Not as uncommon as you might think, building on old cemeteries and the like is sadly a fairly common practice. If your lucky they actually removed the graves first, if your not and decide to expand a basement you might find "surprises". That or old landfills, they love to build on them because the land is cheap after all.

And it wasn't mentioned in the home inspection

Way back, small communities would bury family members close by. Backyard close by. Because that's how it was done. The family kept track of who was where. But over time, the family dies out or moves away. The stones fall over, get covered up. The little graveyard disappears. Until someone has to dig up a basement....😮

I worried about exactly that when I expanded my Port Moody Home, on the first day of digging.

There was an episode where they found bones buried in a basement. They called the police who determined they were just animal bones.

A lot of this sloppy cover-up work comes from people buying houses just to make them pretty and sell them for a big payday. This is not the standard of work you would do on your own house. I saw it on a small house near me as well. They bought it, added exterior insulation, applied a very thin white coating, and sold it again a few months months later (probably for a ton more), one year later the coating is already peeling off in multiple places ...

I'm wondering if he had an inspector prepare a report, or had an inspection report prepared; maybe the seller just prepared the report himself.

the problem is that contractors aren't all certified and even if they were, if you're using a contractor that's hired by the seller's realtor, bias gonna be applied. Also there are lots of buyers that like this couple that are STUPID. They didn't check foot to ass on this house to see if its good, they looked, saw how beautiful it looked but didn't bother to hire a expensive inspector to see if this house is worth buying, sometimes paying more gets you a more honest inspector.

Homes built between 1850 and 1950 without a remodel, will have plaster/lathe walls. The plaster may have asbestos as the reinforcing fiber in it. Some older homes may have horse hair as the fiber in the plaster. Very old plaster may have asbestos as a natural part of the plaster. So you still have to be very careful. In the 1950 until drywall was invented, used expanded metal as the backing instead of lathe. (the metal will act as a Faraday cage and cause bad radio, TV, cell phone, WIFI reception).

Home inspectors should carry liability insurance so when their reports inevitably go bad, the home owner has an outlet for compensation. It will make the home inspector accountable for their report because their liability insurance will skyrocket if not with the quantity of claims made against them, so instead of a quick run through with a pre filled report and the money in the back pocket (and currently no option to go after the inspector), the inspector actually spends a decent amount of time to check and verify everything they can. I also think that potential home owners need to go in with wide open eyes instead of using their heart and falling in love with a property - spend the money and get dedicated electrical, plumbing and heating reports done - anything found will give room for negotiation on cost, or the ability to walk away from a potential death trap as in the long run, the cost of these reports would be less than having to do remedial works after you've signed on the dotted line.

What qualifications do these honest inspectors have in wonder. Like those guys who inspect my home for energy efficiency. What really do they know?🤷

Mike eventually wrote a big manual of stuff for home buyers to bring with them. So they would have a clue of what to look for , without having to rely on the inspector.

I know about the recent CBC story on how three homes in Ontario that were promoted by Holmes had to be demolished because of poor construction and Holmes suddenly has all kinds of excuses for not attempting to make things right. This guy is a fraud.

@@kevinduveneck1504 There's more to the story and I question why the comments were turned off in the video. Mike Holmes has done a lot for improvements in people's homes. He endorsed it, yes, but he didn't build it.

So Mr. 'Know it all" never looked around at the framing and questioned anything? Give me a break. He even sold the house that he owned and got the h3ll out.

Why do ppl remove weight bearing walls without replacing with the correct beams I'll never know knew the floor dropped because it support was taken away sheesh this poor couple if not for Mike and crew they would have been ruined

I suspect the main reason they don't a lot of the time is zoning. Around here, have a lot of homes that are built places they can't rebuild. Too close to roads, etc. So you're stuck fixing a total wreck or moving, since if you tear it down the lot might not meet modern codes, and you're left selling empty, unusable space. That's the big downside with really old homes, at least around here. Also, if you have a mortgage that can be an issue. You can't destroy the value of the existing building so long as the bank owns it, so the bank will let it get fixed but not demolished and rebuilt. There's a ton of issues that make it so you're forced to repair garbage that frankly should be leveled and redone fully. Loads of headaches. @@SeithonJetter

There was asbestos in the plaster, so they were at risk anyway.

Holmes on Homes had the people pay the remainder of what the contractors were owed and the show paid the rest, even if that ended up being 10x or more the original price. Not sure what Holmes Inspection did.

Actually at the start of video he said even to his own people he was ONLY going to do the bowl fix in the floor and not do a complete gut job and tell the owners rest they had to save and budget for over time. So are you saying he lied? I think he did maybe a bit more than he agreed to but unless there is a disclosure of accounting showing show paid for it all minus any law suit against the former owner, their supplied home inspector then they must have come up with a loan from bank who did not want to see a mortgage go poof so fast in a condemning. In any event looking forward to part 2 to see just how much worse this got before getting better.@@xenadu02

It's a two parter which usually means on their budget they spent twice what they do for a single episode jobs and had to go find a simple issue job for another episode. Probably 100 - 200k of repairs@@xenadu02

@@xenadu02 i believe show usually paid a portion but in most cases the customers still had to pay, i believe they just didnt charge them labor
