Marmol did the right thing, just like Billy Martin had to discipline Reggie Jackson publicly. Even if Marmol had called O'Neill into his office to discuss it, he would have had to come out and tell the team about what was discussed, and it would have gotten out into the public anyway. In all honesty, I don't believe O'Neill was injured as much as he claimed to be, so I favor the Manager's decision. There was an attitude problem there to address. And from O'Neill's recent comment, I think he accepts what Marmol did was proper.

Did Oli Bring it up? I thought he was asked a direct question by a reporter and answered it honestly. I would have said something to the tune of, "I'll have to go back and look at it" and tried to protect my player in retrospect, but in real time after a loss, it's hard not to answer this directly. Especially, if you noticed it and it was a reason you lost a game (one play is never "the" reason you lost the game). O'Neill, clearly a guy that works out more than anyone in major league baseball, was probably not used to having his work ethic questioned at all, let alone publicly, and took it personally. Also understandable. As a high school baseball coach, I pulled my left fielder out in the middle of an inning because he was staring at the ground when a line drive was hit to the outfield. I then proceeded to ask him, loudly, in the dugout, in front of his parents, where his head was at and if he actually wanted to play baseball for this team. He was one of our best players for the rest of the season and was a huge reason we went 8-2 over our last 10 games. The respect for the game comes before the feelings of any one player or coach. Oli didn't become a major league manager by accident and if the players he was coaching started to stray from the respect for the game of baseball, then who am I to say he shouldn't call them out publicly? When you are a manager, players not hustling is a direct reflection on you and the way your team views the game of baseball. Oli made it clear how he views that game of baseball, and now everyone knows it. It was sloppy, but they know it.

I will never think that O'Neill and Marmol was the problem, and I don't believe that Marmol saying what he said was out of line. Billy Martin called out Reggie Jackson in their dugout during a game, with cameras rolling. That's an unfortunate, but sometimes necessary thing for Managers to need to do. Actually, the comment from O'Neill reported here is consistent .... he respects the Manager, even if he isn't on absolutely friendly terms. They got past it. O'Neill's lingering problem is with Mozeliak, pure and simple, over the contract arbitration. He wasn't hustling because he felt disrespected by Mo in the off-season. Marmol had to do something about it, or discipline throughout the team would have suffered.

I think in TOs case the arb case got in his head. The team would bring up injuries to cut costs on the contract which is normal arb crap. I'm guessing instead of going full out he thought either he wouldn't be sent or Acuna wouldn't throw. He was in IMO trying to pick his spots to prevent injuries. The arb situation really pisses off players in many cases.
@bigbrad6828
@bigbrad6828 3 месяца назад
“The arb situation pisses off players” Why? It’s business. I could see it being an issue if players were consistently taking smaller contracts to stay with teams that brought them up but that rarely happens if ever. Players cry foul when it doesn’t benefit them but have no issue jumping to a new team for a few more bucks a year. I think players need to not cry about the business they willingly chose because they know they will make huge sums of money when they hit free agency.

@@timelias6508 I think you’re exactly right and on base. It just doesn’t sit right with me, especially with a player like burnes. He’s going to he a 200-300 million dollar contract from one of the coastal teams or Chicago and is complaining because a team like Milwaukee is trying to save a little money where they can. I understand how a player wouldn’t want to be in the room. I’m curious if it’s a requirement.

I think O'Neill was a scapegoat for Marmol's screwup in the 2022 playoffs against the Phillies. Marmol needed to get respect and thought calling him out would get respect only to backfire. Marmol tried to embarass O' Neill like a child to motivate him. You can do that to a high school player, maybe a college player, but not a professional, talk to him behind closed door man to man. If it was about lack of hustle, how many times did the Cardinal outfielders not hustle to the ball that allowed the hitter to take 2nd base !

What happens in the clubhouse needs to stay in the clubhouse. Who did we get for Lane Thomas? Carlson is not a 4th outfielder. Either play him every day for at least a month to see if he is a first round pick or bust. Play him or trade him for pitching.

dude what T. O said in that video, was in MHO driven by his Agent. To show he was a not a malcontent, will Cardinal fans treat him, if he is not injured I am sure they will do it with class. Oli should not have spoke about the effort, because his message made the rest of the team on notice and they play with enough pressure.

