Hazard Perception Test Australia (HPT Simulator) 

We thoroughly reviewed the video/situation number 5 in the Victorian HPT simulator, and found it inaccurate and potentially misleading how the HPT participant needs to react. I Just passed my HPT from Joondalup Centre 14th April 2022. This was my first attempt which actually shocked me. Thanks to the few available online practice tests and the youtube videos i watched. Just a few points that may help someone out there: 1. There are 30 questions during the actual test. 2. Make sure you attempt the first 4 practice test questions before going for the actual test. (They let you know if your reaction was correct or not only during these 4.) 3. The test was way easier than the online practice tests i did. (In my oppinion anyway) 4. (VERY IMPORTANT POINT) Pay attention to the picture(thumbnail) shown for each question before clicking attempt, this was very very very helpful for me because i studied the information in the picture before the video started. 5. (VERY IMPORTANT POINT) Think about each video as if you were on the road and actually driving a car. This point really helped me because i reacted to each video as if i was driving and not sitting in an office. 6. (VERY IMPORTANT POINT) On most of the 'click when to turn right videos' just let the video play if it's not safe to turn, But there where 2 video's were the GAP was large enough for me to turn right, so i did click to turn. 7.(VERY IMPORTANT POINT) When asked click when to 'SLOW DOWN' Don't wait for the brake lights to come on, if the car infront of you start getting close to you click to slow down. Only 2 videos where i had to wait for the brake lights to come on, most of them the car slowed down before the brake lights even came on so i clicked the button. 8. On curves, or kangaroo videos, Don't wait to see the curve or Kangaroo, Click the button as soon as you see the yellow sign that shows Curve ahead or kangaroos in area. You may see the sign in the picture shown before the video starts which give you a clue (See point 4). 9. One video had two cars heading the same direction ahead approaching a large pool of rain water on the road. Don't click slow down before the cars hit the puddle of water but also don't wait for your car to drive through the puddle of water, Click 'Slow down' as soon as the first car ahead touches the water. Not before the car ahead touches it but not after the fact. As soon as the first car hits it. Click slow down. 10. Last point please watch as many videos on youtube about HPT as you can, Read the comments too. From each video you will gain 1 or 2 point that can be very helpful. I watch like 13 different videos from online and youtube and i passed on my first attempt. Thank you :) Hope this helps someone out there, Goodluck and let me know how you go. Cheers.

I just did mine yesterday. I am in NSW. You will get 2 questions to practice before the actual test begins. This is the only video I have watched and honestly If you did right with the practice questions from the WA/VIC/SA and go with this video you definitely can pass in one go. I have few questions repeated. To the questions that says you might want to go right depending on the oncoming traffic 99% of the time you will be just sitting in front of the monitor doing nothing cause there will be no right time to take a right turn. You all can do it. Thanks for this video and this is the only thing you need to see and learn for your HPT.

for anyone wondering how the real test compares to the practice one, there are different videos, 25 scenarios total, 45 minute time limit. If it says you are going straight, click when the car in fronts break lights go on, same with tram. If you are turning, dont try to click when there is a small space, wait until you have a giant gap or dont click at all. If any questions just reply to this comment.

I appreciate this video I've been failing for months to get mt P2 but watching this made me more aware of what could happen on the sidelines and timing ect as soon as I went back on I passed! Many thanks this was for QLD HPT as well..

I have passed my Hazard Test first go today. It was very easy. Thanks for your video.

Just did mine in WA 18/2/22, no dramas at all. Lots of the 25 questions were effectively the same, some were repeated with slight variation. Like turning right at lights(about 5 times), turning right to get to the median(probably 4), slowing on country roads, slowing for an intersection/traffic lights a few times and at least 4 of a vehicle (van twice) slowing down. The kangaroo example was there but the roo was on the right side. Thankfully the first example with the waving girl wasn't there. This video and the online examples on WA and VIC roads websites were great at giving a feel for what they want. Thanks 👍

I passed HPT on the 9th of this month. I definitely did wrong with 2 questions relevant to a sudden stop of tram. I heard that for 25 questions， if you react correctly for more than 12 questions, you would pass. My tip is to do the practice questions before the exam starts until you can do them all correct. Another one is once you can see a road sign or brake lights, click the mouse. Don't click it earlier.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I did it! Just to let you know some people are just very good in theory! I passed the test in my country, Iran, with no mistakes and passed the HPT in Australia/Victoria as well just by watching a few videos. But I failed the actual Driver test seven times in my country. I've not taken it yet in Australia but I'm really looking forward to getting my Driver's license finally!

I passed my hazard test 2nd attempt the comments and RU-vid videos really helps .. here’s the tips ... most of the videos specially turning right u don’t need to click the mouse wait until the video finished . Don’t overtake if u see the straight white line let the video finish. In median don’t click the mouse if there’s no chance of going through most of the situation in the test u don’t need to click the mouse . Click the mouse once the brake lights pop up u need to click quick once u see the hazard . If ur tense stop for a while and focus on the test imagine ur riding on it . Stay calm and relax. Goodluck

I’m pretty sure for video 5, it’s actually the mum walking out from the right side, not the kid. Not to sure but you click as soon as the mum comes close to the road, or comes around her car

I think the hazard in video 5 is the woman on the right side, walking behind the car. It's a hazard because she wasn't looking behind and we are not sure at first whether she would cross the street or not

You're struggling at 2:10 because you're looking at the wrong pedestrian. You're waiting for the woman on the right to wave before clicking. But you're supposed to click about 3 seconds earlier when the child on the left waves. That's a warning that the child might be about to cross the road. They put the woman in a red shirt so you focus on her, to test if you're actually paying attention to your surroundings.

