A good song can withstand many interpretations, so I had no trouble giving this version to Home Free. This is a great song with an amazing new arrangement. I always enjoy your reactions, and this one is no exception -- honest and genuine wins the Likes.
This song is done in a country reggae beat. It showcases the higher & lower ranges of both Tim Foust & Avi Kaplan. That last note of Tim is impressive with how low he goes, but more impressive is how long he sustains the note. On the "Sing Off Show" that Home Free won in 2013 Tim goes even lower on this song "Ring Of Fire" & he impressed the judges so much that they gave them a standing ovation. And Adam Rupp once again was stellar in his vocal percussion.
In an interview Chris Rupp said that this was filmed in a former manager's farm yard. That it was cold and they kept adding stuff to the fire. If you look closely at the fire at the end, you can see what looks like barricades burning in it.
I like their Sing Off version better. Tim went even lower on tv. They were told by the judges to mix things up so they gave it a different vibe. Avi has a lovely voice. Good one Red! 😍😃
You KNOW that a band is good when you trust them to cover a beloved song. Would HIGHLY suggest "American Pie" and "Listen to the Music." Both covers that are important to me and they knocked out of the park. Thanks
To get a Willie Nelson connection, albeit indirect, look to the cover of Crazy by Home Free, which Willie wrote for Patsy Cline. I might add Home Free's cover of "American Pie" performed with Don McLean is one of my favorites.
To me, one of the great things about Home Free's covers is that they're respectful of the original, while still making it their own. Which is why (I think) so many legends have collaborated with them. Alabama, Lee Greenwood, Don McLean, The Oakridge Boys, and Charlie Daniels (unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a video for it, but they did cover "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" with Charlie Daniels).
They did this for the Sing Off competition, so they were encouraged to make it different & memorable. That's also why the song is so short. I think the live version from the show is better but I'm not sure it would resolve the issues you had with the song. And as much as I love Avi, I think he added an unnecessary element to a song that already had alot of things going on in it. You might try their "Folsom Prison Blues". But that is quite different from the original too. Thanks for the video though! 👩🏻🦰❤🎵
You're not the first reactor who loved this but preferred the original. I think when this came out folks weren't accustomed to Tim's bass capabilities and it took many by surprise. And Adam's beat boxing wasn't well known yet either. It's great that you are honest in your opinion. Most of their songs I love but not every one of them.
One of their earliest and still one of their best. They ended all 3 concerts ive seen with singing this one...Tim's last note leaves a lasting impression for sure.
This was done not long after they won “The Sing-off”. It was sometime before 2016, when Chris Rupp, Adam’s brother and cofounder of the group, left to follow other pursuits and Adam Chance replaced him.
The "Sing-off" version is fun to watch...obviously not as well produced, but when Tim drops what I call the T-bomb at the end (F-bomb could be a little confusing, and while I think it's been called the Brown Note, I prefer T-bomb), the audience loses it. I can't help thinking that's what clinched their victory.
Actually, you might want to watch "Remember My Name" (an Austin Brown original) while you've got those braids: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ue_5wKi9NAc.html
Being that you’re a big fan of Johnny Cash, I can understand why this arrangement might not be your favorite cover from Home Free. To be honest, I wasn’t not a fan, I just wasn’t into Country music back in the 60’s when Johnny was popular. I liked a couple of songs, but I did like Kenny Rogers in the 60’s. Whatever crossed over to the Pop charts in the 70’s through 90’s, I didn’t mind much of it. I love Randy Travis, Alabama, and my favorite of the 2000’s is Keith Urban. Oh, speaking of Keith, maybe check out their cover of his “Blue Ain’t Your Color”! Oh, it’s fantastic, and their choreography, too! Rob has lead on most of the song, but Chance sings a verse, too!
