When Josette and Jeff moved from a downtown loft to a big open concept house, their home inspector said the sloped floors and sticking doors were typical for a home of this age, but Mike thinks a Holmes Inspection will prove him very wrong. Damon and the crew are on hand to prop up the pieces, and Make it Right.

Not as uncommon as you might think, building on old cemeteries and the like is sadly a fairly common practice. If your lucky they actually removed the graves first, if your not and decide to expand a basement you might find "surprises". That or old landfills, they love to build on them because the land is cheap after all.

Way back, small communities would bury family members close by. Backyard close by. Because that's how it was done. The family kept track of who was where. But over time, the family dies out or moves away. The stones fall over, get covered up. The little graveyard disappears. Until someone has to dig up a basement....😮

I knew a boy when I was in primary school (different school, but were in the same club), in the 80's, whose dad was exposed to a MASSIVE amount of asbestos. I mean huge amount of asbestos exposure over just a year or two, as he was a builder/contractor for local government. He died within 10 years of exposure, he was exposed sometime in the 1970's, usually it's like 40+ years and died of Asbestosis. Then while I was at that school they found asbestos in the disused clocktower, we had 10 weeks worth of "Summer Holiday" (which the parents weren't happy with) instead of the usual 6 and they had to decontaminate and test the entire school. You don't mess with asbestos to any degree, but the whole house and they had multiple renovations over the years. WOAH!!

Both Canadian and US laws should hold these fly-by-night inspectors liable for missing so much. They work for the realtors in most cases and they don’t want to lose a deal. In addition, when code violations are found (per the code of that prior year), the city/county should be notified so that repairs much happen prior to sale.

@@wendwllhickey6426 And have taxes that discourage real-estate as an investment (except for houses that will be used by you and or/your family). A lot of this sloppy cover-up work comes from people buying houses just to make them pretty and sell them for a big payday. This is not the standard of work you would do on your own house. I saw it on a small house near me as well. They bought it, added exterior insulation, applied a very thin white coating, and sold it again a few months months later (probably for a ton more), one year later the coating is already peeling off in multiple places ...

I'm wondering if he had an inspector prepare a report, or had an inspection report prepared; maybe the seller just prepared the report himself.
@robertbrainard5651
@robertbrainard5651 7 месяцев назад
the problem is that contractors aren't all certified and even if they were, if you're using a contractor that's hired by the seller's realtor, bias gonna be applied. Also there are lots of buyers that like this couple that are STUPID. They didn't check foot to ass on this house to see if its good, they looked, saw how beautiful it looked but didn't bother to hire a expensive inspector to see if this house is worth buying, sometimes paying more gets you a more honest inspector.

Homes built between 1850 and 1950 without a remodel, will have plaster/lathe walls. The plaster may have asbestos as the reinforcing fiber in it. Some older homes may have horse hair as the fiber in the plaster. Very old plaster may have asbestos as a natural part of the plaster. So you still have to be very careful. In the 1950 until drywall was invented, used expanded metal as the backing instead of lathe. (the metal will act as a Faraday cage and cause bad radio, TV, cell phone, WIFI reception).

@bluechang08
@bluechang08 8 месяцев назад
Home inspectors should carry liability insurance so when their reports inevitably go bad, the home owner has an outlet for compensation. It will make the home inspector accountable for their report because their liability insurance will skyrocket if not with the quantity of claims made against them, so instead of a quick run through with a pre filled report and the money in the back pocket (and currently no option to go after the inspector), the inspector actually spends a decent amount of time to check and verify everything they can. I also think that potential home owners need to go in with wide open eyes instead of using their heart and falling in love with a property - spend the money and get dedicated electrical, plumbing and heating reports done - anything found will give room for negotiation on cost, or the ability to walk away from a potential death trap as in the long run, the cost of these reports would be less than having to do remedial works after you've signed on the dotted line.

I watch this video series in both amazement and horror. We lived in a house that had hidden the fact that the floor was completely separated from the house. You could see about an inch or 2 outside into daylight. When a person came to repair a electrical problem in another house they had to open up a wall. It was filled to the roof and down to the bottom with fungus and ugly mushrooms. It turned out the entire house was filled with bracket fungus, mushrooms and mold. Never let my inlaws or husband go to rent alone again. Cheap is never a rental bargain. And yes the heating was a total joke.

