House of Gucci Was Hard To Watch

Ridley Scott's 2021 film adaptation of "The House of Gucci" by Sara Gay Forden could have been a brilliant re-telling of Maurizio Gucci & Patrizia Reggiani's love, strife, and relationship. But unfortunately, the movie feels it was pulled in far too many directions, with each actor taking their own creative licenses that drain it of any coherence. A star-studded cast included Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, & Salma Hayek all of whom could not save the film, and who in part caused the film's overall downfall due to the need to cater to each major figure. Ridley Scott didn't seem to have the finesse to pull off the nuance this story required, and that is seen through the dialogue, plot, and ad-libs that plague the film that turns it into a shallow, name-dropping, campy but un-campy snooze fest. The notion of fashion stories being told is wonderful and has been done well before, but here the film really doesn't know what it wants to be, and shouldn't have been made, at least not till someone could have masterfully created it.

Let's talk about how stupid it was to make the cast act in English with an Italian accent. It made the characters look like caricatures. The director decided to hire American actors? @@janemelikova4318 Yeah, as a mixed American from a pretty diverse area, Brooklyn in NYC whose lived around a lot of immigrants especially slav immigrants (Brighton beach) I can guess that people in their home country act a lot different most likely in comparison to people living in America, but American portrayals of other cultures feel very caricature-esque. I wish we could just use subtitles and have actual actors from the culture speaking in their native language. It’s jarring and a bit offensive to me. The use of British/posh accents to indicate a foreign culture is annoying, I understand when the actors are British but badly done fake accents are a big pet peeve. Then again I’m trying to immerse myself in other cultures and languages, other people might just want a narrative that’s easier to follow in English.

They just have such a unique and captivating way of communicating that It really takes away from impact of the story by having Americans do it in English. I don't think this is necessarily true. I'm Italian and in my opinion there have been cases of American productions with foreign actors portraying our culture and our way of communicating well. A good example would be "Call me by your name" (although the fact that the director is Italian surely helped). I think the problem arises when the movie and the actors end up portraying a stereotypical version of Italian Americans (whose culture and lifestyle is quite different from Italians'). I haven't watched House of Gucci yet but based on Luke's words this seems to be the problem with this movie.

Lady Gaga (love her) strikes me as too much of an artist to be a craftsman (actor). Actors are supposed to be able to 'mute' who they are or even tap into aspects of who they are to execute a role. Her not being able to set her views aside is understandable, but not her job as an actress... She is too fiercely independent as a creative to adapt to other characters that aren't already part of her, in my opinion... idk if this makes sense

It’s interesting you touched on many of the same things I had issues with while watching the movie. The most frustrating thing is the lack of direction, like what kind of story are you trying to tell? I wanted to see more of the history, more of the rise and fall of the HoG, more of the behind the scenes creative aspects, more of the business. We’d get a scene of someone getting screwed over in a deal with no idea how we got there. They really thought their equation of Gucci + Gaga was a slam dunk and instead we got a dumb, watered down fiction. AND let me just say as a Gaga stan, I’m very disappointed in the lack of research and preparation she did for this role. It’s almost as if being an Italian American woman obsessed with fashion was her only prerequisite for this film.

This movie seemed rushed. I remember seeing pics of them filming in Sept-Oct and now the movie is out. Another video said it looked like they only did 1 draft of editing. This could have been gooood if they took their time but they rushed it. For why? 😭😭😭

Hollywood is so out of touch, particularly Ridley Scott, present drivel and expect the public to be grateful and impressed.

Loved this! Thank you for providing context for the film. I don’t know much about Gucci’s history and didn’t even know there was a murder until the trailer. I’ll still watch it maybe even read the book. I don’t know if you take recommendations but I’d love to know your thoughts on Last Night in Soho.

Finally, a review that focuses on the storyline and not just the accents - thank you!

Thank you for your honesty! I was mortified by the clip played on Fallon that put Jared Leto's bizarre accent on blast. Glad I'm not missing anything. I don't have time to pay to be tortured further by his performance.

Fabulous review. I suspect in some way that LGG had fear of Patrizia. She preformed her idea, clung to her idea, and meeting her in person might have upset those notions. Not even reading source material, again, she was already fixed on her own opinion of P. Lots of raving about her accent, a person who is Italian American? LGGs reasoning was off in many ways, if you don’t want to glorify a murderess, don’t play her in a movie. So much to work with, not used.

Could you name some of the films/shows that you are referring to at the end?

Personally I didnt mind the film. I watched it in cinema opening weekend and i found it rather enjoyable- perhaps because I'm not to critical of films generally. Saying that i still completely agree the pacing and storyline was very strange... my mum who didnt know much about the HoG legacy or brand previously was constantly confused about the constant jumping of story to story. Also as a fashion buff, the clothes were SO underwhelming lol. Also I hated the fact that the trial was completely skipped over. Maybe I retract my initial statement but i didnt mind it, defo could've been better and could've been worse.
