Not long after he retired Hartnell was in an interview and he was asked how long he thought the show could go on. Hartnell said that Doctor Who could quite possibly go on forever... And that comment with this scene always, always gives me chills~

This one hit me in the feels. William Hartnell, upon accepting the role of The Doctor, thought that it would just be a kids show, that it wouldn't last very long, but admitted that when he left because of health reasons, he didn't want to leave because he fell in love with Doctor Who and hoped it stayed around as long as possible. If only he could see what it's become today, what he helped to create.
@its-morbintime
@its-morbintime 9 лет назад
I heard the main reason he did it was because he wanted to be in something his Grandkids could know him from. Although, the one bit of Doctor Who trivia that always makes me laugh is that Patrick Troughton was convinced that after he took over from William Hartnell, the show would last 6 weeks after that, at best and while I could see where he was coming from...he could not have been more wrong.
@retnavybrat
@retnavybrat 9 лет назад
***** I can't remember where I originally heard this, but someone said that we Whovians really owe more to Troughton than Hartnell (as brilliant as he was) because if Troughton didn't succeed as the Doctor, we wouldn't be still watching the show after 50 plus years.
@jj_b5400

retnavybrat If Hartnell didn't succeed, then Troughton would never have been given the role at all and the show would have been cancelled, so I don't see where you're coming from.
@its-morbintime
@its-morbintime 9 лет назад
retnavybrat It goes both ways for both Troughton AND Hartnell for me. I mean Hartnell MADE the show work. After the original serial the BBC were considering pulling the plug then and there. Then they aired a second serial for them under the condition that they'd only make 4...that one little serial (The Daleks) spawned a viewing audience of 10 million people so after that, there was no way the BBC were going to axe the show. Hartnell carried the show for 3 years battling health issues and a 40 week shooting schedule. Originally, he never wanted to leave but he knew he couldn't keep it up. Troughton had the more to prove in the role, mainly because his entire presence revolved around a then gimmick of Regeneration (although it wouldn't be until the 70's til they called it that) and he had to not only deliver something new as an actor (he had the mentality that if he was taking over from Hartnell, he wouldn't do just the same thing he did because he was a fan of the show) but also prove to the audience that yes, that WAS the Doctor they knew and loved which made him taking over the role more of a gamble than any other actor. So honestly, no matter what, Whovians owe a lot to both actors for having the show they know and love today.
@kommo1
@kommo1 9 лет назад
***** That goes for almost every doctor. If any off the old doctors flopped, the show would have ended. I think it was the Tennant era, which carried the show to the solid ground its now standing on. Now we could have a new regeneration every year, because off bad doctors and the series would still continue. That being said. Hartnell shaped the doctors personality very freely, which made it very easy for others to take over. The Doctor is an idea off principle and ideals and not a finite character. That way you "only" have to filter your own personality through these ideals and principles to create a new authentic version off the doctor.

I'm so glad this happened with Matt Smith as the Doctor. There's just something about the doe-eyed expression he gives Hartnell that an older actor couldn't have managed. He's a young, fairly unknown actor, proud to be taking on the legacy Hartnell left but also slightly terrified that he won't do it justice. Smith gives him a look of pure awe and it's perfect. The best moment of the 50th anniversary bar none.
@rennythespaceguy7285
@rennythespaceguy7285 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, you've put it perfectly. Don't think it's about age though, while I like that they did it, the new version with a similarly aged actor doesn't have this. I think the temptation with a moment like this is to play it knowingly like Ncuti does, and while that's very charming and oozes charisma I don't think it's quite as emotionally resonate as Smith playing it with an unflinching awe for his predecessor

