Hip hop doesn't need to stop sampling, they just need to learn how to sample again. What they're doing now is just almost verbatim loop placements and calling it a day. Also I don't think his point is that you should stop striving for growth, but rather what is the motivation behind it and what will you personally, and actually gain from it. A lot of people today just do shit to post it and show that they did it.

I’ve always had the idea that Apple Music users know what they want. They know the artists they like and are diligent in their own music listener experience. Spotify users love the ability to learn about new music through the algorithmic playlists that the app creates. Neither is wrong, but the user interfaces on both support my thought. Haven’t done it in a while but much to Shawn’s point early in the vid, I used to actively set out a goal to find new artists. For me movies and music specifically albums differ in one important way that really plays into what Shawn is articulating. Albums if you don’t like parts you can take what you do like and enjoy them separately, whereas movies and even shows are one complete experience where you can’t really just take 15 minutes and enjoy that part so that commitment to the whole project is way more intimidating
@otg_dre

You can take a tv show and enjoy an episode more than the whole season or show as a whole
@otg_dre

We’re also in a day in age where if you really like a particular scene from a movie, chances are someone else likes it more than you and went as far as to make a RU-vid clip with just that specific scene cut out of the film. I might not have the time to watch Spider-Man 2 every week but I’d be dammed if i don’t watch the train fight scene on RU-vid every now and again
@BOGOworms4sale
@BOGOworms4sale 7 месяцев назад
@@otg_dre true, but that scene still primarily exists as a part of a larger coherent project. That scene doesn’t really work on it’s own as a standalone entity. Whereas you can get a complete experience from a single song. Plus when experiencing new music, you can just pick out songs and get a feel for what the artist is trying to do, but you can’t experience a new show by choosing the highest rated episode and only watching that. Unless it’s like a sitcom I guess so yeah maybe the analogy falls apart a bit lol
@BOGOworms4sale

I think the misunderstanding youre having about what the other guy was saying is that music used to be a hobby for a "third place" the way movies and video games were pre internet which is what he was talking about initially. You used to get together with friends or people that would be friends JUST to listen to music. That was entirely the point of the hang out was to spin a record. That, like other third places does not exist in the way they used to and that lack of local community is what makes it feel like a genre is dying. I dont think its about people leaving a function or a friends house just because they dont like the music, but more of people generally do not hang out entirely because of music anymore

Every artist that i’ve gone out of my way to find and end up liking recently (like the past 2 years) are like 95% non hip-hop and i’m someone who listens to a lot of music. Idk if that’s just my taste shifting but I seem to find a lot of people my age sharing the same sentiments. Doesn’t mean hip hop is dead, but I don’t feel that same collective excitement there was even just 10 years ago. Of course, with the rise of social media sites like tiktok collective music experiences have dwindled, Patrick touches on how people are craving that. That’s why it’s so hard for new artists to break through the mainstream in a meaningful way now and why the same artists who were on top 15 years ago are on top today (hip hop and non hip hop). Also the reason why nostalgia is so dominant in marketing nowadays. I wonder what the next big shift is gonna be but it’s hard to envision that with the structure of the music industry atm.
@paquinraino8180
@paquinraino8180 7 месяцев назад
The reason why is because you have now access to more artist and more genre than before that's why 95% are non hip-hop, for people in other country like me I'm from the Caribbean I always had a multitude of genres growing up ( reggae, dancehall, zouk, reggaeton, kompa, afro, soca, hip hop, rock, funk, RnB) so to me it's nothing new. I think it's just American are experiencing non US like music for the first time in many years. Also there's still a lot of good less known artists like Denzel Curry, JID, Earthgang, Joey Badass, Vince Staples, Griselda, Zillakami, Russ, Dave East, JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown etc. just people don't really care to search for it

@@youngsway8696 the current Country uprising is attributed to the decline of hip hop and the upsurge of country music fans transitioning from physical copies to digital platforms as well as the political landscape where country artists are baiting conservatives with cultural issues. Plus, you don’t need radio or a singular source determining “ what’s on the come up “ or “Hot or Not”. Now step out that curated pool and come into that deep ocean. It hard to to navigate at first but you will find buried treasure or some doubloons along they way.

The way I see it, hiphop is in its hair metal era. A lot of what’s mainstream (not all) is very soulless and empty (Ken Carson, destroy lonely, new Drake) and as a result people are getting tired of it. But just like how hair-metal had grunge, rap will have something similar that pulls from its roots. In a way I already see it with the east coast Griselda sound becoming more and more mainstream. Could also be the rock rap thing going on with Teezo and Paris Texas. Either way saying it’s dead is silly.

42:30 I think you’re focusing too much on the “friend” aspect of the conversation. I think Patrick’s point is due to the way we consume media nowadays, collective music experiences are few and far between and that’s ultimately what people are craving. Of course you have to search for most of the great music you’ll listen to, but experiences can add to people’s enjoyment. Probably the biggest example of this is shows such as TRL, 106&Park, and other music based television. Those shows were big since we didn’t have the access to celebrities and content we do now back then, so it was a big moment whenever a new video premiered or someone performed. It was something that everyone could talk about similar to an actual serialized weekly show. Were people making friends over this? Maybe or maybe not but that’s not really the point. It was just a collective music experience, something everyone digested and therefore everyone could talk about. With the rise of social media, there are more visible artists but none of them really have the same affect as artists from just 10-20 years ago because they don’t have the same platforms to create such huge moments and the rapid way we consume media now doesn’t really allow for that. Whether it’s a good or bad thing is up to you, this is just one example though. For a more in depth look I recommend a youtuber named “Calvin Michaels”, specifically his “Record Labels are Depressed” video. Although titles like that can be kind of daunting sometimes, he actually covers this kind of stuff on his channel a lot with probably the most informed and nuanced commentary on it i’ve seen on youtube. He’s kind of like a more music based FD Signifier, check him out.

It's a thing that fantano talked about having worked in radio. Hip-hop or any one artist really can never be as big as it once was because of the fact that with the rise of streaming and the death of radio being the cultural taste-maker there no longer exists this large monoculture and these massive cultural events. I think that the underrated reason that Marvel went under is because they went to streaming during the pandemic which meant that the works were no longer homogenized. No matter how you feel about She-Hulk, it was always going to be a more niche concept which meant that it was going to alienate some aspect of the fanbase. I think that's why Drake's gotten worse too. In 2015 and prior, he has deals with radios, and because they're gonna play his songs he can take more risks, and since Views he's been pretty much in this monogenre were he really doesn't take many risks trying to appease everyone. People HN was a risk, but he'd already done house music with Views, and it was overly simplistic house as well.

I am not really a hip hop fan, I’m way more into rock but saying “hip hop is dead” just bc a year of it not being at the top of the charts is just such crybaby sh*t. Like chill out. As a rock fan, you guys are sitting pretty. Also you’re wrong Shawn at the start of the video, the video game industry is better than its ever been making waaaaaay more money than ever before

Hiphop us dead because the dominant musical taste of fans has asked for less from artists as the years pass. Most new(white "hiphop fans" dont care or ask for lyricism which is why it isnt common in mainstream.

Nah, I don’t agree with Shawn on this one.HipHop is definitely dying, However Rap is becoming more n more popular. Remember nobody is a Mcee or Rapper anymore. Everyone is an “artist” n doesn’t want to be “held” down by HipHop Standards.

Yeah he didn’t say you get recommendations after saying something, he got a recommendation after thinking the thought that damn those lights are bright. The algorithm can “predict” even things you’ll only think like “damn those lights are bright”. It is creepy and bit upsetting when you don’t even say anything and your unique thought that day gets a video recommendation
