I find it funny how washes are called "traditional technique". When I started 14-15 years ago, only really highly skilled painters used washes and they made them themselves. GW had even discontinued their washes in 1990's (I've tried them earlier this year and well... they're a lot different than modern washes), they only had inks and washing with them looked horrible, but then GW released their new washes and revolutionized miniature painting. But yeah, it's traditional technique these days. Great video!

Yes, depending on when you started, it's certainly far from traditional. :) - That being said, it's become so and sort of the standard learning method now given most people's entrance into the hobby.

Yep, we will definitely have a big style discussion. It's a little tougher as there are almost as many styles as there are artists (as in the end, it's people speaking in their own voice through the paint), but I think we can find a way to have some broad discussions.

Lol I remember my first wash. Or my early dry brushing attempts I remember rattlecan painting a box of Empire Knights and then dry brushing the whole model with leadbelcher, and then just being super happy because it looked like it had depth and like I was suddenly master painter

Congrats :D That was an interesting break down and also interesting how you decided to chop and group the techniques. I would almost call them different "schools" somehow. When it started I was expecting you to have a bit more air time on "wet techniques" which there are more than I can count under that banner. There was also the random noise techniques I was missing a little (stippling, sponges, broken brushes, brush strokes, random paint application, pigments, etc).

Yeah, it was really a look at schools, I think that's right. I was fascinated to speak to people about the broader steps taken from primer to finished miniature, rather than speak on any individual process (i.e. the type of blending). The random noise is an interesting point (especially as it relates to finishing where I am talking about glazing).

Good lord, I believe i've watched all 200 of these. Am i better painter? ...No. However, i'm the tiniest fraction better at glazing, i think. But then again, i'm an army painter, with just a little interest into local painting comps. The biggest takeaway that i've gotten from these 200 shows, was the sketch style. The sketch/speed style opened ALOT of doors for me, when it came to painting massive blocks of troops. And its even quicker than airbrushing my basecoats, getting the transitions on my primary colors, and then brushing out the details. I hope that someday, i can attend a class, and try to learn how to really do that value sketch technique, along with learning how to efficiently glaze.

wonderful video! i thought after reading the title that you would describe "techniques" like glazing, nmm, tmm, washing, edge highlighting, osl, drybrushing, feathering, wet blending... would you be willing to give a sort of overview of these "techniques"? so that i as a newbie can get an idea of what is even possible to do with a brush?

Yeah, a year ago it seemed like everything I painted ended up with an abundance of pastel colors all over it..(poorly executed sketch style) and gradually over time my style evolved to be more saturated (properly executed sketch style). This happened organically as I learned more and more about how to use contrast more effectively, made mistakes and learned from them, etc. Then you look back a year ago to what you did and marvel at how it looks like it was painted by a completely different person than yourself.

Thanks, Vince! My paint game has vastly improved due to you. The one thing I struggle with, again and again, is glazing! It's so confusing, or should I say so many variables from "how much to thin", "brush too wet", "brush too dry", "unable to visualize end result", "rough transitions". So I'll get frustrated and jump to dry brushing instead and even that will look like ass!! Perhaps I'm pushing myself too hard too soon. I just can't seem to make smooth blends. So I'll go back to GW basics for a bit ...and then try again, and fail. Ugh! I just wish you would make a super-in depth, extreme-amateur level tutorial on glazing. I've even ordered (and still waiting on) the War Colours Glazes to see if that helps with my thinning fails. Thank you for your amazing channel!

Glazing is easier with dark colors, tints can go chalky. Reds and yellows are the ones to start with. I use glazing medium as too much water breaks down the pigment. Be sure to wick most of the paint off the brush to keep it under control. I paint over printed text to gauge the opacity and vary it according to what I need. I prime plastic packaging with interesting shapes to practice.