Orlando Soto Leyton How the hell did capaldi destroy the doctor? His acting is sensationnal. The whole last series had a not that good feeling to it because of choices in scenario and in the whole idea of the message Moffat wanted to send. Orlando Soto Leyton Or people stuck in the Classic Series. I don't think Peter Capaldi destroyed the Doctor, though, I think Steven Moffat is destroying Peter Capaldi's Doctor. In a way that he never imagined, William Hartnell became immortal. He will always be the Doctor and his face will be remembered longer than anything else that the BBC has produced, before or since. Doctor Who transcends beyond any "normal" tv show, and it even transcends the art form of entertainment itself, and has become something that is more precious and powerful than anything anyone ever imagined. Hartnell as the Doctor will be one of the faces that will live on throughout your life, my life, and even the lives of our children. I hope that at some point in his life, Hartnell was able, if only a moment, to look back and get a glimpse of what he started, what continues, and the influence that the Doctor has had in every nation around the world. Being the Doctor is not a mere "role", it is an event that changes your life forever, because from that moment on you WILL live forever. I hope Hartnell was able to glimpse this truth, and to find solace from it. He was the first, and not just a doctor, but THE Doctor...The Original.

Look carefully at his close up, when he looks down. Look at his body. You can clearly see he isn't standing behind it. Part of the top of the console is behind him not in front. He was either added in later or they've digitally altered the shot for some reason. It would have been great to see him again in The Power of The Doctor (along with someone recreating Jon Pertwee, and ofcourse Tom. A pity that he was unavailable) maybe someday we will see him again in this role - If David Bradley can come back to Doctor Who after Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, Colin Baker after Arc of Infinity, Peter Capaldi after Fires of Pompeii, then Reece Shearsmith can definitely come back after Sleep No More.

This scene was so poignant. One of the things I truly love about Doctor Who is its generational appeal, and that was also beautifully captured here. I was in my preteens when the series relaunched with Christopher Eccleston. I watched the first episode because my dad told me he loved the show when he was a child (Tom Baker years) and insisted I would love it too. Of course, I did. About a year later my grandfather saw me reading Doctor Who Magazine and told me he watched it in his younger days, he said 'it was black and white then, and Doctor Who was my age'. At 12 years old discovering my grandfather watched Doctor Who was the coolest thing in the world!

I love the scene. I really do. I love that he imagines a brief look into the future and doesn't see a second or third Doctor, but an ELEVENTH. (Yes, I know, I know, the War Doctor is really Eleven, yadda yadda. I don't want to get into that.) Honestly, and I know this would've been difficult to pull off, but I think the scene would've been more powerful if they could have gotten ALL the future Doctors lined up with Matt Smith. Like Troughton, they could have used other actors for the roles and show them all in their prime. In an ideal world, Eccelston would be standing with them, too. Another controversial thing to mention. Anyway, my point is, I think it would've been just a little more powerful to see the full lineage of The Doctor's future in front of him rather than just whoever happened to be latest Doctor at that particular moment.

Guilherme Gusmão I prefer to think of Hurt as 8.5, since it's the only time The Doctor has initiated the regeneration process and he's still Eight mentally.

Manuel Sacha This is the part where you should walk away. You're being incredibly rude for absolutely no reason. And as I said, this is the sort of semantic arguments I DIDN'T want to get into. My point was all about why I would've liked this better with all the Doctors lined up together to show the full future, not just Smith.

I don't think it would have worked to have the future incarnations in this scene. Too crowded. Matt Smith who was the incumbent and representing 50 years was enough.

Growing up, my best and oldest friend was a gentleman by the name of Johnny Maynard. Johnny introduced me to Doctor Who to some extent and had stories about the show to tell me. He gave me magazines and newspaper clippings about it. Johnny was a navy man, and his best friend while in the navy went into acting later. His best friend was a gentleman by the name of William Hartnell. "The First Doctor!" Johnny told me excitedly. ^^ He talked about how stern he was at times and the differences between his performance and the rest of the doctors. I miss Johnny. We lost him a long time ago when I was barely becoming a teenager. I am glad to see that there are still people around who love Hartnell and his performance, enough to honor him, and to keep the spark, the joy, that Doctor Who can and does bring, alive to this day. May it never die out.

