Could I suggest a test? Would be really interesting to compare latency of native Walksnail goggles vs. Walksnail goggles HDMI out piped into HDZero goggles. The difference would presumably be the HDMI encoding component.

Hi Chris, great video. I'm also already a fan of AOS labs. What I find curious is that the difference between the first pixel latency of the Sky o4x at 720p60 and the HD-Zero Goggles at 720p100 is lower than the difference between 720p60 and 720p100 on the Avatar Goggles themselves. Maybe a HDMI input latency measurement for both of them would be interesting after all. There's actually a nice Raspberry Pi project called "pi lag tester" that turns on an LED on a Raspberry Pi Zero as it changes the image on the HDMI out. I have used it to measure the (very high) input latency of my Skyzone Cobra X V2s. If you ask me, the HDMI input lag would also be interesting data for AOS labs (at least I'm curious). I'm happy to share the link (I guess I'm not allowed to do it directly here) if you're interested, but it's also easy to google. The original article is on blogspot.

Awesome comparison. That explains why so many reviewers felt a massive improvement in latency when switching to high framerate mode on the VRX with HDZero goggles. I'm really pleased with this result because it shows my Sky04x is sufficient for the AvatarVRX and there isn't much to be gained from upgrading to HDZero goggles. ❤️

Almost 80ms for AvatarVRX+HDZero, mother of god that’s crazy! And that’s best case scenario before signal issues create more latency? This is probably why I killed my WalkSnail test quad on the second flight… lol! Thanks for your quality videos Chris! p.s. People are loving that end of video sound engineering … haha!
@ikerpere9225
@ikerpere9225 Год назад
Something has to be wrong about that... Either the numbers do not represent ms or something's wrong about his own VRX. I tested myself the latency with my Walksnail VRX and my Eachine EV200D (very budget goggles, so I don't think they'd have less hdmi latency than hdzero), and I'm getting about 50ms of latency, consistently. Throughout different tests, I've seen as low as 46ms and as high as 53
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy Год назад
@@ikerpere9225 yea, I don’t know. I’m inclined to believe Chris as he’s established his credibility, but agreed it seems crazy. Will be interesting to see an update once HDZero finalizes the HDMI input firmware tweaks. How are you measuring latency? Is it based on the OSD readout? Because I believe that’s just measuring from VTX to VRX, Chris is measuring Camera Lens to Goggle lens here.
@ikerpere9225
@ikerpere9225 Год назад
@@GiantAntCowboy Yeah, I know. I also believe Chris, I'm not blaming him, I just think something might be wrong, possibly not his methodology. I've tested with 240fps recording on a gopro and with 480fps recording on my phone, counting frames from a led turning on in front of the camera vs in the goggles. It's usually around 20ms more than what the OSD says, in my case. I guess that would depend on the HDMI latency on each goggles
@GiantAntCowboy
@GiantAntCowboy Год назад
@@ikerpere9225 ok, hmm very interesting... well I’m hoping to have my new WalkSnail setup tomorrow. Not sure if you watch my videos, but I killed my 1s WS setup on the 2nd flight and well long story short… the proper Micro Version should arrive tomorrow, excited to continue testing with the HDzero Goggles and to do some comparisons against my HDZ setups. This dramatic range of latency should be fairly obvious when comparing systems back to back. So we’ll see!

These are the types of Rosser videos I love most; Testing things we wish we could do. This one was especially nice and concise. Also, appreciate the new test results webpage. A true contributor and great mind for FPV’s future. Have to comment about whatever that voice thing that’s going on at the end of the video. Kinda funny and weird, but it was actually a pleasant-to-the-ear voice. Only constructive criticism would be that often times you’re reading a script and robotic which can be disengaging during your presentation. When you’re talking about AOS Labs, something you’re clearly excited about, the pace in your voice picks up and it makes the viewer excited as well. If somehow you can maintain that pace or close to it in words per minute, you sound much more relatable and engaging. Please don’t be all fake and extra about it, but I think some subtle changes can really make your videos reach to a larger audience. Sorry, not sure how actively you’re working on it or care, but from a superficial perspective, your videos have improved a lot and I want it to keep improving. Keep up the great work Mr Chris Rosser!

