I have watched every video fot over a year and have gone back to some of the older ones also. The lathe build truly sets you apart from the rest of the youtubers.....real engineering thought and creativity. I'm a gear head and have built a few muscle cars. I have never fabricated anything from the ground up. I have seen 4 builds that just blow my mind! Just amazing hands on skills and intelligence happening on this channel.

rather B welding Awesome project!! I built a cb650 buggy and it is a blast. You will love this thing. Beware... THE WHEEL BEARINGS YOU HAVE MUST HAVE AN AN AXLE THROUGH THE CENTER TO HOLD THEM TOGETHER. YOU COULD USE A LARGE DIAMETER BOLT. I WOULD USE A STUB FROM A JUNKJARD AXLE, JUST CUT THE BASKET WITH YOUR ANGLE GRINDER TO REMOVE IT FROM THE REST OF THE AXLE. THE BEARING REQUIRES PRELOAD AS WELL SO IT MUST BE TORQUED TO SPEC. I HAD AN S10 A LONG TIME AGO AND LOST A WHEEL GOING DOWN THE ROAD BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD RUN IT WITHOUT AN AXLE. GOOD LUCK!!!
@EDesigns_FL

No bolt is needed. The hubs are designed for floating axles.
@carlf8224
@carlf8224 5 лет назад
@@EDesigns_FL do you write the same thing to everyone that says it needs a bolt for the preload? You sir are wrong. It does need a bolt or the end of the axle to hold it in. if you need proof you can either read what Dan wrote about his experience or you can come over and i will show you the 8-9 axles and hubs i have in my garage that i have switched out for customers. Please dont type garbage info about thing you have no idea about and learn what a floating axle really is.
@EDesigns_FL
@EDesigns_FL 5 лет назад
@@carlf8224 I posted the same comment twice because I erroneously believed that only a couple people would be so ignorant about how these types of hub assemblies function. I was wrong: their are an astonishing number of you posting the same b.s. while professing to be experts on the subject, and all of you are wrong. When axles are used with this type of hub, there is typically just a pressed in plug to keep oil from leaking out when it's a fixed axle. If there's CV's or U-joints, and nut is used JUST to keep the sub axle in place.There is NO mechanical connection between the axle and the hub. The axle floats in spline groves, unless there are joints, and then the hub suports the axle; NOT the other way around. When the hubs are installed on none driven wheels, nothing other than the mounting bolts/studs is used. It doesn't matter how many of you post ridiculous claims, it does not make them any more accurate.
@EDesigns_FL
@EDesigns_FL 5 лет назад
@@JoelArseneaultRU-vid This style hub assembly is extremely common. When used with solid axles, there's absolutely nothing other than the splines between the hub and the axles. Again, when used on none driven wheels, there is NOTHING in the middle. They are a compete load bearing assembly. I don't have to Google this or make any assumptions, I've replaced enough of, and researched them, to know how they work. Because these are such a great product for an absurdly low price, I use them in industrial applications. They are incredibly well machined, withstand high radial and axle loads, maintenance free, and they're very compact.

If I ever tried to build something like that I’d end up with a garage full of parts and a bunch of holes punched in the sheetrock. I wonder how many people can actually appreciate the skill and precision required to cut multiple parts by hand and weld everything together in a way that leaves a balanced, symmetrical, and durable finished product. This is the guy I’d want in my corner if the shit ever hit the fan. Much respect to you Mr. Mcguyver!!

bud it blows my mind that you are so talented in fabrication and design. im a certified auto technician but ive always wished that i could have learned to weld and fabricate when i started out and the mechanic aspect would have came along afterwards but its awesome to watch your videos and see your ideas come to life in the time lapses and i appreciate you sharing it with us.i believe you are gonna end up wanting to upgrade the engine after this beast is complete.i agree with ya though about not wanting to go too fast but you will definitely want it to shoot rooster tails on the low end and im afraid that 600 is gonna fall short.but hey what do i know? your the mad genius who dreamed this thing up and i cant wait to see it finished bud. thanks again

regarding the engine keep with the plan of the 600. use a spaced copper head gasket to lower the cylinder compression ratio and make a custom turbo manifold with a reasonable size turbo and this will have plenty of power to see of bigger engined buggy easily. if you have any questions about this im more than happy to help. keep up the good work my friend.

Loving the build, but that scrub radius looks dangerous. drawing a line through the ball joints to the ground is the point the wheel will steer around, but the wheel is way further out than that point. this makes the steering a bit iffy. but worst is during braking there is a massive lever that sends a lot of force through the steering. if all is equal and the steering components are strong enough its fine. but if one wheel looses traction while the other has grip it will rip the steering wheel out of your hands because wou are then subjected to a lot of force from the wheel that has grip.

On at least that lower heim on the spindles I'd get a castle nut and drill the bolt to put a cotter pin in. With the bolt like that just turning the wheels will loosen it up over time. The bolt going up from the bottom gravity is working against it and when it falls out it is gonna be a bad day. Personally I'd do it on every bolt holding a heim joint. Early and you might plan on it but I also suggest adding 4 bars between the inner heim mounts bracing the 2 sides together.

From a Safety standpoint, would be best to install BOTH top and bottom bolts on the spindles facing down with nuts on the bottom, that way if nut vibrates loose, spindle still stays on and you dont die........ Also those wheel bearings will separate and come apart without the CV joint and giant nut holding the two sides together (you have a lathe, turn two "Top-Hat" looking collars and put a bolt & Nylock nut thru them to replace the lack of a CV joint)
@bedlamite42

Plenty of power. Even 50hp in a VW based dune buggy is fun.
@Crewsy
@Crewsy 5 лет назад
Your scrub radius is huge with your front suspension design having the heim joints so far away from the tire center line. That will make off-road steering very difficult and will rip the steering wheel out of your hands when you bump into something. Hopefully the rear track width is as wide as the front. The camera angle is making the front look wider.
@TheDestructor888
@TheDestructor888 5 лет назад
Yeah, he might have to bring his top heim joints further in towards the center of the vehicle to angle that scrub right to the center of the tire
@Crewsy
@Crewsy 5 лет назад
TheDestructor888 Yes. It could be done but he will need to move the inner heim joints too, to maintain the suspension geometry through full cycle so the tire stays vertical.

a really good trick i learned with that cheapo pipe bender is to use a die one size down! works very well and can do full 90's ! so don't use the die that the pipe fits into grab the one size smaller and if you want i take the grinder to the top edge's of the die to help the pipe slide in when pressing so it don't cut up the pipe from a sharp edges ! give it a try man

Awesome videos man. Not sure if you’ve been told this yet but NPS is nominal pipe size. Just means what it is classified as. The actual size differs. Same as 2x4 lumber isn’t 2”x4”. There are tons of charts available for the actual sizes and there a good thing to have around when dealing with pipe and tubing.