@@thumbprintsinputty6168, I've tried glazing medium and it seems to make everything too glossy. Water, like you said, seems to dilute away the pigment. I've tried mixing with a combo of thinner medium and water but just haven't gotten the ratios right yet. No matter how thin I go, I just can't seem to get away from a hazy/chalky, staining effect that looks like a mess. Perhaps I just need to do some practice on something flat (like you said). Failing on the model compounds my frustrations and just ruins my paint session. I just don't understand why this technique is so hard for me. I've even mastered edge highlighting (with Vince's help). Just can't get this glazing & blending thing. Grrrrr.

@@VinceVenturella I'll rewatch it. I understand the concept and the mechanics, I just can't seem to get the paint to cooperate. I'm sure its just having the experience of knowing how the paints work and thin, how your brush delivers, etc. I suppose that will just come with more practice and patience. The rest came so quickly and produced amazing results. It's just frustrating to hit a wall without a clear "answer" as to what you're doing wrong.

So I am thinking of getting a few contrast paints but I am looking for more useful colors that work with normal paints. So if you only could pick 5 contrast paints to add to your tool box what would they be? 10? Again not looking to do models all in contrast just part, like the fur on a model or maybe the skin to make it a bit easier.

Fyreslayer Flesh, Iyanden Yellow, Gryph Hound Orange, Akhelian Green and the Black. Those are quite useful in a broad range of situations.

Love the videos! Could you do a video or point me to some tips on cleaning up your painting? I feel confident painting monsters and things like that but when I get to something like a space marine where everything is super smooth it doesn’t look good.

My best advice is to watch the Achieving Smooth Blends video and How to Glaze video, when it comes to smoothing on smaller miniatures, this is usually the last steps.

The strange thing is that there is no tutorial in existence (to my knowledge) where a WH40K Ultramarine is painted in zenithial using the recommended GW paints. If anyone has got a formula to get Mccragge Blue by GW to get it to Vallejo Ink consistency you've got a friend for life !

The precise colors drift across years and gaming systems. Citadel changed their entire paint range a while ago, and the old Ultramarines Blue is not the same as the new Macragge Blue (their own conversion chart lists Altdorf Blue as the new analogue). Also, Horus Heresy Ultramarines seem to have a slightly darker hue to them. So it doesn't really matter which exact blue color you paint them, it will be as "official" as what GW is doing anyway.

@@p_serdiuk yes I've noticed that the old ultramarine gw paint scheme is a lighter blue. I guess if you want consistency and your paint colour to not be discontinued go for Vallejo. I am asking around because I actually attempted zenithial by thinning down Macrqgge blue with Vallejo matte medium and the result was disappointing, still opaque or overly bright in areas. Dunno how to do it so it looks great. That's why I would love someone out there to do a video, when you have 120 ultramarines to paint the 'eavy metal style of painting is not an option.

Yeah, my best advice is if you are going for an ultramarine blue with a glaze you want a darker blue. It will naturally be lighter and more transparent showing the undercoat of the white.

@@VinceVenturella yeah Vince for the ultramarines I have painted I use white primer as after I thin with a bit of distilled water and W&N flow Improver it gets exactly the right shade of macrsgge blue I like much nicer than using a grey or black primer. The colour of the primer is so important for subsequent thin coat colours applied.

There's a style I've become really enamored with that I'm starting to see a lot lately that uses layering of thin sharp lines over an opaque basecoat in a sketch/comic style that creates really striking contrast on miniatures with strong musculature or things like wings. Will Hahn did a great Myrmidon in the PMP group with this technique. I've seen some folks call it sketch style, though it doesn't seem to be similar to Matt's style or your Value sketching video as it doesn't seem to rely on glazing. Is anyone familiar with this approach and if there's any guides on it?

Hi Vince, This is now my goto video for people who want to start painting. Along with top ten cheating techniques. Also, I tried the Value Sketching technique you used on the large fleshy demon with the blue skirt on a 28mm ranger with green cloak and it came out a mess -- the blends were not natural. Obviously I need more practice, but 1) I think I had not selected the right color triad. 2) Is this maybe too small a model to start practicing on?