I just don’t think Hazards is very useful or accurate. It’s not the same as sitting in a car and reacting to a situation. The timing and everything sitting down in an office is off and doesn’t reflect the timing of a real life situation. It doesn’t help that when I did it they were still using 90’s computers that took forever to load.

I was so excited because I was ready and confident but when the real clips on the test started I was like I have no idea cause I didn’t practice these. So I was legit mad and sad the whole day today

I loved your video . i have failed the WA HPT 7 times so i tried visiting another venue for the test on a weekend . I noted the places i went wrong and to my bad luck i made the same mistakes at the new test centre . i am now developing a phobia. Please help me . the areas if improvement needed are as follows: slowing down to avoid rear ending right turn at intersection slowing down whilst travelling ahead slowing down on a country road slowing down to avoid pedestrians before an intersection slowing down to avoid pedestrians slowing down to avoid cyclists The person conducting the tests said i was over cautious .How can i practice ,Please help me with more of your videos they look like the one from the test.

I did my hazards today and failed. Been practicing for months and been getting them all right but the practice ones are not the same as the actual ones on the test so I was struggling !! I’m in WA and the test clips were the ones on this video and idk how to access these practice clips

I took mine today and failed. It is so hard to pass this test. I do well when I am driving and also on the online practice test. It is very frustrating. There are 25 questions, at the end of the test they will only tell u if you pass or not (will not tell you how many questions you got right and wrong). There is a general feedback at the end. I don't know what to do.

How many questions should you get right to pass the test ?

Hey just wondering what it says when u pass your hazard perception test bc did mine today and accidentally missed the writing thsts say if u pass or not and only got to read the part that says continue to reach 50 hrs driving time and do 5 hrs night any help would be great

I haven't done this practice. First time watching it. I would say about "time reaction" I dont know how is the test, yet, but assuming watching the video and then to click the mouse to wichever action, the time reaction would be late!! for the obvious reason to move the mouse and then clicking; while using the keyboards up. down, left and right and space, the user will have faster reaction, the same way behaviour for gamers, keyboard is faster than mouse to take action

In video3, you will hear some noise from the road left side then you supposed to click the mouse

I just passed my hazard test and the key for me is watch your speed limit and only click it when u see the hazard in front of u if there is anyone and when turning right don't always click it

The HPT simulator on the WA website is so bad. You can't even do it full screen so you can't really see what's going on.

Does anyone know what to do with the median strip ? Aahhhhh Since WA is in lockdown atm I can’t go do the test but I’m practicing during lockdown as much as I can! Any advice for the HPT test so I can pass. Cause I failed the first one

Thats a set up . They do it so you keep failing and keep paying for another test only to fail again on tricky questions like this .. i am going for my HPT in NSW in like 9 days and i have been practicing online and apparently in NSW we have the easiest test . I am really looking forward to it 😊.. great educational video

i waited .05 seconds too long on the cycling one and then the video ended. i was waiting for the car to come out of the corner before i clicked. apparently they want people to overtake on a mountain pass whilst coming out of a corner.

if I fail my first attempt in WA how long do I need to wait before I can re-sit it?

I did my hazard test yesterday, failed it. I dont even know which questions I got wrong. I drive well and confidently, also did lots of hazard practice online, all of which my answers, I got correctly. Don't know, what went wrong?

For anyone in NSW, they use some of the practice videos in the real thing. As long as you know the all practice videos well, you will pass

3x failed and i don't know what to do. and don't tell which one is wrong answer.

In these CGI video's you are directed to watch unlike in or on a vehicle where your eyes should be everywhere NOT just aimed in one direction. No wonder the younger drivers of today are only looking to one spot, not for possible pedestrians as well as oncoming traffic, traffic beside or behind or to the left or right!!! Having been a professional driver I see the one where the person who has got out of the car and walking around on the roadway as a hazard 1st and that is where the reaction should be taken!! The body language of the car driver outside the car should be a giveaway as to the pedestrians intentions but only if they see them attempting to cross the road. 2nd the possibility of the pedestrian behind the van being stupid enough to walk out onto the roadway without looking I find this is taking away responsibility of the pedestrian to be aware of traffic. During my younger years while riding a motorbike I had such a situation where a woman holding hands with her young son walking along the footpath out of my sight walked out from in front of a double parked Butchers truck. There was minimal time to brake even at less than 10kph I did and clipped the woman with the mirror and left handle bar. The policeman on point duty at the intersection did not see the accident nor had he noticed the double parked butchers truck which had moved on by the time the policeman came to the scene not 40mt away. He proceeded to charge me, thankfully the motorist behind me who also had to brake witnessed the instance and gave evidence in my favour. Even the woman told the truth thank goodness slight injuries when she fell but ok after a hospital visit.The body language of the car driver outside the car should be a giveaway as to the pedestrians intentions but only if they see them attempting to cross the road.

It’s a money making system, I think. I don’t think even 10 yrs experienced will pass in one go.. 😢

This test is bullshit I feel. I reckon I aced it but apparently not! and forking up 20 dollars per attempted is a bit rich too.

For anyone wondering as of 28/9/21 the hazard test can now be completed ONLINE through your own computer . Each test/scenarios consist of 25 question which you must aim to have AT LEAST 13 questions correct to PASS. You will need to pay for the test each time, (Only can attempt two test a day if fail). My tip would be read the question and understand what the intentions of the driver are doing and locate possible hazard in advance: For example my test on the computer before the actual video or particular scenario start, it froze on a frame where I could clearly see the puddle on the highway so I know in advance the hazard before when I click the video to play and click again to locate the hazard. My other example like the first one in another question, it popped up with white vans on red break lights so I know what the hazard is already before playing the video then clicking again to slow down. You have 45m to complete the test. GOODLUCK