I feel very privileged to be one of those lucky ones who watched the Doctor’s first entrance in the junkyard in 1963. People forget that television was still new enough back then that to have a TV set made us feel like we were living in the future. Hartnell’s Doctor was far more complex than later Doctors, and that set of emotional contradictions pulled us into his world. I am sure I was in love with Susan and it was devastating when she left the show but it set up the comings and goings of the companions that is the lifeblood of the various series. The Tardis was much more of a ship back then. We got to see the bedrooms, the galley, the living room, and the computer room. The later TARDIS’s tended to be just the control room, although one Doctor (I forget which) introduce the second control room. But no matter what happenned the two best episodes have always been the first episode, and the first entry f the Daleks and I was lucky to see both when they were first shown.

Paul Forder So it was Mr. Baker. I knew it was one of the earlier Doctor’s, and I can remember what that 2nd control room looked like, but I couldn’t remember who was in it. Thank you for the confirmation that it was real (instead of faulty memory - it was, after all, a long time ago) and identifying the guilty party :)

@@artistjoh Much obliged. I've been interested in Jon Pertwee's doctor since 1974, when I was seven. I still remember the infamous sequence of the plastic armchair that collapsed on & smothered its victim, with the Master being present, from ""Terror of the Autons" (1971). That was a controversial story for its time, & said chilling clip was cut by the censors when it was first broadcast in Australia.(It's on YT.) Patrick Troughton, the 2nd Doctor, is also my second favourite after Pertwee. Pat added a lot of humour to his "cosmic hobo" persona. He lives on in that character. Thank you, Pat. RIP. 😁😁🇬🇧🇬🇧

When I first watched An Adventure in Space and Time, though it was very sad and dramatic, it wasn't until THIS scene where tears were finally shed. Glorious, glorious scene, and I think nobody watching saw it coming. David Bradley did wonderful here, and I certainly wouldn't mind if he can reprise the role again if ever they want to have the First Doctor appear in the show.

This moment makes me cry. You never really will know the true impact you will have on people, especially people you will never meet, and that's poignant for the people who really do touch millions or who are apart of the start of something truly huge and iconic. This little transcendence into past and future works so well for this BBC special. Like the Van Gogh scene in Matt Smith's run, having past artists being able to glimpse at how loved they will be, as well as the people who were truly moved and affected by them being able to communicate that appreciation. It's beautiful.

I love this scene and the scene before it where William Hartnell cries and says "I don't want to go" because it felt very moving. Even I nearly cried. And yes I loved it when Matt Smith appeared because it's like William Hartnell is somehow foreshadowing Doctor Who's longevity. While I think about it, Star Trek will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016. They should do a docudrama movie about how Star Trek was developed and how they launched the original series in 1966.

Am actually wondering if it's deliberate? He seems to have shifted to the exact location that Hartnell is standing when he looks across and sees him - note the position of the cameraman. I could be completely wrong but it could be implying "this is me in the future", and that's why he's standing on the exact spot.. Obviously the shot before and after are difficult to explain .. but I think that's known as TWWW As in Timey-Wimey-Wibbly-Wobbly Lol

@@mohammedshakoor4718 Right before it cuts to Matt Smith's hands, you can see him look down. They obviously meant him to be behind the console but used the wrong backing shot or just didn't bother getting a different view to insert behind him. Either way, it looks terrible. I noticed it the first time I watched the scene and it ruined the moment for me.

I spent about 20 minutes scrolling through the comments, and I'm so pleased to read and feel the love and appreciation for William Hartnell. I've been a fan of Doctor Who since 1980, when I was 15 years old and stumbled upon Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen in a spooky castle a la Dr. Frankenstein. The episode, "The Brain of Morbius." Sara was blinded and felt her way into the lab where Morbius was struggling to rise from the table...and cliffhanger! That's how my adventures with the TARDIS and the Doctor started and it continues. I am now 58 years old and I'm still that enthusiastic teenager who can't get enough of the Doctor. Thank you, William Hartnell, for making this all possible. RIP, good sir.
