I have been getting a lot of questions about the specific rates of herbicides so I decided to make a video dedicated to herbicide usage on Sunflowers, particularly Clearfield varieties.
Planted a clearfield test acre following a very similar recipe. Results so far are good. Will be planting 5-8ac more soon. I’m going to add the Clethodim. Using Authority Elite pre-emerge - metolachlor and sulfentrazone already mixed. Was cheaper and easier to me.
Love the content. Thank you. Quick question: does the beyond need a rainfall to activate like the pre emergents or is best with no rainfall in the forecast?
Does not need rainfall to be active from my understanding. The only thing rain related was to apply a minimum of 1hr before rainfall (keeps from washing off the leaf).
Really appreciate your sunflower guide videos. I had success last year broadcasting peredovik variety with limited equipment. I’m doing clearfields this year and hoping to have a much cleaner stand with the herbicide regime. Last year I did end up spraying all my flowers and fields with glyphosate two weeks before we hunted and ran a prescribed fire through it. Not much fuel but cleaned up the grasses and the birds came in well. I’m going to be broadcasting the clearfields this weekend and wondering how you recommend covering the seeds? I used a light disking last year on the peredovik and they seemed to do ok, however I read the clearfields may be more sensitive to planting too deep so I’m a little worried. I need a cultipacker I suppose. Maybe next year! Thanks again love your videos. Very concise and extremely helpful.
Thanks for following along! One easy thing you could do after lightly discing the sunflowers under is "track" them in with the tractor or an atv. That simply running over the plot back and forth until you can see tire tracks over the entire field. Takes a little bit but would certainly help in lieu of a cultipacker.
Hopefully planting today. Work schedule and Ma Nature have not been in our favor lately. We have a two row planter that I have modified to drop Clearfield Seeds about every 12-18 inches apart. Our field has regranted weeds since our initial burn-down. We are going to plant anyway and come back with a herbicide to do a post planting burn-down. What would you suggest? Will Clearfield be okay if we come back over it with a Glysophate spray? And then with the Pre-Emergent cocktail immediately after the planting? What does your experience tell you? Thank you.
Missed this comment, my apologies. Glyphosate is fine to spray post planting, but before the crop emerges! Sooner the better, sunflowers can germinate in just a few days .
Thank you for doing these videos. Very helpful. Its almost time for Post emergent spraying here for me. I have the IMOX and Clethodim but I cannot find any Nitro Surf around here. Is there a substitute I can use? Thanks for any help.
I have a question. We’re planting about 1.5 acres in clearfields. We planted half the field one week ago and plan to plant the other half in another week to help stagger the maturing times. Thanks to fed ex my metolachlor didn’t arrive till just now. I went ahead and sprayed the spartan charge after the first planting. Now I’m noticing growth in the field that is not sunflowers. Is it to late to hit it with the metolachlor?
Label says you can apply after planting, BUT BEFORE crop emerges. If you have germination in that one field, then the answer would be no. If the other half has not germinated, go for it. Good thing is, you have IMOX to knock out a lot of that
I planted peredoviks 6 days ago. I did not do an initial burn down. I just mowed and heavily disked my field. There are no growth on my seeds. What preemergents can i use and is it ok to do so now? Also, is clethodim the only post emergent safe for use on peredoviks? Thanks and I thoroughly enjoy your channel
It's risky, but if you dont see any foliage, you can probably still spray all the preemergent. Dual Magnum label says after planting but before crop emerges. I would go half of max rate though to be safe. The only post-emergent for Perdoviks I am aware of is Clethodim but there are other grass specific herbicides that might work, I am just not familiar with them.
I sure have, and it did not seem to do as well on the grasses overall. So I started adding in the clethodim, which is pretty cheap. Same thing on my clover plot at my house, just the IMoX cleaned up the broadleaf, but didn’t do much on the grass. Great question!
I spray after planting and let the lord soak it in. This year we are planting the day before a forecasted .6" of rain so should be in better shape. One time I did spray the pre before tilling under and didnt see any difference
I would just spray it with the same glyphosate rates two weeks before planting. No post emergent spray is necessary in my experience. Millet grows thick and quick and crowds out the competition. I then burn it with fire once it has completely dried out about two weeks before season
Sure do ! All compatible. You don’t necessarily need all three depending on your weeds, but we’re still working on getting ours under control after three or four years. Hopefully we get our broadleaves under control and just focus on grasses
is there reason you are useing multiple pre emergance that target the same plants. Also I found Me-To-Lachlor 2.5gal for $75. have you had good luck with is vs. Dual 2 Magnum@@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors
How do you determine the rate of the herbicide per gallon of water? I’m using a 30 gallon tank and I’m not exactly sure how gallons I’m gonna have to use per acre
You have to calibrate your equipment to get a general idea of gallons per acre in order to know oz per gallon. Most labels are written in amount of product per acre. So for me, I can spray about 30-35 gallons of solution per acre at a moderate/slow speed.
One more question, is there a safe alternative for surfactant other than nitro surf? Running short on time with the weed control and won’t be delivered on time. Appreciate all your help.
I’ve tried sunflowers a few times for my dove field but the price to spray it is ridiculous. I went to all millet this year and will try to burn it down before season. Hopefully it works out okay.
I will need to check the label but I’m 99% sure you can only spray the IMOX one time during one growing season. the clethodim is probably fine to spray multiple. ( shouldn’t need it more than twice really). I’ll check the label tonight. If you wanna search the beyond herbicide label your answer should be in there.
@@tommyftfywelch4332 I am sure you can spot treat a couple times, just dont spray the whole field. Label specifically says do not spray more than 4 oz per acre per year, so proceed with caution!
I notice your cheat sheet for pre-emergent and Post emergent are ounces per acre! How many gallons of water should I use per that acre? You know should it take 2-3 or more gallons of water to cover an acre?
Most all labels and rates are based on acres. All spray equipment is different, so it's tough to know exactly how many gallons per acre for your setup. For me, my 40gal Fimco sprayer with a 4.5 GPM pump can put out about 35 gallons per acre. That would change based on your pump size, nozzle type, speed, etc. Do a test with with your equipment using plain water on .25 acres and then do the math. Good luck!
As it currently stands....we are broadcasting. I have been looking for affordable planters and pricing someone to do it and not sure that is in cards this year. Dont hold it against me if you see be broadcasting corn lol
@@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors hey, got to do what we got to do! Trying to get my ground ready right now to plant. Going to go with the entire 14 acres in sunflower this year. Have you planted yet?
@@jameswhite2275 8 oz per acre. It takes me about 30 gals of solution per half acre. So you are talking only .13 oz per gallon. Easier to measure your field size and then do the math based on acreage
@@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors awesome, thank you. I had some left from spaying clover and thought I would use that instead of ordering more for this year. Can Imox be sprayed on clover as the substitute for raptor?
@@Yellowlab247_NC_Outdoors that's awesome to know. Last question, lol. Can I spray clethodim on black oil sunflowers? I know I can't do imox. thank you for the help
You are correct, that’s a tough answer because it’s all based on gallons per minute of your sprayer. prowl, for example would benefit from more water soaking it in. My 4.5 GPM electric sprayer does ~35-40 gallons per acre
Sunflowers hands down for dove production. BUT if you want cheap and easy, millet is the way to go. Spray the field, plant the millet, then fire burn it, DONE. Thanks for following along!
