, Florida in the school gymnasium. I remember he sang Proud Mary by CCR. He evolved into a superstar of country music. I encountered him again sometime in the 1980s when he was going bass fishing and stopped at the country store in my small town. I heard that he once owned a beach house on St. George's Island. Bocephus had a nightclub in Panama City, Fl at one time.
Thats a great story i just left from seeing hank at the delaware state fair a couple of hours ago it was the best country concert i have ever been too you seen him in 69 and now i seen him in 22 amazing huh? What suprised me was how many young teenage fans that were there and knew every word to his songs and they all had on hank jr t shirts im 44 and i told myself when i was 16 i will see hank one day and i finally got my chance thats one more check off my bucket list!!
I saw this on Letterman when it originally aired. I've always remembered Hank telling about his fall down the mountain and pointing to all the "plastic" he has now. This was the second time I've ever watched it. What I DIDN'T remember was how nervous and intimidated Letterman seemed to be LOL. Never cared much for Letterman.
I was A big deadhead back in the 80s and I only went to Grateful Dead concert but I always loved Hank Junior and I wish to God I could’ve seen him live when he was in his prime
Dave has always had a fairly good taste in music. Check out Sturgill Simpson and the band doing Life of Sin on the show and listen to what Dave says when the song is over as he joins them on the stage. Pretty original and comical compliment
@@11UncleBooker22 in my opinion, sturgill should’ve kept the three guys playing with him in that video instead of going bluegrass. The guitar player is Laur Joamets from Estonia. Killer player.
umm if you listen closely Hank actually chuckled. This was way before Letterman became a bitter old prick and i don't think he meant it was actually funny.
Yeah, I took it as David trying to lighten the mood. I don't think Hank took offense to it either. That was back when people weren't so easily offended.
Not only was he having that, he actually laughed. People smoked on TV all the time back then. Dave was on after Johnny Carson, and Johnny often smoked a cigarette while he interviewed his guest. Bocephus lighting up a cigarette when they went to a commercial break meant nothing. Letterman's joke was to lighten the mood, which it certainly did.
I saw Hank Jr. in Hampton, Va Double Eagle Tour.............the Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for him.....back in the late '80s.........those were the days.............later........ol Big Sid

5:41 Hank just breaks out a pack of smokes and lights one up as they go to commercial. Gotta love Hank. I would never want to promote smoking but I'd also never tell Hank to put it out. LEGEND!
Wow, David Letterman really wasn't a good interviewer at this stage, unless he just didn't dig the "country boy". He just cuts Hank off and doesn't let him answer the questions fully. Letterman obviously doesn't get Hank's references to his songs, he just glides over them and proceeds to the next question. It seems more like an assignment that Letterman had to do and just wanted to get over with. No wonder Hank doesn't think too highly of New York.
@@notsosilentmajority1 Don’t give up. There’s plenty of good ones on the rise. Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, The Reeves Brothers Band, Charley Crockett, Tyler Childers, Vincent Neil Emerson. It’s all over the place!
Hey Buzz I didnt get that impression of Letterman at all. To me he seemed interested and fascinated w/ Hank' s life. They dont have much time so sometimes they gotta push the subject along. But whatever. Hank JR is just as important to country music or more so than his Dad. Hey really forged his own music and sound. You dont need a damn video to see its Hank JR singing. Just his voice on the radio. Thats a true SPECIAL legendary/artist. Cash, Jones, Haggard, Jennings, Nelson etc............
Agreed, I think he just wanted to get every bit of information on him as he could, people seem to be confusing true interest with rudeness, joke was an attempt to keep Hank from getting too emotional, I have done the same thing myself when you hear a story and they are getting shaky and quiet..... oh...ok, well shit brother... lets go grab another whisky...

“Bocephus”. I used to listen to Hank Jr. non stop on 7 hour road trips up to the family cabin in North Wisconsin and then spend the next 2 weeks listening to MORE Hank, Waylon, Willie and Cash. Hank Jr. didn’t give a damn. By the time this interview happened he had already been through enough to write a book about it. You could tell Dave was uneasy. “Why don’t you leave that boy alone. Let him sing his song.”
I was only born in 2000 long after this era of country but I wish todays country was as badass as ole Hank Waylon Willie and such. Instead of the pop shit on radio now
It was good to see Hank Jr back on MNF...about time...even though it was a watered down version and sang at half time it sent a message...I'm sure some of the players will take a knee to this decision...