It kinda sounds better to pull the house down, and build new... But then that would be a bad TV show, so Mike and his crew get the "fun" (nightmare) job of fixing the full house. I suspect the main reason they don't a lot of the time is zoning. Around here, have a lot of homes that are built places they can't rebuild. Too close to roads, etc. So you're stuck fixing a total wreck or moving, since if you tear it down the lot might not meet modern codes, and you're left selling empty, unusable space. That's the big downside with really old homes, at least around here. Also, if you have a mortgage that can be an issue. You can't destroy the value of the existing building so long as the bank owns it, so the bank will let it get fixed but not demolished and rebuilt. There's a ton of issues that make it so you're forced to repair garbage that frankly should be leveled and redone fully. Loads of headaches. @@SeithonJetter

The breaker will trip just FYI. The trip on breakers is internal the outside toggle does not have to move for it to happen.

Asbestos is perfectly fine, and will be no problem, so long as it is not disturbed. If it is, the fibers can become airborne, that is when the health issues can occur. However, it the asbestos insulation is in good shape, and not disturbed, it is fine.

There was asbestos in the plaster, so they were at risk anyway.

The reason everything is broke and needs fixed is the same reason the last person wanted to sell the place. Too many houses these days are a long history of people covering up problems to sell the house they can't afford to fix.t

Asbestos is the most dangerous material ever discovered. My grandfather died from mesothelioma. He was a shipwright by trade, and during WWII he was working for the Pentagon as a civilian contractor lagging the pipework on US naval vessels. Two US military police officers, (in civies no uniforms were ever seen) would knock on the back door, tell him to pack a bag, and he would be gone. No-one knew how long it would be. Mum told us that grandad would be there for dinner, but not brekkie the next morning. Apparently there were a few aussies doing that kind of work, but it was all very hush-hush,,, official secrets act stuff being war time and all... The lagging product he used contained Blue asbestos, supposedly the worst type... He died in 1959. It wasn't until the 80s that we realised just how bad the stuff was. 🙃🐨🇦🇺

My heart breaks for these people, but at least they get a free fix. But oh boy, I bet Mike felt the pain. This has to be the absolute worst house Mike has ever worked on. Not sure what a new build costs in Canada, whatever year this was (at least 10 years ago I'm guessing), but think it might actually have been better to bulldoze and start again. Anyway, I've not watched pt2 yet, but I hope there's a happy ending.

Is there any recourse for the these new home owners in going after the person that sold it home inspectors or even after the people that did the renovations?

There should be some way to censor or fine home inspectors that lie in the new home inspections that were used to determine the sale of the home.

These American Four Square houses are very common in Chicago. If built before asbestos was discovered, the plaster walls likely are fine (and may even include some materials such as horse hair). However, the plaster walls in these houses in the 40s, 50s, etc. likely contain asbestos. This is really just dumb. Don't mess with the wall and you will be fine (like 1000s of Chicago residents are).

He never walked away because he gave them choice to sink over 300K into fixing/building a new home where this one is or condemn it. The owners decided to sink in the cash but given all the issues in first half of video AND knowing the water issues this is not a property/house....its a BOAT...and as everyone who owns a boat knows it stands for Bust Out Another Thousand.

Holmes on Homes had the people pay the remainder of what the contractors were owed and the show paid the rest, even if that ended up being 10x or more the original price. Not sure what Holmes Inspection did.

Actually at the start of video he said even to his own people he was ONLY going to do the bowl fix in the floor and not do a complete gut job and tell the owners rest they had to save and budget for over time. So are you saying he lied? I think he did maybe a bit more than he agreed to but unless there is a disclosure of accounting showing show paid for it all minus any law suit against the former owner, their supplied home inspector then they must have come up with a loan from bank who did not want to see a mortgage go poof so fast in a condemning. In any event looking forward to part 2 to see just how much worse this got before getting better.@@xenadu02

It's a two parter which usually means on their budget they spent twice what they do for a single episode jobs and had to go find a simple issue job for another episode. Probably 100 - 200k of repairs@@xenadu02