Well, there are a few issues. 1) what paint were you using? It needs to be relatively thick and shouldn't be an air paint. 2) A bigger brush makes a big difference. So go to the biggest brush you can. I use the technique on that size all the time, but larger surfaces do make it easier to learn/practice. :)

I did do a historical bust and I displayed at the MFCA this year and I did win a certificate of excellence but I realize now where I went wrong and that was with highlighting is there a way I can improve on this ?

If you know any high level figure painters, or have access to an ipms or amps clubs, or better yet, a miniature club, you can ask for criticism. Historical figures are painted with the same techniques, there is more emphasis on lights and shadow and we don't do NMM. METAL RULES!

Sure, the best way to improve is to likely integrate those learnings on contrast on another bust and take that to MFCA again. Have the judges give you feedback on that specific item. :)

A few weeks ago you put a call out for video ideas, and I thought of how foundational this vid was for me and how I've shown it to 2 friends so far as they decide how they want to approach their first mini-painting projects. This vid came out really early in the contrast game, and also before that streak of youtubers giving guides on how to paint with just a drybrush. Do you feel like enough has changed since 2019 to warrant an update of this one?

Question what would call the style Bogusz Bohun Stupnicki uses? www.patreon.com/bohunarts To me it almost seems as though he uses dry brushing and stippling? Aslo gratz on the 200 video.

Well, one thing I wasn't wanting to focus on here is processes (like wet blending) - that's the individual element. I was more concerned with the holistic approach, how are you going from primer to finish and the sort of broad steps you take along the way. Bohun for example is basically often "layering" - that is the thickness of his paint, he is just doing it through dry brushing and stippling as the paint is thick. He does produce a unique look for sure with his overall style, using that thicker paint layering technique through the process of dry brushing and stippling amongst many others.

@@VinceVenturella Thanks for the answer i wasn´t sure if it was layering or not, since he used drybrushing rather then what layering usually is a lot of thin layers. So it might have been a technique i wasn´t familiar with that had its own unique name. But it just goes to show the variety of each technique.

Great video - I'm an admirer of the layering technique, but paint traditional for the most part, with a healthy amount of wetblending. One thing though, on the last slide... not a fan. I think that figure look more like a comic book character than something I could see on a (simulated) battlefield. This might be because I'm not a fan of NMM overall, but in this case, it looks - sorry to say - overdone to the extreme. Other than that, as I said, great video.

It's one of my favorite miniatures and certainly represents a high quality figure, but that doesn't mean a person has to enjoy it. Ultimately the enjoyment of any figure is personal and as long as what you are painting matches your tastes and producing figures you enjoy, then you are using the right techniques. :)

Vince Venturella Absolutely - I totally agree. However, this style of figure is what win competitions, and since I don't paint 3D comic book characters and I really dislike the entire style, my chances to win with the same figure would be very small. I paint for realism, and that means I never overdo effects like this or bring out details to a hard level (where the final highlight almost always end in white) which is - coincidentally - also something I dislike. Not that I care - I paint for me, not anyone else, but it's disheartening to see so many models being painted like this. It's like if all comics and animations suddenly became anime style...

Awww. no mentioned of Wyrd Miiniatures' "Wet on Dry" technique? Or Ben Komet's "Loaded brush" technique?

Well again, those are processes as I defined it here - that's a particular application of paint. I am not talking about that in particular, I am talking about the larger process of taking a miniature from primed to complete and how you are attacking that in broad steps. So like Loaded Brush is really just a form of wet blending, and he uses it amongst many other techniques on the road to a painted miniature ending in glazing.

You missed the most important style, the three step blob, dark layer, medium layer, light layer and NO blending , bish-bosh job's done ;-) all my armies are painted like this.