The latency of Walksnail is actually surprisingly high in some modes, and that's just the bench, not counting for the variability in real life. This is much better than those spreadsheets!

Would(n't?) it be possible for the Walksnail people to cut down the 60fps latency by running the pipeline at 120fps and outputting only every 2nd frame? The jitter will be high maybe.. but.. seems like an interesting experiment for them to try.
@FlyingBuzzard
@FlyingBuzzard 8 месяцев назад
Why doesn't anyone show the many goggles/systems through the goggle lens in REAL time in flight to see how much latency is noticeable while flying in each goggle/system being used ? these tests show a lot and the differences BUT how does that affect what one SEE's in the goggle in flight. Is it really that noticeable to cause the operator a issue or do most never notice it at all ?

Would you be able to confirm the Walksnail VRX HDMI output latency with a second device such as a gaming monitor? Isnt the latency problem through HDMI practically unsolvable? According to this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jAGp0JfNof8.html, there is 1frame delay between HDMI input and HDMI output at 60fps - so basically 17ms latency. (Should be better at 100fps, theoretically 10ms, but there is more bitrate so who knows). So when standard latency of Walksnail system is 30 - 40ish ms, then at 60fps HDMI adds 50% of latency :(

Now I can fly like a madman on HDzero.... And then slow it down somewhat and just enjoy the scenery with the superior image quality range and penetration of Walksnail. I predict the opposite of what your saying...namely predicting only two hd systems will survive All three will survive but the Hdzero/Walksnail will be the set up of choice for many going forward especially newcomers to the hobby. In so many countries now the weight of drones because of over regulation is coming down and again here Walksnail has the advantage over DJI with their 1s Vtx. The future is say is bright for all three systems.....

@@gmivisualsjason3729 after testing them all, I carry the same stuff as you… I foresee it only getting more popular when the word gets out, and people try it, and realize that the Avatar system is super flexible and with superior flight feel. Still 9/10 times I’m on HDZero and the Runcam90, as it is my happy place, but Avatar has a tangible flight quality to it, that looses only to the picture quality of O3… having stripped down 4 O3s the weight is still 10 grams above everyone else, so on sub 70 gram quads, it’s just not gonna work. Sub250 IS viable on a stripped down O3 though, not the most fun or powerful, as you can literally have twice the power otherwise… but it is serviceable and that’s all that really matters to the average Joe. Nobody talks about how heavy these goggles are with all the modules (analog + walksnail vrx). 580 grams without 2 antennas. In real life, impossible to fly with unless you are sat on a chair and you are facing up. Otherwise they slide on your face, dig into your nose and overall very uncomfy during flying. If you adjust the head strap to be tighter you get headaches after 2 packs. Battery was on a lead. For reference: walksnail goggles with all antennas- 341gr hdo goggles with analog module and two antennas- 270gr skyzone 04x goggles with 2 antennas- 334gr hdzero goggles with two antennas and analog expansion - 450gr walknsnail vrx module (4 antennas)- 95gr sharkbyte vrx module (2 antennas)- 75gr Apart from that, build quality is good but not to the level of the skyzone's o4x / walksnail / dji. Optics, menu, adjustments are brilliant.
@wesley4713
@wesley4713 Год назад
I don’t know why you’d have all 3 modules on all the time. I have wondered about the weight and face feel. It’s not only extra weight but extra weight furthest from the face which is going to pull with leverage. I wonder if you can mount the vrx on the back strap and use antenna cables (mod the vrx) to bring them to the front rail.but maybe that’s not practical.

@@wesley4713 analog module is fitted with a screw that it s find under the rx module. Not having that screw makes the entire adaptor pops off easily. The walksnail avatar can pe hold in place with double sticky tape, yes you can remove it every time you are not using it but i normally fly at least two systems on a session. Taking off and on all time increases the chances of damaging something and creates waste. i guess the only feasible option would be to have light antennas and remove all the antennas that are not needed. Another option would to print an adapter that keeps the walksnail module on the top of the goggles, just to shift the weight a bit closer to the face.
