@@metamorphiccustoms Question, what can we use for the seamless body types? I have my Hellboy and worry about 2 things, the rubber cracking at the joints and paint rubbing off.
@metamorphiccustoms
@metamorphiccustoms 2 года назад
@@luismarin3551 Honestly, that is one component I have never treated. (Outside of the Keaton Rubber suit.) The "skin" silicone bodies (including my old HT Alien figures, Dutch, Billy, and even the new Episode 9 Rey) remain in like-new condition without treatment. Even when posed with their arms bent beyond 90 degrees. But I am aware of the issues other collectors are facing. I do not believe any of the products I mentioned in the video would be suitable for the silicone bodies. I have heard of applying thicker greases to the silicone to keep it hydrated, but I also believe the grease never dries. (Its good because it remains on the silicone, but also makes it a bit awkward if you ever need to pick up the figure since you'll get grease on your hands. (Still, it is an option some people choose. I just never tried it myself.)

Great tutorial. I had no idea I needed to do this until about a year ago when I started seeing Hot Toys figures with cracked, flaking accessories posted in various places. I've been extremely lucky with my figures, but I'm going to perform the 303 maintenance ASAP! I purchased a sealed Star Lord recently. I know that the Hot Toys pleather coats are notorious for breaking down badly. I'm almost afraid to open it up. 😬
@metamorphiccustoms
@metamorphiccustoms 3 месяца назад
Hey Thanks for watching and for your comment! Good luck and hopefully you don't see any issues. Starting with the 303 should help! And yes, unboxing an older figure is always nerve-wrecking. Even if the original owner had it displayed in a climate controlled area and took great care, who knows how long it was boxed up before getting to you and what the environment conditions were during shipping. (The older the Pleather, the more sucseptible it is to drastic climate changes.) Still, if the pleater on your particular figure was sealed, this should provide significant protection.

@metamorphiccustoms
@metamorphiccustoms 8 дней назад
Thanks so much for the very kind words and for the up vote! Frequency of application depends on your environment. If it’s really humid and your HVAC (or lack there of) aren’t the best, then I’d say reapply every month. On the other hand, if the humid is constant, either because of the local environment or because of a great HVAC system, then only reapply every 6 - 9 months. I reapply every 3-6 months.

Great tips. I started adding Angelus Too Soft to their clear coat product, Angelus Acrylic Finisher, to increase flexibility of the coating. It doesn’t affect the finish and I can bend, flex the items more extensively without fear of the clear coat cracking. You do have to apply heat as part of the process. I use a hair blow drier that lets me do smaller pieces held with tweezers when needed and doesn’t get hot enough to melt anything. At least I haven’t had anything melt-if you held the item close enough, long enough to the drier I suppose you could have an issue. The Angelus Acrylic Finisher with Too Soft added 1:1 are applied to all accessories made of pleather.

Would that also be the 303 spray? Heard many people were using mod podge/gloss clear coat, but to my understanding that would significantly limit the articulation and make the figure static. Thanks in advance and keep up with the videos - brilliant content!

Thnaks for the kind words and for watching! This is a great question. (I may need to try something on my HT Dog Alien.) Mod Podge glass isnt a terrible idea. It shouldn't make too static, but it may not be as flexible as before. Another option is Angelus Gloss Coat. Because Angelus is designed for textiles, it should retain flexibility.

Yes, that’s exactly what I would do. You can dilute the Mod Podge with a bit of water, or use it straight out of the bottle. Then once it’s completely dry (give it a day or so), hit it with 303. Thanks for watching!

