This is a follow up to our earlier video about the age old freezer trick for recovering data from a failed hard disk. You can find the first video here: • Putting A Hard Drive I...
This video is another example of why it's a bad idea to put your hard drive in the freezer for data recovery. This time we used a sealed hard drive (no breather hole) and a desiccant (to reduce moisture). We tried to eliminate as many outside factors as possible that were brought up in our first video.
Just a note, we aren't posting these freezer videos as a scare tactic, or a way to drum up business. This do-it-yourself method has been popular on the Internet for many years, and in many cases it can make a bad situation even worse. We want to show you why this is such a bad idea, and exactly what it does to the inside of the drive. Hard drives inherently have extremely low tolerances to imperfections or debris on the platter surfaces. This means anything (including microscopic ice crystals) can damage the heads once the drive is powered up. This can then lead to damage to the platter surface which will render the data unrecoverable.
If you have critical data that you've lost due to a head crash, then you need to seek out the help of a professional data recovery company. It doesn't have to be our company, but do your research and find a reputable firm that has the experience and knowledge needed to successfully recover your data.

My husband was able to revive my hard drive with the freezer method and I’m so glad he did!! Wive’s tale, myth, whatever- if it’s dead and you’re going to lose everything, why not try it?? Not GOOD to do? Why not? If it’s dead, it’s dead and you’re going to lose it anyways. I do know that hubby left it in the freezer for about three days. Maybe that’s what did it cause I was sure praying for a resurrection! 😂

I just tried it out of boredom, and no luck at all. Drive is ice cold to the touch, but it still clicks sadly. It's fine since it's not critical data that was lost on it+I had backups, but I figured I would give it a shot

P.D. And as someone said in your past video, I would probably take out the PCB first, submerse the drive in 100% alcohol and freeze it, let the alcohol evaporate, wrap the drive in paper towel and put it in a bag of rice to let the rice absorb any moister left to then power on the drive... I still got some hard disks left since im sort of a computer technician and I work with computers a lot, I may try it out some day and record it, what do you think?

You do realize that isopropyl alcohol has to be around -100F to freeze right? That's substantially colder than a home freezer.

1. The freezer trick ONLY works on seized spindles. (Very common problem with old Seagate and Maxtor drives). 2. You put the PSU and USB -> SATA/PATA adapter in the freezer WITH the drive. 3. The freezer trick is, was, and always has been a Hail-Mary fix.

Yup and if that doesnt work on the spindle try using a hot air rework station to heat the spindle motor from that bottom (actually try this before putting them in the freezer).

+Jay Walt and besides non of my clients have ever considered doing a data recovery from a "reputable company" when they find out the price. Theyll pay me $40 for me to try my best and Ive been about 75% successful.

Great video, but I wouldn't power it on just after I take it out of the freezer I would wait like 3-5 days to let all the water dry out and then test it if it works or not... My drive just died a week ago and I went and put it on the freezer since I didn't have any critical data on the drive (most of my data I save them on the cloud :3) and it has been about 5 days that I havent plug it in so... I may do a video showing if it work out or not :)

Why not wait for it to warm up before trying to boot it? Not saying this method is a good idea (it seems pretty stupid) but not running it when it's at room temperature is just proving that a freezer-temperature HD doesn't work, not necessarily that freezing it causes damage.

Dawie Smith The "theory" behind freezing a hard drive is that a clicking/dead drive will be operational again after it has been frozen. So when most people attempt this technique, they do so right after they have removed the drive from the freezer. We are simply highlighting why this is a bad idea. In most cases, freezing a drive and then allowing it to sit long enough to come up to room temperature will not necessarily harm anything, but it defeats the supposed advantages of operating the drive in an extremely cold state. Even still, condensation does form on the platters, and even freezing and allowing it to come up to room temp can cause significant problem due to the moisture that will have condensed on the metal surfaces inside the drive.

lol im doing this to my seagate click2 or tick2 sound every 5 second and slow boot with no blinking led on hdd indicator i force turn off my pc,first i warping it with 3 layer plastics and bubble, i´m put the disk not in freezer room but in vegs room on bottom of refrigerator and i keep in 1 hours take it out and let it in room temperature 1 day and tomorrow do it again 1 hours and take out disk, let it in room temp 1 day after that, wrapped out,im test and it works ! Hdd can boot normally windows repairing self in chkdsk and running normal its like nothing happened on that disk 🤣 i try to stress test that disk playing game etc still work normal....

Dude. I modified a damaged HDD. It had 2 platters I scratched one side of the top platter. I removed one platter. Will it WORK?!
