Hartland Peninsula, in the County of Devon, United Kingdom is a remote rural area in the South West of England. Due to it being the closest UK Mainland point to the remote Island of Lundy, it is home to a small but busy commercial Heliport that serves the island of Lundy.
This is a video in two halves: the first half is a user guide to the Hartland Heliport, how to get here and the procedures you need to know for travelling to the island of Lundy. The second half of the video caters to those who wish to explore the wild and history rich Hartland Peninsula.
We will look at how one of the UK's principal Air Traffic Control Radar Sites, which was once a Cold War ROTOR Radar Station tasked with detecting inbound Soviet Nuclear Bombers in the 1950s.
Look at an 1870s Victorian era Lighthouse now precariously crumbling into the sea.
A 1982 shipwreck from 40 years ago that is still visible on the shoreline.
And finally tell the story of a horrendous World War One war crime against a hospital ship that shocked the Western World in 1918, all within sight of this the present day Hartland Point.

I remember as a kid in the 70's we were able to walk down to the Lighthouse and even go inside - for free! Thanks for the film.

Thanks for this, I flew from here thirty odd years ago when I spent a week on Lundy, it has certainly poshed up since then as the facilities back then was literally a garden shed and check in involved getting up close and personal with a set of bathroom scales. Our flight was one of the last before the service was suspended for a time as the helicopter service was withdrawn due to the twin engined machine needed being taken out of service with no replacement, the operator reckoned that the cost of a replacement wasn’t economically viable. Happy times, and if you fancy a week or so on Lundy the Landmark Trust will happily host you.

Spent many holidays staying in the Heartland point lighthouse back in the Sixties when my Uncle Frank was a keeper then again in the early eighties when my cousin Colin was a lighthouse keeper there, didn’t get much sleep when the foghorn was blowing.

Fascinating, stayed locally (about 25 minutes walk away)for several summers, truely beautiful part of the country. The last section on the lighthouse brought a wry smile as I came to your site from your video on the Soviet RTGs for their remote lighthouses😁