There are so many songs that are at I can the pinnacle that are the original. Here are 2 examples off the top of my head I can not fathom anyone coming close to Linda Ronstadt doing Blue Bayou by the way the 1st 45 I ever bought yes 45 LOL. Another is I'll Never Fall IN Love Again by Sir Tom Jones !!! Red I hp[e someday you react to that Tom Jones song it will blow your mind. As always keep up the great music and your wonderful fun personality you make my day every day ❤❤❤ #reaction #homefree #homefry #homefreereaction #redheadedneighbor
My Dad was a big fan of Johnny Cash. Me, not so much, probably just being the rebellious son. If you have not yet, may I recommend you react to "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. That one is so real.
To be honest, the 1st couple of times I heard this, I was exactly how you described. Protective of the original and "How DARE they change this iconic piece of music!" But then I put my judgments aside and really listened. And i found that no one would ever replace Johnny's version, but I've learned to love Home Free's version in a different way! Great reaction! I appreciate your honesty in that this wasn't your favorite. And that's all right. We're allowed to have opinions! Have a great day!
This is a great video but I still prefer the version our HF fellas sang for their third performance on the 4th season of The Sing Off. It just showcases their strengths even better than this one--in my humble opinion. ❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ (This one does indeed feature Avi Kaplan--another exceptional bass--who has been mentored in bass excellence by Home Free's Tim Foust (as has VoicePlay's Geoff Castellucci)). #HomeFree
Perhaps it's the trumpets and the guitar. Sometimes people have a vision in their head of the original, and since Acapella can't meet that it kind of falls short... But Tim's sustained G1 bass note at the end, in my headphones, had my head and chest vibrating. Speaking ot Willie, try reacting to Home Free "Remember My Name."
I understand what you mean about 'distracting' music videos. Home Free version of Brother is so distracting you have to watch it several times to take in the music and all of the visuals. Quite the treat. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GjkO1EN2Ne0.html
My #2 favorite acapella group. #1 is VoicePlay. It's nice they became and stayed friends since they were on The Sing-Off together. Geoff Castellucci is a fanboy of Tim Foust. Also am a fan of Avi.
I absolutely love their version of this song. At the same time, I can absolutely understand why someone else (who may hold Cash near and dear their heart) may not enjoy it as much. It's all good! They paid homage to the original while making it their own. The hairstyle you're sporting suits you very well btw!
Avi sounds great with Home Free doesn't he? I've love to see another collab that features Avi, Tim, and Chance. Moving forward, I'd recommend going straight to the video that was teased at the end of Ring of Fire. It a goofy Foust original, it was recorded within a day or two of RoF, and if you're an a cappella fan you'll appreciate the little easter egg that was made possible by being recorded when it was. You'll know it when you see it.
The song they played the teaser for would be good. Tim wrote it and Avi does a cameo walk on during it. It was filmed not long after Ring Of Fire and Avi is still sporting the cowboy hat he puts on at the end of Ring Of Fire. They did this song on the sing off and had some suggestions they had to stay within for the show and stayed very close to that performance in this video. This was song # 3 on the sing off and I think really secured their first place at that point. The crowd went wild and Tim's low note at the end got a standing ovation from the judges. But what wins a competition is not necessarily the best version. Looking forward to their new version from their album "As Seen On TV".
Sorry. Not for me. It’s too light. Johnny bought a level of pain to this. It’s a song from a troubled soul. These guys are just to happy. I think your reaction is on point. While they sing well, they don’t do it justice.
It appears that the vast majority of the covers are intended to respect the original artist without trying to make it the same (not duplicate every nuance of the original). They are talented enough to put their own artistic touch on their arrangement to highlight their vocal gifts. The beat they chose to sing this song once they got past the first part was Reggae (Jamaican beat). Johnny Cash in his time did some covers, he did not sing them exactly the same as the original artists but made those his own. Both gifted in their own right. We all choose which we prefer however recognize the gifts each brought to the table. I do recognize preferences for the interpretation that each will enjoy more particularly sentimental reasons. I take no offense if someone differs on how they appreciate one versus the other. 🔥❤️🔥🔥
I have to say I was a bit disappointed with that. Maybe my expectations were too high as this is probably the first one of theirs I've seen where I really like (or even know) the original. Not that it was bad in any way and they did their own spin on it and are undoubtedly excellent at what they do but for me it just didn't hit.
