Honda Generator Has Gas Mixed In The Oil 

As a rule of thumb, if a crank case is filled up with gas and oil, I drain the mix, fill it again with cheap oil let it run for awhile, then I change the oil again with good oil, now for the Goofy exhaust plumbing pipe, you can drill a drain hole so if any water does get in it should drain out, great job Sir Bruce.

Put another 90° elbow onto the existing one to allow the additional muffler in horizontal position, or to at least keep rain from falling straight down existing elbow.

I may or may not put used oil and old gas on my burn pile to start a fire. When I was a kid, my Dad used to put used oil along the fence in the backyard. I have had several needle and sets, and one Mikuni fuel pump leak gas into crankcase and Hydro lock the engine this year from customers. Happy Halloween🎃!!

Thanks for the video. Those Honda GX engines are, in my opinion, the best small 4-stroke available. I would have turned the starter housing counter-clockwise so the labelling was level! Looked like a lovely Honda HR mower in the background - best mowers ever!

Good thing he brought it to you when he did. Any engine will have a short life expectancy when running on gas diluted oil. I agreed with you not running it to demonstrate it smoking to us. If you had, it might have been a demo of another type. Dr. Pender saves the life of another patient. It lives to have a long productive life! Otherwise, it would have soon been a pile of scrap parts. Maybe extend a threaded elbow onto that welded exhaust elbow, then add the muffler to keep any rain water out. I like those fuel shut off valves in line to the carburetor, I added those to some of my mowers and the new motor in my lawn tractor. As a brand new mower, the needle and seat didn't close off, and that flooded gasoline into the crankcase and combustion chamber. I first check my oil level before using my tractor, and it was plum full and smelled of gas. Then I pull the spark plug and gas poured out like a kitchen facet. I could have blown up that new motor with a turn of the ignition key. To avoiding a fire hazard, I add fuel shutoff valves where possible, there cheap for the problems they prevent, and there like a maintenance valve for carb work and fuel filter changeouts. Thanks Bruce.

Put a 90 degree street elbow on the one that is there and problem solved for the muffler. Thanks, I like those generators.

Lol! Owners a handy guy but couldn't fix this himself hahaha! Just had the same problem this morning. Got that fuel oil mix out and re-filled the oil. Smoked for about 5 minutes afterwards and running perfectly now. Not certain but might have to clean out the needle and seat if this occurs again. Thanks for the video!

Same thing happens with my Honda generator. For storage all I do is shut the fuel off and leave the carb bowl drain screw out. Any fuel that leaks into the carb will just drip out and won't make it's way into the engine. Next time I go to fire her up, I just close the drain screw, turn the fuel on and give her 5-10 pulls before turning the switch to on. That gets the carb bowl filled up.

Shutting the fuel off is number one ! Number two not letting it sit outside when not in use .

I was fun.. common problem with the fuel going into the oil.. no wonder it smoked.. looks as good as a new penny.. hope all is good mate

I have had tillers , do the same thing . It seem any engine that sits a long time between uses does this . What I do to avoid this is to shut the fuel off after using and run carburetor empty .

Bruce, just add a street elbow to the elbow that's already there to put your muffler in the right position.

Good video, Bruce. Great call leaving the muffler pipe as is. Not that it drove you crazy or anything! 😉. I've gotten spoiled by James Condon and Ken's Small Engines (and since bought my own) using a Kill-A-Watt to check the Hz and Voltage output on genrators. So I was left wondering what that Honda was putting out at the end!

2 alternative wasys to deal with that muffler: 1, use a torch to heat the joint between he elbow and the nipple, then turn. 2, ( The better option) add another 1/2 inch (or 3/4) 90° street elbow to make the outlet horizontal.

My Honda EU3000I will do the same thing in the extreme cold weather, putting gas into the oil, smoking, etc..running it in high idle in Temps below 25 degrees does help it. Basically what is happening is it is sucking in moisture into the carb like an airplane could...the carb freezes, causing it to run super rich, putting gas into the oil..putting dry gas into the gas tank does help this in cold weather as well..

Brouce, thank you for your effort, we liked your video very much, i have had the same problem two days ago, and i thought the piston and chamber need to be fixed or change , we wish and pigging you to tell us if the gas stoped to mix with oil, but you need to keeo it running for 5 hours to test it real good. . i will do as you've done and check again. wish you good health.

My snow blower does that, it has a Tecumseh carb, didn't help that the fuel shutoff let fuel seep by either. It's never easy, always something else.

On my EM2200X I run the carb dry. Have a nice Halloween Bruce. Also pull the starter to compression so all the valves are shut and nothing can get into the engine.

How's she goin'? I don't think the muffler would have been a good add. I have seen gear with oil in the crankcase before and they worked perfect. What do you think caused the oil to get in there? I often thought maybe it was a carb leak and somehow the gas drained through the carb and onto the top of the piston and eventually into the crankcase. Anyways, another ncie repair here Bruce!! Would it be a good idea at the end of use to turn off the gas and then let it run till it used all the fuel in the bowl? Especially at end of season when it is expected not to be used for 30 days or more? It would still have gas in it "at the ready" if needed if an emergency (storm, power failure etc.) but the needle & seat would not be getting varnished.

Question…I’ve got the same issue with a generator that belongs to my dad, but it’s building an excessive amount of crankcase pressure, and doing so quickly. Is the excessive CC pressure an effect of the faulty carburetor/float? I haven’t done a compression test, yet, but I’m thinking it’s got worn piston rings.

I guess the moral of the story is to turn off the gas valve for winter storage. I need to go out and do that. Snow on the ground here.

This is a common problem. I replaced the carburetor completely with a brand-new one, because it was all rusted-up anyway. And it still does it! Probably stuck itself open with more crud. Maybe I need to change the filter (again).

It appears someone had the exhaust plumbed for the location the generator where it was installed.

Picked up a honda power washer with a honda gx340 motor a few months ago very cheap. Checked the oil and it came gushing out. I thought it was screwed but changed out and got it fired up and smoked for a little but cleared up.

It happens many times in my generator honda 15000 GPX690 motor Always the same reason , flooding garburator , stuck needle some dirt got inside

Could turn a street elbow into the elbow that is on the exhaust to reposition the muffler to horizontal. I never use the on/off switch on Honda engines unless I am going to restart the engine again in a few minutes. I mostly use the gas shutoff.

I Bet that exhaust elbow is on there so they can run the exhaust out the wall of a garage ...Still not a good design to have rain coming in.That gassy oil is good wood stain

It won't matter what you do to that muffler, the racket those generators make comes from the engine, not so much the muffler.

Put that in your bad gas and also you probably got a float problem that's where it came from and fix the carburetor but yeah they don't want that oil in the oil disposal because it's got gas in it

Tell the owner to turn off the fuel prior to any transportation. Vibration in transport can cause it to consume fuel.

I didn't like the pipe on the muffler turned up like that either.

I turn the muffler down toward the ground, nothing gets in and it's much quieter. The ground cancels out both High and Lows!
