Fly with us in our 1957 Cessna 182 "Mojo" as Kevin completes his first instrument approach! Kevin is an Air Traffic Controller, has been right seat in many IFR flights, and has completed lots of ground training but this is his first ever hand flown approach.

Great video! Having just got our C182M back from the avionics shop equipped with all Garmin radios (G3X, GTN650, CNX375, GFC500 and G5) I am now having to learn how to use it (so far I have 5 hours of flying). Mindy's tips are great. I especially appreciate hearing how you set up your cockpit and the little things that you do along the way to keep everything matching. Thanks!

I've been going on silent ferry rides with you for years, along with about 20 others, but I sure am glad when you really started working on your channel, getting a hanger, modding the panels, and is there anything more gorgeous than that 182. I'm only a flight simmer but that's my go to girl there. Been loving watching Kevin as he progresses, and huge congrats on passing the written, and acing it at that. Butter.

Controller/pilot here too. I just got my IFR last summer and what helped me the most was using X-Plane in between lessons to hammer out procedures, multi-tasking, and checklists/flows. Doing this combined with being a controller, all I had to really do is learn how to attitude fly the airplane. Kevin did great!

As a professional pilot, I wish every ATC controller would be required to get an instrument rating. This is such a great video and shows how much a pilot(especially a single pilot) is going through on a simple IFR flight. One thing I’ve learned after flying for 35yrs, flying airplanes is very humbling. Accept it because it happens to all pilots.

Cool video I had to sub. I'm just a flight simmer but I did learn about activating vectors to final. I always wondered what that meant. What was the reasoning for the circle approach after being on ILS? Was that just for practice of a missed approach?

A lot going on, kodos to both of you, radio's, manual flying, IFR goggles, radios, planing, wowzers. I did my PPL many years ago, on PA.28 never got around to doing more due to costs and life, wish I had a 2nd life and Mindy as an instructor. The more it's done the more you be relaxed and ahead I presume. Thanks so much for sharing such a tricky learning session in such an open way & very informative to all. 100% on test is amazing & seems all going well. 👍👍

Congrats Kevin, absolute kudos on your 100% instrument. I am a 1500 hour plus sim pilot. I simply put a line over 'runway number' as a hold short when copying IFR. I could be doing something wrong, but I understand what I'm writing. (Instead of HS 23) Is this wrong Mindy? Thx, and I love your videos. Now Kevin will be smarter than you. So many memories!!! Did private, instrument and multi at Orlando executive. Did so so so many landings at Ocala. I don’t remember a tower there though…?? Do remember two statue horses as you walk up to the door of FBO. Watching him with the foogles on starting to sweat and taking deep breaths just brought back so much anxiety. Vertigo and all that info coming at you all at once is challenging to say the least. Nice job Kevin on passing the writen. My examiner told me while on instrument check ride that he doesn’t expect perfection just an understanding of what you’re doing. Big thing was DO NOT GET LOW.