Pretty good, not one of my favorites. How Great Thou Art is my absolute favorite, then Brother's In Arms, Don't Laugh At Me, Helplessly Hoping, In The Blood, Auld Lang Syne, Mayday, My Church, Man Of Constant Sorrow!
Thanks for your reaction. I would love for you to react to Hurt by Johnny Cash. Get your tissues ready. It is an amazing cover of a NIN song. Trent R. who wrote it said it now belongs to Johnny Cash. It was his last album done a few months before June died. Johnny died the next year. Please... and thank you.
Actually Johnny cash did a cover of Ring of Fire which was written by June Carter about her relationship with Cash while he was still married. It was originally recorded and released by her sister.
They were really worried when they did it on the Sing Off that people will be mad at them for the reggae change-up. They have re-done it for their As Seen on TV album with Chance and Tim sharing the bass - no video yet, but if you really want to hear it the audio is out there.
@@redheadedneighbor it really did - it was sort of a "win or lose with this song" type of thing that could have backfired big time. If you watch the SO performance of this, as they walk down the stage for the last line, notice Austin and Rob exchanging a glance - they knew what Tim was about to do and how it would affect the audience. And by then, I think they knew that their reggae change-up was NOT a mistake.
This is YOUR Reaction Channel. And if we can't get your TRUE reaction to a song, then what is the point. We want your reactions, good or bad. Not just the good reactions. This Reaction to this video, just made up my mind for me. Now I know that I will get your True reactions. Keep doing that and I think you will have a lot of people subscribing. And thank you, redheadedneighbbor2
Totally disagree. This is the song that put the group on the map. You obviously have the right to dislike what you want, but this song is a seriously GOOD remake of a JC classic. You obviously don't have a clue about what you're talking about.
Of course you can disagree! That is why we have so much great music in the world, people try different things. I prefer the JC version and you like this one. No big deal.💕
My mother said something similar about HF's Folsom Prison Blues, but of course she was noticing the big difference from Johnny Cash's style. She got over it because she loves Home Free. Re Willie Nelson; I really really wish HF could do a collaboration with him while he's still with us!
You can tell they have evolved over the last 10 years. This is a fun artistic version, but I agree, there are a few songs you just cannot improve. Their Born in the USA is the same for me. Chance did well, but nobody is better than Springsteen. Two they did do justice are American Pie and Country Roads. We would never hate on you for being honest! Thank you for being real!
Hey Red. this seems a little too removed from the original for me, no grit. its as if you have put the song through a 80's casio keyboard then polished it with AI.... kinda fun tho...
@@tosweet68 That's cool. Maybe will check out to see what their own songs are like. Don't think I'll become a fan though, just something doesn't hit me with their sound. :)
I've so far not been, and don't expect to be, disappointment by Home Free's covers of songs or their originals. Of course some songs I like better than others. Some I can and do listen to over and over and this is one of them for sure. I liked Johnny Cash but not enough to lower my love for this cover but can understand Red's less than enthusiastic response to this but that in itself is disappointing as I love this so much. To each his/or her own they say. If everyone loved the same thing there would only be One song. Think of it that way.
Exactly. I didn’t think it was bad at all. Just not my favorite. I do feel that the showcase of their voices and the way it was arranged was so well done. It was hard to put my finger on what felt missing in this song for me. But it doesn’t take away from their status at all. Just means that they give us so much variety we can even be picky!
I don't know about this one you're like the only reactor of saying maybe one other one that didn't actually have a reaction to Tim's low note at the end😮
This is so very awesome! You have to remember Home Free don't do covers they do upgrades! I am sure Johnny Cash would be so very proud! Love your reaction! ♥
@redheadedneighbor I understand what you mean by "clean," but I think it's built into the DNA of a capella. The singing is precise for a reason, I guess. There are times when I wish they were more random or "sloppy" in their delivery. Seems like it happens with PTX and Voiceplay as well.
@@angielofton6372 yes. That is where I think the problem lies with me. You have to learn how to hear certain kinds of music, it seems. And that is actually the fun part! Lol. Normally, I love music that is fused! Thank you for talking to me. I really like it. 💕