Tyler got a raw deal and it was completely unprofessional to publicly out him. I don't believe he was hustling , but he might have been trying to take it easy , so he didn't get injured. I also don't believe that he is safe even if he hustles the whole way. With that being said, I'm happy, he's gone along with Jack.

I still miss Walt Jockety. Mos' stance on Ollie Marmol is unbelievable. Marmol lacks what it takes to manage in the Major League. I am with O'Neill on Marmol. A real coach would take the player off to the side and address concerns that way. Tyler could have hustled a little more but Marmol made The Cardinal sin (no pun intended)

If you're a manager that has a track record and respect you can call a player out. When you don't like Oli and simply trying to gain credibility by saying what he said what do you think the other players are going to think. He would have been much better off having Oneil's back.

@rayrussell6258 ya way better to tell the players you don't have their back. We saw how that went. Oneill always hustled and that's your reaction for a first time offense. Im sure the players were ready to run through walls for him after seeing that.
@rayrussell6258
@rayrussell6258 3 месяца назад
@@discostu483 Oh no, it wasn't a first offense, you are wrong. He wasn't hustling in spring training. I only saw two games, but noticed it. And unlike a little girl who cries when criticized, I believe grown men can handle a performance review from their boss, and become motivated by it. You don't? "How it went" ..... was due to the arbitration hearing, had nothing to do with Marmol. And if Marmol didn't do that, the players would have been running away from walls. That's how discipline or no discipline works. No discipline, your team turns into a bunch of whining little girls, and can't handle tough spots. They wonder why that guy got off so easy, and start easing up themself. If you pay attention to successful coaching in the history of sports, they are ALWAYS the disciplinarians.
@discostu483
@discostu483 3 месяца назад
@rayrussell6258 a gold glover coming off an injury so he's trying to stay healthy in spring training is a good decision and he might have been surprised that he was being sent on a line drive one hopper to a shallow Acuna when they also know he's hurt. Nothing following that showed me that the players jumped to attention and suddenly got it together however the lack of discipline, fundamentals, and complete chaos thereafter spoke volumes.
@rayrussell6258

@@discostu483 oh crap, what a line of excuses, O'Neill was pouting and going through the motions. No real man would go out there and contribute to a loss, by trying to "stay healthy". That's NOT a good decision. That's an excuse. Btw, the "incident" in question where he was thrown out at home did not happen in spring training, which you suggested in your previous post, it was the 5th game of the regular season, going by what JD said in this video. You make up all those other negatives .... players were motivated and disciplined, they just didn't have enough talent to win on the 2023 team that Mo put together. Truthfully, Mo was too soft, in signing Wainwright instead of using that money to keep Montgomery long term. It was poor pitching that hurt the team, nothing Marmol could do about that. And even casual fans knew Mo didn't do his job to get pitching, before the 2023 season debacle ever began. You forgot that? As for jumping to attention, I guess you also missed the team giving an interview to the press, and 100% backing Marmol as Manager, and taking personal responsibility for the losing!!!! Open both your eyes. Stop your excuse making! If you were a manager, with your thinking, you'd be in last place every year! lol

Just saw Cliff Williams article on redbird rants. Either he has never played or he is so into numbers he refuses to look at the obvious. Cardinal hitters had no plate discipline. Opposing pitcher were aware and especially with runners on base were getting outs without throwing strikes. The analysis Mr. Williams should have included in his article was batting averages with two strikes and behind in the count. Bad plate discipline and analytic induced guessing has a huge effect.

I get everyone saying to keep it in house. I saw with my own eyes the play in discussion and can we at least agree, that oneil pukled up, for whatever reason. Whem he was asked if he was hurt, he responded no. All i need to hear. He then goes on to say his ultimate goal is to be on the fld for 160. Yeah well, that didnt happen either. Oli calling him out was answering a question, honestly. If i was a teammate of broneils, id want that in a manager so i wouldnt have to do it. Boils down to backbone, which oneil lacks. Dude went off in 21, but so did that fletcher guy from anaheim, that busted. There are a couple more that busted out in 21 that aint hapeening now across the league. He is better off in boston. As far as oli taking all the blame for 23 is kinda asinine. No one could win with that pitching. Everyone should move past 23 and lokk at 24. If the first half looks anything like 23, ill jump on the hate oli train. Til then, imma cheer my cards. Go Cardinals!
