Sometimes horses come to us with past training that impedes them from connecting with us in the present. This horse struggled with understanding how to control pressures and believed he needed to freeze to handle them. Josh talks about some of the ways we can help these kinds of horses connect and rewrite their beliefs about pressure.

Love the analogy between us not saying something and letting it build until it blows! Perfect explanation

The perfectly timed release of the pressure conveys to the horse that he can control the pressure. This makes it seem like it's his idea. Perfect. The horses are easy because their responses are pure, genuine, and honest. They never lie or try to deceive us. They are pure joy to work with! It's the two legged ones who are the challenge. The horses I have worked with were sometimes labeled bad, or naughty, as if they had devious intentions. It is NEVER the horse's fault. He/ she is just being a horse and looking for the release of pressure..... any pressure. So, what ever happened at the moment the pressure went away, is what the horse learned to do. No deliberate naughtiness.

Josh, can you explain WHY it is not desirable for the horse to just stand there and not appear to react to the pressure? I think that is what a lot of people aim for when they are "desensitizing" or "sacking out" a horse.

Great question. A sacked-out horse is a horse that will stand there as the pressure is being applied but is not ok within themselves. They know they need to stand still but they are tense and anxious on the inside. Although they may not move when the desensitizing pressures are being applied they are still not relaxed and will still spook and run from pressure in fear. The biggest problem of all is that they build like a pressure tank. They know they need to stand still but are not ok, the tension builds and builds till something happens and they have a big explosion. People will often say that it came out of nowhere but the tension was building under the surface the whole time. When a horse learns to control the pressure mentally, nothing is building within, the horse will be relaxed within and calm on the outside because they processed through the pressure. They are then learning to control the pressure rather than store their fear within.
