Each data recovery case we get in is unique. In this case, we are repairing a hard drive with failed heads and having to incorporate multiple solutions to finally recover the customer's data. Hard drive failure can lead to permanent data loss if not handled correctly. By utilizing Deepspar Imagers and PC3000 by Ace Laboratories, we are able to be persistent enough to recover the data needed from the hard drive.

I have an HDD with the arms continuously bouncing off the disk. the disk spins and the arms TRY to move over the disk but they seem to hit a part of the disk, bounce off, and try again several times before the disk finally stops and fails. Any tips? Am I screwed?

Just out of interest, how would you recover data from one of those new helium filled hard drives that are welded shut?

We have worked with a couple of those on our own just to check them out, but at this time they are going to be more trouble than they are worth. You won't find many companies willing to work on them for quite a while.

@@acsdata Can I send it to you for a 2nd look? i snagged the USB cord which which sent the drive to the floor. before plugging it back in, I noticed the plug was off center. I plugged it in and got nothing and quickly unplugged it. Never plugging it in again. It is full of videos i wanted to use for a documentary showing people how I that is paralyzed from the chest down, tamed feral kittens and our lives together. Most of the video is a years worth of security video of my interactions with the cats and themselves. I sent the drive to a recovery place back in early March and finally found out last week they couldn't recover the data. i couldn't understand exactly what was the problem because of his poor english, but something about damaged platter and it would read then stop. I would like to send the drive to you to learn exactly what is wrong and if you can recover any of the data. some would be better than none.

Thank you very much ,a question: is there any other solution to recover a Toshiba 500 GB that has fallen down from my desk, not passing by Dos system,a software,phone call,or somethng else...
@acsdata
@acsdata 4 года назад
If the drive fell, there's a good chance the heads are damaged. A repair will most likely be necessary.

Don't take me wrong... i'm just curious i don't want be polemic.. If for this drive the target was to replace the head sliders why did you disassembled also the pcb board of the donor? I mean it was necessary for the recovery of this drive or just for other purposes like resell or increase the inventory for other future recoveries? And why did you used 2 piece of plastic to separate the magnetic head sliders instead of using head combs? Because it's more cost effective solution since head combs are expensive and hard to find? or i miss something else? Last question: after swapping the arm actuator theoretically the drive shouldn't work as before? i mean if i swap the arm actuator with a donor and simply plug the drive in the computer i wouldn't see the drive on my desktop and wouldn't be the file readable wihtout mandatorily using deepspar/pc3000 or other softwares tools to extrapolate data? I mean what would happen if after a swap i try to plug the drive directly in the computer? i won't see any data or i will see some part good and some corrupted? i mean what would be the best or worst scenario? thanks for the time and eventually for a reply :)

How do you know what the problem is with the hard drives you get? Like if its not the controller board that is telling the heads to read incorrectly or not function like they should? I am just curious.
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
Most of the diagnostics we use come from having terminal access to the controller board. In Seagate drives for example, you can see the terminal output as the drive has power applied to it and depending on the error you have, you can see what the root cause is. Also, you can run head tests on each individual head. That way if only one is bad, you can image the remaining good heads. Swap out the head assembly and come back and image the platter that the failed head couldn't read.
@cdos9186
@cdos9186 5 лет назад
That's pretty cool! I didn't know that you can only read from a individual head and get the data off of it like that, you have some really nice tools that you use to get data off the hard drives you get. What do you think would happen if you plugged the drive into a computer or laptop and tried to boot off of it wouldn't it be easier that way to get the data off of it?

Hello. As someone, who understand inner architecture of hard drive, and stuff around platters/heads, why do you think, multi-platter drives are usually faster, than single platter? Example... 500GB drive with 1 platter, with density 500GB/platter, is slower, than 2 platter 500 GB drive, with 2x 250GB/platter. I saw differance in access time from 15 ms to 19 ms (for 1 platter drive). But sequential write/read are actually faster for 1 platter drive, but it's because of platter density. (the more dense platter, the more data can be read for 1 rotation, so it's obviously faster because of platter density) But... when you have same platter density, so for example 500GB 1 platter, and 1TB 2 platter, even sequential write/read is faster, for 2 platter. How it is possible, when head can read only one platter at a time? Why is 2-platter drive faster in seq. read/write, when it can read/write only one platter at a time? Can you explain please with hardware knowledge, which you have about hard drives inner mechanics? Noone was able to explain this to me yet.
@acsdata
@acsdata 5 лет назад
It doesn't necessarily mean that it is reading/writing to one platter at a time. Data is mapped out and split up a few thousand sectors at a time across all platter surfaces. Anything more than a few kb in size is most likely going to be stored on multiple surfaces, so all of the heads can actually read and write nearly simultaneously as the data is being accessed.

Just a typical head failure. Nothing too crazy with this one.

just want to tell stories of what happened to me. i got terrible nightmare today... my toshiba 2.5" HDD 700gb just got "head failure" and there's no way to rescue it except i spend about $1000 to restore the data (to another drive). i'm not talking about porn or any content i store on it (and im sure no one even will think about it either lol), i have tons of sensitive data. i store all my account password (in an excel), personal video and photos i backup from my phone, all saved data from photoshop, sony vegas, Paid program, paid movies, paid tv series (i wonder if i can get those without rebuying them), several important video tutorials and very helpful website i save in an html file, paid content i have bought around web.... pretty much everything i gather in past 10 years. i know it's head failure because when i opened it myself (after i call and learn from expert of course) the head moving back and forth cause clicking and beeping (keeps going and never end). the platter seems spinning normal, the head didn't even stuck or bump, or whatever. and this expert didnt even know what really happened until he see it. so i came to his office and yes it's a head failure. probably broken circuit board. and because its broken the head can no longer read data even the HDD world fine. he offer me about $300 for the services to see if he can fix the HDD itself. he said the probability is 40% because maybe the broken head cause another damage to the platter without knowing it. he offers me another option to replace the board with the new parts cost $500 (price for HDD under 1TB), probability 80% if the platter is not damaged. some data may already corrupted during my self-fix attempt. and another option is he offer me $700 for restore all latest active data (he said even if the actual data already corrupted he can restore it), and a piece of HDD or SSD cost $140 to back them up. guess i a broke guy who can just gave up on all my data. i keep it in case i have enough money to restore them. goodbye to my files =(

I have a question about inspecting the heads and cleaning the disk surface before proceeding, so if you have removed the heads, then why not first inspect them for discoloration from impact with the rotating platters. Second, after you determine which heads are at fault then why have you not attempted to clean the surface on the impacted surface. Using nitrogen gas to blow off any dislodged particles will not contaminate or damage the surface any further plus protecting the new heads you have installed. Time wise, this is a small investment, as you are limiting any future damage caused by contaminated head impacts that can be caused by the aerodynamics distortions of the flying heads from the loosened particles. bwireman