Really good video! Thank you for posting! I have a question: do these figures deteriorate if you have one mint sealed? For example if you have say a batman in storage still in its brown box shipper. Should I open it after all these years and apply a coat of 303 or trust the mint seal will be preserve enough? Thanks.
@metamorphiccustoms
@metamorphiccustoms Год назад
Thanks for watching! So unfortunately, the answer to your question is “yes”, the pleather components can absolutely deteriorate even when sealed in their original packaging. The most important factor is still the environment it’s stored in. That’s why when it comes to HT’s, many buyers refuse to buy still-sealed figures that have pleather components. (They insist the seller first open the figure to fully inspect the pleather to ensure it’s actually “mint”.) There are plenty of cases where buyers have reported opening older figures that were still factory sealed only to find badly flaking pleather. The decision to open sealed HT’s is really up to you. I would open mine to apply the 303, but that’s also because I display mine. (Factory-sealed HT’s have not historically increased in value much more than ones that have been taken out of the package and are still in “like-new” condition. HT’s are truly a special segment in toy collecting.)

You’re very welcome and thanks for watching! The Angelus clear coat is made for textiles, so it dries flexible. (My entire HT ESB Vader suit is coated with Angelus Matte.) Hey Nicholas thanks for watching and welcome to the HT hobby! You can use Angelus on faux leather and real leather. But honestly, I would only use Angelus on the faux leather as added protection. Also for the faux leather, you’ll want to maintain it by applying 303 every few months. (I re-apply 303 every 3 months or so.) You can choose to skip the one-time application of Angelus, but I do recommend maintaining the faux with 303. As for the real leather components, I recommend a leather conditioner. Thanks for watching and for the question! Ok, long answer: The Angelus Black paint is great...but, in my opinion, it's not really for maintanence or damage prevention. Its for modification when series repairs are needed. When the Pleather has only begun to lightly crack, but NOT flake yet, I recommend applying a thin coat of Mod Podge. The Mod Podge is the glue that will hold the pleather together and help to prevent further cracking and potential flaking. (You can also choose to go this route if only minor flaking is visible.) If the pleather is already badly flaking, you can proceed to finish peeling it all off. Then use the Angelus Black paint to coat the fabric surface that was under the pleather. The finished product will look significantly cleaner and better than the previous peeling pleather. But, of course, it will not look like pleather/leather as it once did. It will simply look like black fabric. (This technique is actually pretty common for badly flaking 1/6 scale products.)

What should I use or do to protect it and not have the elbows and arms break or flake? Thanks!! 😊

Thanks for watching and welcome to the Hobby! Yes, there’s been many complaints about rubber/silicone bodies tearing at the joints. To be honest, I’ve never had a rubber or silicone body tear on any of my Hot Toys, but I realize it is definitely a real issue for many. What I can say is do not use 303 on the soft silicone bodies. 303 is for pleather or the stiffer rubbers (like the Keaton Batman suit you see in the video). For softer silicone figures, I have seen some people use “Shin-Etsu” grease. (You can find it on Amazon.) It’s a grease made to prolong the life of silicone components, but I have never used it myself…yet.

Hey thanks for watching! So… unfortunately if the pleather has started to actually peel off, it may be too far gone. However, you can potentially stop further peeling/cracking by applying a light coat of Mod Podge on the pleather. If you do, choose between Mod Podge Matt or gloss. (I recommend Matt, but that’s just my personal taste.) If you apply the Matt version and think its too Matt, you can always apply 303 over it to bring out the shine. (Mod Podge is basically a glue that will hold the pleather together. )

Thanks for watching! Angelus is a product made for leathers (and pleather) textiles. Thus, I wouldn't use it on rubber suits. (I believe the HT Spider-Men are more of a rubber suit?) I have seen cases of the HT Spidey Suits creasing when left posed, but havent seen any flaking. If you can't find 303 in your area, I would look for an alternative to it. 303 is basically a UV protectant for Rubbers, Vinyls, plastics, leather, etc. (Not that you would leave your HT's in the sun, but the 303 helps to keep a level of healty moisture/ hydration in the rubber/pleather.) So the goal is to look for a similiar protectant or even a leather/ pleather conditioner. Automotive-care products are usually a good starting point.

Hi and Thanks for watching! Yes, if the new figures contain pleather parts, you can definitely use 303 on the pleather components. You'll have to wait to have them in-hand to determine if the parts are pleather vs rubber or silicone. But Bucky's jacket is a good example of what is very likely to be pleather. Posing will only effect them if the pleather has already been effected by drastic changes in temp/humidity. Its a great question, and I wish I had a better answer, but I always recommedn 303 because I've personally used it. You can try looking for products which are meant to maintain or increase the life of pleather materials. Perhaps there is a moree readily avalable option in your area that can serve the same purpose as 303.

Thanks for watching! I dont have that figure. If it is like the HT Spidey suits, it may be difficult to prevent the 'sticking'. Also, having a dislay cabinet is important, but it won't solve any humidity issues. Also, Detolfs are not sealed so your figures will get dusty. (I sealed my detolfs with strips of weathering pile. That really helps with the dust.)

@@---ne9ez Allow me to ask: Was the pleather already beginning to show cracks in it? In your first comment you mentioned you knew there were some pleather issues with this figure. (You’re definitely right!) I thought you meant “known issues with the figure” and that maybe you wanted a proactive approach. (Sorry if I misunderstood.) However, if it’s already begun to crack you need to coat it with something that will hold the pleather together. A light coat of Mod Podge will work. On the other hand, if the pleather has already begun to flake off in small chunks, (so more than just a few simple visual cracks) then it’s too late. If it’s flaking off, the only real solution is to finishing peeling off all the pleather bits, and then repaint the area with black fabric paint. (It will never look the same because it won’t look like pleather, but I know that’s what some people have done in the past.) Lastly, applying 303 shouldn’t make it any worse, even if it’s starting to crack. The only time it may seem to get worse is if the pleather was already loose (beyond repair) and gently applying anything at that point removes the loose chunks of pleather. Hope this helps…

It depends on the environment in your display area. If you have a good HVAC system and/or the humidity in your area remains consistent and under 60%, I would say to reapply every 3- 6 months. Conversley, if your display area had no humidity control and humidity is constantly spiking (i.e., Tropic climates with no HVAC) then apply 1 to twice a month. (But in this latter scenario, the 303 will only help so much before the pleathe rbegins to detriorate. The firts goal is to first manage the humidity.)

Ouch! Sorry to hear. Probably beyond repair. Maybe deel off all the flaking pleather and repaint with coat with fabric paint. It defintiely won't look the same, but its better than nothing. (Then again, if its that bad, I'd either just look for a new coat, or consider picking up the new HT version of Bane thats still on PO.) Thanks for watching!

This is a great video. I wish I would've seen it 10 years ago . Please help me with something. How can I repair a crack and even some flaking? Or when a pleather starts to flake it's too late for tears ? I have several that are in pretty bad shape . Also , how can I control humidity in a very humid country or city ? Do you have a demumidifier?

Hi Patrick, Thanks for watching the video! Unfortunately, once the item starts flaking, as in "chunks are starting to come off from the pleather", then its usually too late to fix with the methods I mentioned in the video. 303 and Angelus are more for prevention and maintanence. While Mod Podge can be for prevention and for treating pleather that has just begun to crack but has not yet flaked. Even professional furniture restoration videos usually focus on repairing cracks but not missing chunks (usually). Sometimes what people do with 1/6 scale garments that have begun flaking is to completely peel off all the pleather and just repaint the area with fabric paint. It will never look like pleather, but at least it looks better than flaking pleather. First step to controlling humidity is to find out if you have to control humidity. Start off by getting a cheap hygrometer (the little device that measures relative humidity). The humidity in your display area should be within 35-55% humidity. AND you should not have drastic changes in those levels. In most cases, a standard home HVAC system will control humidity. If it doesn't or you dont have an HVAC system, then you should definitely look into a de-humidifier to keep the humidity levels constant and within the acceptable range.

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I appreciate very much. I live in s very humid and Very hot country. I will buy the hygrometer just as you recommended and check what's my reality. And I believe I will have to buy that dehumidifier sooner than expected. Thank you once again. It's been very insightful 😎🙏
